What happens to the 40k setting if instead of leading armies of space marines the primarchs lead the imperial guard?
>>49650227
40k wouldn't suck as much
>>49650227
The Imperial Army and Space Marine legions would stomp their asses.
>>49650227
The great crusade would not have worked. Some of the HH novels touch on the idea and simply put, space is too big and too varied to use normal human troopers.
I have seen many space marine, imperial guard, chaos space marine creation threads around here. But nothing for some good ol' traitor guard. So here we go.

Throwing weapons always suck. It doesn't matter the system. D&D, PF, Shadowrun, Exalted, they always suck. At best they're sometimes okay as backup weapons. Why is this and what can be done to fix it?
They're actually commonly used in broken strategies. Dart throwers were OP in 2e, and in 3rd edition, poison-coated shuriken were terrifying when combined with a method to mitigate the costs of poison.
>>49647882
Mechanically, outside strategies such as >>49647979, dart weapons are better as ranged regular attacks, like throwing axes, or distraction weapons.
Shuriken weren't used as weapons of killing, but as distractions against pursuers. Most of the techniques for throwing them involve turning quickly and chaining movements for grabbing them from hidden pockets and throwing as many as possible to dissuade attackers. Pursuers get cut up, mostly just painfully but possibly badly, and those that take cover have bought you a few seconds of running time, plus taught them to take cover when make quick turning around movements.
In a ranged fight, arrows, heavier thrown weapons, or slings are much more damaging. Of course, shuriken or throwing knives don't do much to armored targets, but the again if you're being chased by an armored person, then you can definitely outrun, outmaneuver, and out-stamina them.
>>49647882
Because in real life they weren't that great unless you have something like a sling or atlatl. At that point, you're basically an archer before decent bows were invented, so if you've got good bows, you've got no real reason to use thrown weapons as real weapons and not gimmicky shit like what >>49648082 says.
The Tau stick out in 40k, not because they're strong or because they have Gundams, but because they're always so damn clean.
Where the rest of the galaxy is falling apart these motherfuckers are clean as a whistle. The Eldar might look clean, but we know their souls are dirtier than a Slaanesh jacuzzi afterparty. The Tau look pristine compared to the rest of the galaxy and it throws me for a loop every time I look at them.
Maybe we just didn't ever get enough John Blanche art for them. I know some is out there, but it's not enough to dirty their collective image.
Even this looks clean, especially compared to Blanche's art of other 40k species.
>>49637176
Apparently Tau have 2+ invulnerable save against Blanche
>>49637221
Do people not like his stuff? I think his art was the first thing that ever drew me into a GW.
Talk all about Warhammer Fantasy. Some people are still SJW-level triggered by End Times, so I'm required to say that you should limit discussion about it since it's seen as the start of AoS even though this hasn't stopped anyone. If anything, please limit the shitposting. If you don't like something (like Endhammer) just ignore it.

What are the regular sizes for a match table? I'm feeling crafty and want to make one for home.
also is there a good place to find battle scenarios? Like the ones in the BrB. Would love to see some community ones.
Lastly: Is the AoS skaven screaming bell any different from the 8th ed one? trying to get the cheaper of the 2, but I dont want to sacrifice the look of the 8th ed one.

A question /tg/: The ork Waaaagh field makes the orcish belief in colors true, meaning that their vehicles painted in red do indeed reach faster top speeds.
But shouldn't that mean that, for example, the Blood Angel's vehicles should also go faster? They are also painted red after all.
The ork field doesn't really discriminate as far as I know. In a Space Wolf novel, a marine driving felt the need for speed while racing some orks, so that means it affects other races too right?
>>49639669
I'm not sure if a marines feeling a need for speed is necessarily the result of orks.
Possibly? It could be the WAAAGH field only works on orks and orkish creations. Or that the orks feel color-logic doesn't work for non-orks because they're a bunch of gitz wot don't worship Gork and Mork.
Incidentally, what would happen if a non-ork worshiped Gork and Mork?
>>49639669
But the Blood Angels' vehicles DO go faster...
>>49639766
In that case, it would kinda explain the "luck" of Ultramarines.
Blue is lucky color after all.
> tfw your Dungeon Master commits suicide
Got the call 3 nights ago from his girlfriend. She had this really weirdly calm voice I haven't heard before and it already worried me. She said Dave (not his real name but the name I'll use) hanged himself in his room and locked the door with a note outside. Feels fucking surreal knowing he drew his last breaths fifteen feet from where we all gamed and shared a good time. He seemed so happy the last time we played, we were about to go into a tower dungeon he'd been building up to for most of the campaign. Dunno what to think anymore. We've all been thinking about where to go next with the campaign now that he's gone. Dunno what we're going to do this Sunday instead.

One of the players I knew died in a car accident recently. Really made me rethink every fight I've had with him. I took a long look at my contact list then, at all those people who haven't shown up for years, sometimes disappearing without a warning, and thought - who knows, how many of those guys died without me knowing?
Which fantasy race do you hate and why?
None. Because I tend to not hate fake things.
Gnomes due to every single player or DM who has ever played as one
I'd say elves, but I have a rooted hatred for warcraft's draenei, even if I know jack shit about them, can't actually focus on why though.
Also canine beastfolks.
D&D 4e General /4eg/
What's your favourite element and why are you a boring radiantfag?
If you are GMing, remember...
1. To strongly consider giving out at least one free "tax feat," like Expertise and pre-errata Melee Training.
2. To use Monster Manual 3/Monster Vault/Monster Vault: Nentir Vale/Dark Sun Creature Catalog math. Avoid or manually update anything with Monster Manual 1 or 2 math.
3. That skill challenges have always been scene-framing devices for the GM, that players should never be overtly told that they are in a skill challenge, and that the Rules Compendium has the most up-to-date skill DCs and skill challenge rules.
If you would like assistance with character optimization, remember to tell us what the what the rest of the players are playing, what books are allowed, your starting level, the highest level you expect to reach, what free feats you receive, if anything is banned, whether or not themes are allowed, your starting equipment, and how much you dislike item-dependent builds.
If you wish to talk about settings, 4e's settings are Points of Light (the planes and the natural world's past empires are heavily detailed in various sourcebooks and magazines), 4e Forgotten Realms, 4e Eberron, 4e Dark Sun, and whatever setting you would like to bring into 4e.

My next few favorite races are Drow, Human, Dwarf, Kalashtar and Warforged.

Shouldn't system pdfs be posted on the front page rather than on a single board? Wouldn't it be better to have systems posted as their own threads, in order to increase both the viewership, and put systems through a better peer Review? Wasn't the front page originally a sort of gauntlet for homebrew systems?
>>49528442
why have 10 threads for games that die in 3 posts when you can have a single thread that dies in 30?
Okay so what's the max level in your game?
Could someone recommend me a system (besides Shadowrun, DnD, and Pathfinder)?
So my issue started off as such: most of my players (I'm the DM) are pretty sick of Pathfinder due to its conflicts with our more RP-heavy gameplay style, and as such we proposed to move to 5e. However, some people of our group vehemently rejects 5e because apparently it's too 'inflexible' and 'not fun'.
So is there a compromise out there?
I'm looking for a system that is flexible without too much reliance on rigid rules, but with enough character creation to shut the autists up.
Fantasycraft, or something freeformey
>>49637062
Fate.
https://fate-srd.com/
>>49637062
Try Dungeon World, and give your autists the "Class Warfare" PDF (disassembles the vanilla classes into a build-your-own-class system).
Savage Worlds might also be worth a look.
The MArines Malevolent, a Chapter of acidic asshats who giggle at the word genocide... ir so we've been led to believe.
Something about this little fluffed chapter has always intrigued me, after all what other loyalist chapter is so blatantly cruel and vicious? Not even the Wolves in their executioner days were like this.
But why? Of course you could argue Grimdark but... it isn't so much grimdark as it is oddly placed. After all, one is not born a callous asshat its something learned.
So, lets do something about it. This chapter is neglected and has been largely relegated to 'Asshole Loyalists who are completely iredeemable' but that seems lame and uncreative to me
Why are they thiss way? Is it a part of chapter cult? A quirk in the Geneseed? The result of some terrible and traumatic event in the past? And, what type of chapter are they? Codex compliant or not? Fleet or planet based? Why do they have out of date armour and weapons?
For those uninformed, here is a summary of canon fluff for the Marines malevolent
>Bombed a refugee camp because Orks were in the perimeter on Armaggedon
>Two companies we have met have been complete assholes, disdaining any sign of weakness including the dead and wounded
>Have a feud with the Salamanders for obvious reasons
>Have outdated gear, using largely Corvus pattern armour and outdated bolters as well
>desperate enough to plunder a derelict Forge ship
>One named character- Captain Vinyar(Lord douche)
>>49613698
First of all I think it should be said that "Marines Malevolent" is a moniker from OUTSIDE the chapter, given by bleeding hearts like the Salamanders and jealous weaklings in the guard.
The true name of the chapter is FAR more praiseworthy.
It is: ...
>>49613698
It should be established now: we're not going to try to redeem these asshats, are we? I think it would be more reasonable to have them start out at, say, Minotaur-level dickishness, and then through a mixture of bad decisions and outside forces be reduced to the piss-armored jackasses they are now.
I say that the WHOLE chapter exclusively draws from the finest specimens of Civilized-world middle schools.
>>49613821
Of course not. Redemption is pointless. Maybe making them more thaan JUST Asshats, give reason to their dickishness
>>49613779
Thunder Marines?
Lightning Warriors?
