Any pointers in running an effective cyberpunk game? What makes a good heist? What "flavor" of cyberpunk do you usually go for? Lots of action and neon, or something with more of a noir feel?

I tend to focus on world building and some sort of conspiracy lurking in the background that unfolds throughout a series of adventures. I straddle the line between big and small picture type stuff by involving the PC's back stories in the large scale plot, and make what I am throwing at them imminently relevant to the PCs. I like to leave combat to a few extremely brutal instances, it is unusual for my players to get in a fight without a PC getting seriously injured.

In my opinion, for a Cyberpunk campaign you want them to feel danger and paranoia. You want them to be forced to chose what they they the lesser evil is. Give them agency, but make sure they realize the immensity of their enemies ( gangs, corps, governments, etc) Also, the available technology should have some sort of tangible social effects that the PC's directly experience.

Also, I'm a big fan of "80s in the future" styled settings myself.

Various crime dramas and noir type settings with the appropriate levels of augmentations and technology.

Yesterday I had no internet, so I was forced to amuse myself with reading PDFs.

I had the PDF of the game Cryptomancer that I had not really given anythought of before.

It's Tolkein-esque fantasy world that was transformed when the dwarves discovered the "shardnet" basically a fantasy internet.

I don't think I'd run the game, but the philosophy it has is great; everything is networks, cryptography is handled realistically but still fun, there's lots of ways for players to be clever, and there's also an oppressive shadow government hunting the players. It legit does cyberpunk better than most cyberpunk systems.

/tg/, have you ever played a game where the BBEG took a romantic interest in one of the PCs or allied NPCs? Did they reciprocate? Was the BBEG insane/a bunny boiler? Did it turn into magical realm territory?

There's nothing wrong with the plot having a villain or being kept simple.

> the BBEG took a romantic interest in one of the...allied NPCs?

I can't imagine anyone except a particularly intrusive Paladin player getting at all invested in this.

As for PCs, no. Never happened. I've run and played in games where the BBEG had some kind of connection with a PC but I've never tried romance. I find that's usually something best avoided. I don't relish the idea pretending to be my buddy's girlfriend.

I'm gonna be running an AtLA-inspired East Asian fantasy game soon. If one of my players gives me a good enough backstory to work in an banished/exiled plot I might find a way to add in some spurned lover or something.

It's a dwarf-equivalent in some Japanese fantasy game series IIRC. The species is supposed to be vaguely bovine, in practice they:
>have horns
>age quickly
>have ridiculous sexual dimorphism: females are all massively exaggerated shortstacks, males are huge buff muscleguys

How does /tg/ feel about kitchen sink settings?

Settings with elements of everything; super science fiction technology, alternate worlds, many races, magic, monsters, etc?
14 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>51619050
Well, Paizo stays in business somehow, so apparently people buy into it...
>>
I play Dungeons the Dragoning.

To expand on the point, they're incredibly fun when done right. The important thing is to do the work necessary to keep them relatively consistent. DtD is a bizarre clusterfuck of references and anachronisms, but the genius of the setting is working everything together into a way that is coherent. Taking various different elements and plugging them together in ways that make sense and make the setting more than the sum of its parts.
>>
>>51619050

Alternate worlds aren't strictly a science-fiction thing, it's a very old fantasy/mythology conceit as well.

Alternate timelines now, that's more science-fictiony.

What's your favourite portrayal and handling of magic and magic users?

I don't really care for appearance, but mages always wearing robes is boring. There are numerous light and comfortable clothes to easily cast in.
But I like the magic implemented in very complex way. I'm okay with reality bending as long as it requres you to perform a great ritual. Wanna cast wish? Make a road from the daimonds up to a mountain top, butcher 66 virgin sea elves on the summit and boil their blood in onyx gigantic cauldron.

I actually like Destiny because while it doesn't have specific spells for every situation as I imagine this is the type of magic most people refer to my big draw is that the actual "wizards" of the setting actually act like scholars who go in search of knowledge and it swings both ways between being religious and scholarly.

Two big examples are Osiris who basically started his own cult and possibly found a way to become a time traveling god being and Toland the Shattered who's fascination with the Darkness and the way it works let him to get a booty call with the Hive so now he's swimming around in the afterlife exploring the Darkness

I kinda like how Aes Sedai in Wheel of time worked, magic cracks addicts with over-inflated superiority complexes caused by living holed up in a tower of autism and being cut off from actual social and mental development

Have you ever seriously played a foreigner in a game set in the real world? By foreigner I mean someone from a place or culture that is distinctly different from your own, neighbours or those who are constantly on TV don't really count. How difficult it was for you to play the character without resorting to stereotypes?

The next game I'm gonna play is gonna be set in "Africa" (no specific country mentioned) during the 70s. The DM allows us any nationality as long as it's african. Since I'm not very interested in most of modern Africa but I've read some about Aksum, I thought that playing an Ethiopian could be pretty cool. Problem is that I know almost nothing about modern Ethiopia. Does someone in /tg/ have the knowledge to give some advice? How religious is the people and what are some important differences between western and ethiopian christianity? Are Kaleb or Tafari normal and acceptable names for a character or is it like calling yourself Charlemagne?

And since this is not my blog, let's use this thread so everyone can ask for tips on how to play a character of any nationality or ethnicity he wants to play.

Twin Plasma or Twin Fusion are the most common configurations. If you are in doubt, magnetize them.

Generally is preferable to sacrifice flexibility for firepower, so don't mix guns except in some cases.
