Magic: The Gathering Modern General (Competitive Discussion)
This thread is for the competitive discussion of the modern format. Kitchen table discussion is not welcome, but they don't read OPs anyway. For reference the average deck will run you anywhere from $400-$2000.

>Metagame thoughts
Its great Moderns very diverse right now. Theres a lot of solid combo decks to play, UW Control is finally getting its time to shine, and the usual suspects sans classic Jund are all putting up the results they usually do. Burn is solid too right now. A lot of people said it would see a downswing because DSJ was strangely a bad matchup but I find that its fine if you play the deck well. DSJ is also a difficult deck to pilot so part of it may just be misplays from them that benefit me.
>Bans/Unbans
No bans, no unbans
You just found a genie lamp. You have been given three wishes, and amazingly the genie isn't a jerk.
Meta wishes like wishing for more wishes or more genies fizzle out.
What do you wish for?
have you or your players ever spent a wish smartly or stupidly, tell us about it.
I wish for a Deck of Many Things.
>>53289165
I'd wish for infinite mental storage capacity, then the ability to remember everything I perceive perfectly. My third wish would be for a book that will answer any question I ask it verbally by filling its pages with a detailed answer. It can only do this three times a day, however, so I don't just ask it everything in one sitting and lose any interest in life.
>have you or your players ever spent a wish smartly or stupidly, tell us about it.
Haven't had the chance to cast wish in any tabletops, but one time in an MTG cube game I got a golden wish and cast it to bring a rod of ruin into the game. We had a laugh and then I got my ass handed to me over the next couple rounds.
>>53289165
>have you or your players ever spent a wish smartly or stupidly
We once rescued a fairy who granted us no less than TEN wishes total. It sounded pretty outlandish until she explained the catch: she can't go on to alter reality around us or anything, because it wasn't her "season", but she could alter us as individuals or grant us items.
The other catch only came apparent when we made our first wish: she wasn't a dick or anything, in fact she was incredibly helpful and always tried her best to give us what we wanted, it was just that she was a colossal fuck-up. For instance, the kobold sorcerer who asked for dragon wings got them literally, far too huge for her to even get off the ground with them or much move at all. The human gunslinger asked to be tougher and got turned into a dwarf.
We spent more wishes undoing our previous ones than wishing for anything else. But we did get some guidebooks and a really fancy minor magical trinket out of it.
I refuse to use that stupid name edition:

Will No Escape make Wyches great again?
>>53289024
All it seems to do is make them somewhat better as a tarpit.
I was kind of hoping they would get more ways to dodge things now that to-hit penalties are a thing. Would have been neat if they just gave everyone within 12" -2 to hit them, whether with shooting or melee, as they just weave through everything.
>>53289024
Drukhari.
No, there's no stat bonuses to roll off so it's not reliable even though you win the tie.
I don't play DE, but nothing is really making me jizz my pants or making me absolutely terrified of them.

>Guards quickly put sword to his throat and go into the prison cell
>Party puts sword to nobleman's throat
>Nobody knows what's going on
And that's how rolling on a fumble chart created a mexican standoff
I'm no fan of fumbles (or crits for that matter) but that was pretty sweet.

What I'm saying is, defenders AC should be higher than strikers and controllers, which its not. I think maybe they should have let defenders take a minor dex bonus to ac (+1 for scale, +2 for chain) and kept AC bonus for armor expertise with scale. Single weapon fighter ought to get a +1 to ac as well to attack, and sheilds ought to carry a scaled bonus, like +1 per teir for shield mastery.
>>53284604
Armors scale with masterwork armors.
A Fighter in scale+heavy shield will have 19 AC at level 1. How's a wizard matching that?
Also, mathematically, scaling off of two sources instead of 1 (shield and armor/stat, instead of just armor) will mean that shield will outscale attack bonuses. Which is bad. You want to keep AC and offense in the same ballpark.
>>53284604
The defender is a shaky role in general, and not just because of the fact that some strikers can have defender-like AC even without abusing Battle Cleric's Lore.
I fully believe that defenders having few methods of shoring up their NADs (beyond a heavy shield for +2 Reflex) was a horrid design decision.
It gives them a major achilles heel for no good reason.
There is nothing worse than laying down, say, a Combat Challenge or a divine sanction on a monster, only to discover that that monster enjoys targeting non-AC defenses. There are many, many monsters that do such a thing, even at low heroic.
Let's heave a character art thread. I'll start off with some pirates.
If anyone has pictures of generic ship crewman or peasants without obvious farming accoutrements then I would be very thankful!

got a link? Never heard of it.
So I'm reading through the rules of Dragon Rampant, and I'm a little confused about strength points.
Are they pretty much just HP for a unit? I get that you divide SP with the number of models in a unit to get the essential wounds per model, but what are the benefits of having 12 models in a unit vs only 4 if the SP are the same?

DO NOT BUY ANY BOOKS
8th edition is coming really really soon (rumors say next month) and it will invalidate ALL current books and codeces.
It's also going to be awesome. GW has been giving us tidbits and previews of coming rules changes and they are mostly really good. So look forward to that.
ITT we take the best parts of famous /tg/ characters to build a new /tg/ character.
And to avoid a shitstorm, this character will focus on the fantasy portion of /tg/ characters and will be a cis male. Sorry trap-enthusiasts.
>>53313777

A man that dresses like a woman but calls itself a man is still a man.
>>53313777

But that depends on the "man", man. But you know what I mean. Nothing /d/lite unless there's a knowledgeable /tg/ character that is that way. I don't really care what orientation he is or whatever, as long as its a /tg/ inspired man.
