Explain
So, which one is it (it doesn't need to be on the list)?
>>8205903
ubuntu and os x, if you have to ask.
although it's a rather silly question. largely, everybody just uses whatever the fuck they prefer - ubuntu, debian, fedora, arch, windows, os x. nobody uses these shitty mobile ones though, iOS, android, Chrome.

What's the difference between vacuum energy and dark energy?
Is it that vacuum energy is equivalent to zero point energy as measured by the Casimir effect, Lamb shift and spontaneous decay?
And that dark energy is a hypothesised form of energy made up of zero point energy and scalar fields, such as the Higgs field, that permeates all of space and which would therefore explain the accelerating expansion of the universe?
So one is an experimentally verified phenomenon, while the other is an unverified hypothesis that intends to explain an observed phenomenon?
>>8205578
The difference is that dark energy is 10^115 times as powerful as the expected effect of vacuum energy.
>>8205578
>What's the difference between vacuum energy and dark energy?
one is real, the other is not
>>8205582
Right ok, so the accelerating expansion of the universe would require that much energy.
So we're left with a massive amount of mystical invisible energy?
>>8205586
That sounds a lot like:
>So one is an experimentally verified phenomenon, while the other is an unverified hypothesis that intends to explain an observed phenomenon
So, ok cool.
Hey /sci/, businessman here,
What are some things that you guys wish you had along your college years or for your studies? I'm considering creating a business appealing to STEM students, as I always enjoyed science, and would like to help others who enjoy it.

nothing
of course I speak only for myself and not every other STEMfag
but if I was a businessman and would cater to STEMfags I would offer cheap beer, coffee and energy drinks because almost everyone here seems to chug that shit all day long
too bad for you though. we have our own brewery and get 1 free coffee and 1 free beer a day. I never used it though because I never drink any of that shit. the only shit I drink is tap water and sometimes milk and green tea

Is this book the best book for beginner higher level mathematics?
>>8205282
It's the best book for an adult wanting to (re?)learn school math
not OP, but i saw the thread where this book was recommended.
What subject covers pic related? And what path from high school maths will have me understand this notation and statments?

Bump for interest.
14 days till exam
30 pages have to be 100% present
It takes 5min to learn the content of one page
How many hours do you need per day?
time_needed=time_learn*pages/days
time_needed=5min*30/14=11min
But you forget that stuff exponentially!
>pic related
If you would assume the repetitions were at
10min,1hour,1day,3days,7days
How would my formula than look? At day -14 you learn 2 pages and than 10min later again those same pages.
At day -13 you learn 2 new pages, repeat them and the 2 pages from the day before -14
I don't really know how to calculate that.
Can someone please help me? I want to have a plot everyday which calculates the time i would need to spend each day if I would start learnjng for the exams right now.
That way I would see the amount I have to learn increase rapidly when the exams approach and hopefully pick the right time to start

Hey mathfags you are needed here
Anki?
Let's have a thread about simple math problems.
I am pretty bad at math and have barely more than high school education. But recently I sat at the toilet and wondered, what is 1+4+9+...+x^2? Then I took a piece of paper and solved it, googled and discovered that my formula is correct. It was quite fun doing it. Some of you may laugh at the simplicity, but as I said, I am pretty bad at math.
Anyway, got more simple math problems for me? It's kinda fun.
If you want simple math problems like that, especially ones at your level of education, consider conics.
Maybe we can get some more simple math problems if we just extend your problem!
like, if "t" is some number, what is
[math] 1^t + 2^t + 3^t + ... + x^t [/math]
?
Or we may take t to be a negative number. For example, let's flip the sign in your example. What number is
[math] 1^{-2} + 2^{-2} + 3^{-2} + ... + x^{-2} [/math]
In this case, we can even let x be arbitrary high, we can even sum all numbers!
What is
[math] 1^{-2} + 2^{-2} + 3^{-2} + ... [/math]
Or what is
[math] 1^{-s} + 2^{-s} + 3^{-s} + ... [/math]
for any number? Or even any complex number. What kind of function is that? Where are it's zero values located?

As the title says what can I do to become more rational but also creative? The only things that I think may help me are philosophy(not baiting) and math.
Start working into organic chemistry and molecular synthesis.
>>8204751
Care to elaborate or youre just making fun of them?
>>8204751
Kek.
OP, I'm not sure how to help you. For me it is curiosity that drives me to be both rational and creative. I am constantly refining and expanding my worldview, and given that I can't often have conversations about it with my friends, I am driven to express it in writing, painting, drawing, music, and eventually maths.
I suppose the best thing I can recommend is to read a lot of textbooks, philosophy, and literature.
Once you've read a fair bit, I'd recommend a trip on LSD or 1p-LSD to give you a new perspective on your knowledge. Shrooms are good too.
Just remember during your trip to be credulous of your thoughts. In fact, this is important most of the time.
Why do physicists claim the big bang ball was the size of a marble? How did they calculate that?
It could have been the size of a boulder, a star or a fucking galaxy.
Why do mathematicians claim 1+1 is 2? How did they calculate that?
It could be 3, 4 or fucking 2145921.
who claims it was the size of a marble?
as I understand it, the big bang wasn't a sudden expansion of matter in space, it was an expension of space itself, so the universe was always the same "size", because you can't measure something outside of space.
Am I wrong?
>>8204716
but how do they know if it started as a marble, a grain of salt, an atom, smaller or even bigger

Not sure if this is the right word, but is there a proper word describing an operation on a set that never gives back an element from the set?
i.e. you have some magma (N, *)
for any x, y in P
x * y is not in P (but is in N)
(not necessarily a binary operation)
e.g.
the primes under multiplication
characters under concatenation
forgot to say
*P is a subset of N
>>8204022
I don't think there is a word for it. Anti-closure sounds good.
As a side effect, if the operation has an identity then said identity cannot be contained in P in order for it to have this property.
