Can we get a thread for DM gaffes? Times when a simple mistake or misread rule led to funny or disastrous results.

Don't you deal out smite damage to players who meta game? I usually give Xd4 radiant damage per-metagame with X being equal to player level. Usually curbs the metabullshit within 2 encounters.

I'm sketching out paladin subclass mechanics. Right now we have a pretty obvious theme that I'm interested in developing challengers for, paladins that do more with Lay on Hands, Find Steed, and Divine Sense instead of sticking to the aura/smite/abjuration focus.

Replacing the 7th level aura (and taking into account the need for a scaling health bonus, probably just twice paladin level) what's a good ballpark CR to use for steed upgrades, 2 or 3? I'm likely to build steeds from scratch rather than shovel random MM picks into place, but a basis for comparison is good.

I looked at the revised Ranger but those are just a pile of bonuses and attacks, and while I'd like the steed to be functional as a combatant I'm not interested in challenging that niche.

What I'm posting right here is taken from a blog -chaudroncromatique-, but I really liked it and I wanted to share it with /tg/ and maybe anyone has something to add to it.

Let's say you have a character who can come back from the dead pic related style, someone who dies so many times and so often it's not even funny. But always revives next week on the same day. For example if he died on a Tuesday morning, he'll be back next week on a Tuesday morning.

Now let's say that character got gud and stopped dying because he finally became the equivalent of the Black Mamba from Kill Bill. What are some advantages he could have in combat and how do you balance him if the party are a group of normal humans?

Honesty just leave it at that.

He can't be killed by external forces.

He ages at the same rate so he's going to die "naturally" at some point in 60 or 70 years.

Beyond that for all game related activities a 7 day respawn counter isn't a game breaker so long as the antagonist keeps working at a steady pace.

Let them, if they actually put thought into it other than "inject with venom" maybe have it give them some benefit. Might not be the final answer but a tool that can help keep themselves alive and give them an edge.

Perhaps throw them some more clues about the villain that will prove to them it won't work? Or at worst, I think just telling them "this won't work" out of game isn't unacceptable in such situation. Or hell, why not simply make it work? Sounds like quite a creative way to beat the guy.

Recently me and my friends have picked up the Mutants & Masterminds 3rd Edition rulebook and the game sounds amazing in concept with literally no limit on what you can build. I'm just struggling to wrap my head around the simple stuff; making attacks, what's allowed within PL, ect.

It mainly stems from my understanding of 'Attack & Effect' in the rules it states that 'The total of your hero’s attack bonus and effect rank with that attack cannot exceed twice the series power level. If an effect allows a resistance check, but does not require an attack check, its effect rank cannot exceed the series power level.' So if for example the PL for the series was 5, my total hit & damage/effect couldn't equal more than 10 if I'm correct? My question is how do I calculate my hit roll and damage effect? Say I just wanted to hit someone with a punch could I roll just pure strength vs. their dodge? Or do I need to have Close Combat ranks in skills to do this? If that's the case then say I want to be an Avatar inspired Fire Bender and I take the Damage power can I just use my Damage Power for both 'Hit' & 'Effect' or would I need to take ranks in Ranged Combat?

Also an 'Effect' in the glossary counts as 'An aspect of an a power with a defined game effect' which seems a little vague? Does this literally include anything a power could do? Extending Limbs? Creating constructs? Running super speed?

I'm really looking forward to playing this game but I'm struggling to get the basics, I feel this is one of those system where once you really get into it that it's amazing but the rules have to vague since you can literally do anything.

It's a pretty decent system. Maybe not as great as you think. But, for a quick run-down.

Your attack bonus is based in part on an attribute (Fighting for melee, Dexterity (or is it Agility?) for ranged. Then you add in any stuff like Close or Ranged Combat ranks, or the Close or Ranged Attack skill. Powers can also add to attack bonus if you use the Accurate modifier (+2 to checks with that power). So, attack bonus is built from many things.

Effect ranks are well...effect ranks and nothing else. And yes, pretty much anything which has rules for it is a power effect. You want to be stretchy? That's an effect. Shoot lasers? effect, etc. M&M works as an effect-based system, so you make a power not based on the subtle fluffy details, but only on what it does in-game. A guy with a rocket launcher versus someone who shoots bolts of telekinetic force are both using a ranged damage effect, but with different descriptors, fluff, and probably extras.

Hello /tg/, after years of lurking I'm going to bite the bullet and purchase the Skitarii 'Start Collecting' box and start really getting into 40K.

Only a minor issue. I'm hugely into the idea of 'Your Dudes' and being as new as I am I'm unsure how much of that I can actually do with Skitarii and Admech without fucking up the lore.

Do I make up a unique forgeworld and color scheme? Do I name specific units? Can Skitarii even HAVE personality? Plenty of these feel like obvious questions but I would very much appreciate the help here /tg/.

As for Skitarii having personality -- yes, but by necessity they're pretty dogmatic and zealous with regards to the strictures of the machine cult. Their commanding techpriests, however, can override their emotional impulses through the noospheric link through which they also receive their orders.

Depends on what you mean. Any given forgbworld's management, resources, and situation likely heavily shape the way it approaches war, it's capabilities, and it's preferred tactics, including the way it equips and modifies it's soldiers.

The battlefields your dudes tend to be deployed to, the methods they employ, the sorts of equipment your forgbworld has access too. Is it a new forgbworld? An old one? What are the ranking Magos's like? Does the force world specialise? How orthodox are they viz a viz Omnisian Cult? Do they work a lot with Space Marines, or Rogue Traders? Do they have a long history of fighting tech-heresy, or do they have a reputation for skirting the edge of acceptability? Do they quickly adapt their equipment to their enemy, or are they ponderous and industrial in their approach to warfare? Do they have any specific treaties with local planets? Do they harbour grudges against any local Xeno factions? Do your tech priests strongly venerate any specific sort of technology or school of thought?

All good answers in this thread. Some Skitarii squad leaders maintain a small portion of self initiative, and when they use it in the field, it didn't loose the mission.
Generally though, Skitarii are meant to be faceless, replaceable, and numerous. The vehicles are what you want to your dudes with. If you bring in an enginseer, his servitors could be his personally crafted ones, as well.

Is Shadowrun good? Not bait or troll, I only know 5e (pretty well) and d20 based CRPGs but I love the aesthetic and I want to learn and play something sci-f flavored.

What are the alternatives for sci-fi? Aware of Dark Heresy which I like the fluff of but every story just seems like CRAZY WHACKY PSYKER SHIT. Like people are getting possessed every other session.

What kind of Sci-Fi do you want? Because Shadowrun is only what you should go to if you want it's specific idea of "magic returns to a cyberpunk future". It's kind of a mess of a system, and the books are poorly edited and the company that publishes it is notoriously shit.
