How do I reduce surface friction? Which surface would have less friction A or B? I want to reduce friction between two surfaces so I can pull an object across as easily as possible.

Depends. Are we talking about molecular levels of smoothness, or only macroscopic?
>>
>>8200526
>macroscopic
yes

It is on the tongues surface. I am looking to reduce friction on the tongue for a project
>>
depends on the other surface. If you had two Bs zig to zag, thats a lot, even more that A to A if the zipper pattern is extreme enough. Assuming our domain of discorse is the two named sides in OPs pic, A to B / B to A would result in the least friction

But the real question is why is it important to also state the 'B to A' in addition to 'A to B' :^)

Will we be a space fairing species by the time I die? Realistically, will I ever get to space? (I'm 19 y/o) Also, how will we do it? What breakthroughs do we have/need to make it possible?

Technically we've been space fairing far before you were even wrong.

There are no technological breakthroughs that we need. The breakthrough we need is for people to understand how big of a deal it is and hand over their fucking money. It has always been about the money. We could have gone over thirty years ago if the money was there.

Most people are pieces of shit and don't care about anything. Giving a fuck about future generations is like blasphemy.

That's the really shitty thing. We just need the ball rolling, one fucking group of people to go there, and that'd be it. We'd be going every fucking two years like it was no big deal.

We've had the window to go to Mars for like forty years, and that window will end. The fact that it's taking this long is a testament to how moronic most people are. NASA lost funding because no other country was going to Mars, "so why waste our fucking money?" - politicians with the control

I'll go to Mars. Fuck these people.

Why do we like landscapes? Also, do animals like landscapes as we do?
21 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
I never understood why people like landscapes. I don't particularly enjoy them, I wouldn't go on a trek to see them, I don't take photos of them when I see them, nor do I think they're particularly beautiful or worth remembering.
>>
>>8199945
I guess its good to be able to see a threat already from far away. Gives a secure feeling. And control is beautiful. And i bet an albatross or a condor loves the view.

So I'm trying to think of an idea to build a guitar tuner which doesn't go by sound. This isn't pragmatic, sound is a much easier way, but I like the idea of a guitar tuning itself without the need to be near it.
Most tuners go by sound, but that's not a very constant and accurate thing (Depending on the equipment and quality) So I was thinking I could build a hybrid of some sort, a small machine which would on it's initial boot would measure the tension of each string, then listen to the frequency all in order to measure the mass of the string, given that the length of the string is constant on every guitar (Which I think is true) then it could make adjustments to the tension in order to keep the frequency of the string in nearly perfect tune at all times.
Are my estimates and my science correct?

>given that the length of the string is constant on every guitar
Some guitars have adjustable bridges.
>>
>>8199484
No drop d tuning allowed...also can't capo like that...or play anything but an open string
>>
>>8199577
You're implying it'll always be tuning, besides an option for different tuning types seems like a rather necessary option. As you go up the fret board most lower end guitars tend to go out of tune a little bit, nothing you can do about that, so having the tuner always tuning would be a very bad idea.

Hello /sci/.

I am a politician. Mostly up and coming, as I now hold a largely consulting role. I still have quite a say in some matters.

I've always held a very deep-seated belief that the only pure cause is the advancement of humanity and thus science is the most important. I also think the best long-term solution of world issues comes through advancement and creative solutions.

However, it is really difficult to legislate for the scientific community. Scientists make largely shit politicians and officials, so very few people like that have any knowledge of the picture. Lobbying organizations, universities and such have little idea of legislation or the outside world and there is just a lack of connection.

Anyway, I find 4chan to be an awesome way to get random food for thought on many subjects.

I've already researched the topic of physics, chemistry, math and their funding and I have some ideas, but can you offer me your opinions on how the system should act towards your subject, the education system and such?

How do you fund original research without funding crazy people? It's hard to tell the difference. Maybe just fund both rather than neither.
>>
>>8199201
Main problem I find is trying to direct funding at all. Most of the time you're so unaware of the field you can't really specialize or come up with creative solutions and the bastards are clearly smarter and more knowledgeable than you, so they can twist it whichever way they like.

>implying gender is {0, 1}, not [0, 1]
Anyway, how should I treat genderfluids and trans people and so on when I want to decide if they are criminals or not?

Is it okay to put them all under "other"? This seems rather inconsiderate and I will probably be the victim of an SJW witchhunt. Should I code "other" as 0.5 or what?
18 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>implying gender is one-dimensional
You need at least a Banach space.
>>
>>8199147
>>8199162

Perhaps it would work better if you gave [0,1] the subset topology from the reals. Then defined a gender classification as an open set in the topology?
>>
>>8199147
The order of the set of all possible genders has been proven to be at least [math]\aleph_4[/math]. Have you not been keeping up with contemporary papers on queer theory?

So for these types of questions (DE, undetermined coefficients), are you just expected to use the product rule 60,000 times?

Is there something i'm missing?

I have to compute y, y' and y'', and then combine all the like terms.

What the fuck? This whole higher-order DE chapter has been a fucking shitshow of tedium. Do the product rule 5 milion times, do some linear algebra, factor the most retarded equations on earth.

What the fuck is wrong with DE? Why not just replace this whole course with a fucking graphing calculator.

Pls help.

No wonder mathematicians have the highest suicide rate out of all the stem fields.
>>
>>8198734
Ah. I found your problem OP.

See as a math major, I never had to study DEs or PDEs. Fuck that shit.

What you should have been doing is studying analysis (real, then complex, then whatever you want, maybe functional analysis, etc.) and topology. Topology is great, even algebraic topology. (but fuck abstract algebra.)

Hope that clears up the mistake.

I have, and I did it for a week straight while I went to work (software engineer).

In general, I found micro dosing to be beneficial at work and loads of fun.

Are 3d printers a meme? I remember reading an article in 2012 or 2013 where the author claimed in five years every home would own one and they'd become more common than regular printers. I thought it was bullshit at the time and we it looks like that prediction didn't come true.

no. They have been very useful in industry. We are beginning to see 3d printers come out that could be operated at one's local kinkos or walmart to produce stuff on the spot like we've actually been promised.

However, the companies behind said technology could fuck it up and because of patents no one else might be able to do it for like 20 years
