Jade Empire Ninjas edition
It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Galaxy has been beset by strife and torn by war. The Emperor, who had once dreamed of uniting the Galaxy under His banner, is long dead. Half of the Primarchs, his demigod sons turned against him, and in a climactic battle on Terra the Emperor was cast down. With his death, Terra was consumed by a Warpstorm and half the Imperium fell forever under the shadow of Chaos.

Does anyone have any advice on how to run a session(s) where players are tracking down a target?

Specifically my players are trying to track down some frost giants that had fled from an attack on Bryn Shander the day before. Like I'm not sure how to mechanically work it so it's interesting.

I get the impression that the players should encounter evidence that the giants had passed by an area, but I don't know how how to make it non-linear. In my mind, I'm thinking it would play out something like "the players encounter the camp of the giants, then they find some carcasses where the giants ate lunch, then they find a caravan which had been demolished, then they find the giants." But that seems way too linear and predetermined.

Is it possible to make Bane a lawful good god without changing its character too much?

This is fucking retarded OP. What would you even stand to gain from doing this?
>>
Portfolio: Strife, hatred, tyranny, fear
Domains: Evil, Destruction, Hatred, Law, Tyranny
Dogma: Serve no one but Bane. Fear him always and make others fear him even more than you do. The Black Hand always strikes down those who stand against it in the end. Defy Bane and die - or in death find loyalty to him, for he shall compel it. Submit to the word of Bane as uttered by his ranking clergy, since true power can only be gained through service to him. Spread the dark fear of Bane. It is the doom of those who do not follow him to let power slip through their hands Those who cross the Black Hand meet their dooms earlier and more harshly than those who worship other deities.

>Even as a human, Bane wanted nothing more than to become the most feared, respected tyrant the wolrd had ever known.

>Bane hates virtually the entire Faerunian pantheon but holds special antipathy for Torm, Cyric, Mystra, Tempus, Helm, Lathander, Oghma, and Ilmater, in that order. He has established a working relationship with Loviatar, Mask, and Talona, but as these deities desperately fear him, the alliances are not strong.

The D&D model separates casters into two categories: those who can cast spontaneously from a list of known spells, and those who have to spend an hour preparing spells every day. The latter is utterly stupid and WotC would do well to get rid of it altogether.

First of all, the fact that it requires an hour of in-game time to prepare bogs the entire party down. Best case scenario: the DM handwaves it away ("Oh yeah, you totally spent an hour preparing that. Now, let's get started with the real adventuring day"), worst case scenario the DM is a dick and uses this opportunity for ambushes, or to have you slowed down in your time-critical quest.

Secondly, it slows down the actual gameplay because the player needs to pick and choose what spells he prepares depending on what he expects is neccessary for his party. Best case scenario he has a "standard" spell list he uses (which makes the whole prepared casting mechanic useless because he's just using the same spells over and over), worst case scenario he spends half of the session autistically wondering whether or not this one esoteric spell is worth burning a spell slot on.

The solution is incredibly simple and already present in the system: just make all casters spontaneous. It speeds up gameplay, removes the "one hour preparation" stupidity and allows players to use spells from their list as the need arises rather than relying on arbitrary 'preparation'. In short I'm saying to remove wizards and rebrand sorcerers as wizards (same with cleric-favored soul and druid-spirit shaman), except without CHA as the primary casting stat (that's what bards are for).

The only objection to this model is the arbitrary idea that wizards must be "bookish", but that's what the knowledge skills are for.

Personally I'd roll with something rules-light, like D&D Basic, which would allow me to basically add anything I need and take anything I don't need away so that I wouldn't have much of an issue with overcomplication. If you prefer crunch though, I guess you could go with shadowrun reskinned or something.

I hear Savage Worlds is good for such things too, but I haven't played it before.

Are there DM's on /tg/ that can train me?

I think that one of the hardest things for me to do is to come at my players with details like a wild man with a baseball bat. Just smack em with "stuff" and specific details. I see a lot of DM's who can just eschew room details and shit like it's coming out of their ass. How do I get good at this?

Depends on the setting.

If it's something like Dying Earth where it's based on memorization, I'd think so. Or if it's like in 5e where it's simply a matter of having the know-how and being able to provide the spell's components.

If it's based on having a soul, then it gets really subjective. At that point, whether or not a robot can learn magic becomes a major defining feature of the setting.

But then again, Robo probably has a soul, and it can't use magic. But I think there it's based on "life-force" or something.

How can I possibly take this game seriously? It's just emo-trope after emo-trope. It reads like a parody of shitty high school fanfiction. Share with me your setting's religions.
Currently working on the theology of my setting, though I'm not too sure what I want to do with it, other than having a fairly generically good 'smite evil, protect the weak, deus vult' style religion, though I might even revoke that for the sake of nuance.
Pic related is a WIP icon for the religion, referring to the three duties - protect the innocent (tower shield), fight evil (sword), light the True Path (sun). Unashamedly the outline of three images from a quick search.

Far too fiddly and complex for a single symbol. The main symbols aren't something a committee works out, it's what people use, and most likely somethign more directly related to the mythology or teachings than a laundry list of virtues. Christianity has the cross, Judaism the star, Buddhism often gets symbolised with the wheel. You want the [thing], not a bunch of things, and the easier that thing can be drawn or scribbled onto something, the better.
>>

Fair enough, already using just the sun for mapmaking to be a church. Problem basically just comes to how early on I am in the process, I don't have a really solid idea yet, especially with this seeming particularly monotheistic and I'd like to have a few gods rather than just the one.
>>
While belief in the existence of spirits is pretty widely held, the specific mechanics of it are fairly diverse.

The winter folk hold the belief that only people have spirits, and moreover that the spirits of ones ancestors hold much more sway over your life. This leads to a very large focus on lineage in their culture. They are also the progenators of the belief that the closer one is to death, the easier it is for them to receive wisdom from their ancestors, which leads to a couple cultural quirks. It explains why they are almost always led by the eldest among them, at any given moment they are likely closest to death. It also gives rise to a type of priest known as an oracle. These are people who willingly undergo intense torture to be brought within inches of their death, only to be brought back (hopefully with some wisdom from the otherside) many medical advancements in the setting can be attributed to this specific practice. In more modern practices the question becomes less about how close to death one can get and more about how long one can stay dead and mqke it back. Oracles are highly respected, but it isnt considered a profession.

Giving genie wishes to the PCs is never a good idea OP.
>>
>>51576946
I mean, traditionally, they were just powerful beings who operated on common sense conventions. If you tried to get around things like that, they would probably call you insolent and turn you into a dog or something.
>>
>>51576883
A genie is a powerful elemental being bound by magic to a container (Lamp, pot, jug, whatever). They are proud creatures that loathe being controlled or bound, and they'll help people who free them, out of gratitude. But again, they are proud as FUCK, and if you treat one as a servant or try to rules lawyer its gratitude, it can and will go out of its way to fuck with you and make your life hell. If you get a Genie, be reasonable, be straightforward, and be respectful, and maybe it'll grant your wildest dreams. Or you could fuck up and end up a crippled, deformed beggar in the court of genies.

What are the most important things for running an Operator Game? My players are clamouring for it but the pre-campaign talk that we had wasn't exactly helpful. We agreed that the campaign would be best done as a Mission-by-mission ordeal with a looser narrative tying it all together. We're going to be using Dark Heresy 2nd edition for our ruleset, though that's not too big a factor as I'm after more general tips, not necessarily setting-specific stuff.

So far what I've locked down on is:
>Combat focus
The missions will each be a set-piece with an emphasis on combat, breaching and clearing room by room. There'll be infrequent Stealth/Espionage oriented missions too, stealing data or assassinations and such.
>Detailed maps
We play on Roll20 and with dynamic lighting and such, I'll be able to artistically craft maps with tactical opportunities and the like. The players would be able to check these maps out (albeit with less detail) prior to each mission so that they can craft plans and such.
>Callsigns, gadgetry
This is where I break down a bit, are daft Callsigns a key part of Operating Operationally? Gadgets the players can sort out for themselves by acquiring them prior to each mission, I'm expecting neat use of sound-muting Stummers, radio hacking Vox-thieves and the like to listen in on enemy communications.

What else can you guys suggest? That looks like it's enough to me but I'm sure I've missed something out.

>>
I've played a couple of OPERATOR games, a mix of ground combat and planes&mercs. I've never considered callsigns to be that important - half the time, you'll all be referring to each other by your real names anyway.

As a matter of fact, my group's most recent DH game took a turn for the OPERATOR when the GM developed a fondness for having cunts in fortified positions lob grenades at us.
>>
>>51576745
Read up to the point where you're the most educated individual in the group regarding operators operating.

Otherwise, this is just going to be a circle-jerk of people correcting each other with "that's not what a real operator would do."
>>
>>51576812

In addition to this, you can brush off any attempted correction by saying "Well maybe that's how they do it today, but in the Imperium it's different".

Yes, it's a bit of a cop-out. It's also a totally valid point.
