When you take a bite of an orange, aren't you basically eating the trees nutsack?
If you want. Though the parallel isn't all that accurate, there is some overlap.

You should really change your attitude towards eating nutsacks.
Relearning mathematics
Hey everyone, just wondering what the best route for me is when it comes to relearning everything from basic high school mathematics up to a college level.
I never had the best teachers during high school and I guess I lacked motivation then, but now I'm very interested in getting a strong understanding of the field and I just need a study path to follow.
I know there a tonnes of resources like Khan academy etc. But what do you suggest? Thanks for your time.
>>8208831
Just start with Calculus. All the trig, geometry and algebra that you need to know will show up. Say you get stuck with a trigonometry concept, look it up. You kill two birds with one stone this way. Math is best learned intertwined: it becomes real this way and much more intuitive.
That's how I did it. I sucked at math, so I started at Calculus.
>>8208842
That actually seems like a really great way of learning Math, I think I'll give this a shot. Thanks!
>>8208842
>this
I would begin with the intuition behind functions then starts with limits, then derivatives, then integrals and begin to piece how they all fit together. It's never too late anon.
Why do you think IQ is an accurate measure of intelligence when it's just based off some made up, /socialscience/ tier test?
It's more like a predictor of first order, and it's boring
>>8208597
>implying psychologists know what a Taylor expansion is
High IQ doesn't imply you will be automatically sucessful.
But on the other hand average to low IQ implies you will never achieve anything great.
Deal with it.
12:45 AM EDT SpaceX launch and landing thread. They're flying it back to a landing pad on solid ground again, for the second time. The first time worked and was the first successful recovery of a Falcon 9 first stage. Since then, three barge landing attempts were also successful, and three failed attempts have been made.

This is another Dragon resupply to the ISS, so it should be on NASA TV, too.

I've almost solved the Collatz conjecture guys. Just need a bit of help filling in the [math]\textsf{does_halt}[/math] function. any help? I'll give you co-author credits
It's implemented in almost every library, to an annoying degree. Christ, look up stack exchange or something before making a thread

Don't worry OP. I got the joke.
The rest of you should be ashamed of yourselves.
What are the most powerful chemicals for getting rid of spots/pimples?
no memes please
Hydrochloric acid, it's natural too!
Most powerful would be tretinoin, which is basically topical Accutane. For something you can get without a prescription, I'd suggest AHA (alphahydroxy acid, which is a chemical exfoliant).
The best thing you can do is to prevent them in the first place. First, you want an oil cleanser. You can buy these, but it's cheaper to make them yourself with some oil (pretty much anything works - olive and coconut are good choices) and an emulsifier like polysorbate 80. This is good for getting off all the excess sebum that's accumulated over the day from your pores and face. After that you want a pH neutral cleanser to get off the excess oil - lots of face washes are basic which is harsh on your face and messes with the surface bacteria that you actually want there.
Other than that, you should moisturize and wear SPF daily. If your skin is dry or damaged, it'll overproduce sebum, and when sebum clogs your pores, anaerobic bacteria multiplies and that's what causes common acne.
Bless, t. skincare nerd.
Not eating dairy or excessive sweeteners.
Change your pillow case nightly, or sleep on a towel.
Stop using soap on your face, shampoo as well. Only use warm water and lightly wash with a washcloth.
Acne = gone. You're a machine man, this stuff ain't arcane magic. Accutane is also terrible from what I've heard and read, never should you have to resort to that. There is always a more fundamental problem to be solved.
Any news on Tabby's Star? Are cometfags still BTFO?

no news, probably won't be any for a while
we're pretty much waiting until the next dimming event
in the meantime people are pointing all sorts of shit at it and finding nothing but to be honest they're kind of useless
>no evidence of pulsed optical signals
>no evidence of directed radio wave signals
well no fucking shit, no hypothesis strongly supported the presence of either of those signals being detected
Any of you guys interested in coherent control?
>>8207969
i.e. control of molecular dynamics on femtosecond timescales via spectral pulse shapers coupled to evolutionary algorithms
yes
does this relate to control systems, or control theory in any way?
When, if ever, will a computer powerful enough be made to answer the question of how to reverse entropy.

First of all, I believe that I’m an arrogant person, so bear with me.
During the last 6 years of my life, I have been surrounded by very capable and intelligent people at my university, and I really like the way they enrich my life by having conversations about science related matters or just talking about the best methods to succeed in your job.
I’m grateful for that, but the moment I step outside the university, it seems that almost everyone is a retard. It seems like people are not just ignorant of primary school concepts, but they are always willing to defend any point in any argument regardless of how little foundation they have.
I tried and succeed at having normal conversations, but it is extremely boring to me, so I don’t see the point.
I barely have time to see my friends anymore, since everyone is following his own path.
My question is: how do you deal with boredom and the false feeling of superiority when you have to deal with people on a daily basis?
Book smarts isn't the end all be all.
You might be good at x.
A retard might be good at y.
Use your intellectual superiority to solve for y and you will see that either you can't and are also retarded, or that you have common ground in being good at something
>>8206807
>My question is: how do you deal with boredom and the false feeling of superiority when you have to deal with people on a daily basis?
Hate everyone equally, including yourself.
>>8206819
I already hate myself, but that’s a different problem for a different day.
I would like to focus on not hating people that don’t deserve it.
My mother - on the advice of my sister (who has been into homeopathy, herbal healing, reiki / energy healing and other nonsense for a long time) has been deluded into thinking that she's infested with "parasites," particularly worms. She plans to take Wormwood extract and some junk containing walnut shells to rid herself of the parasites. She says this is different from the other woo.
I suggested that she go to a medical doctor with her concerns instead of diagnosing and treating herself. She refused, stating that this has been done since the beginning of time.
What do I do? Should I simply let her ingest possibly dangerous quack remedies, or are there good ways to gently show her the right direction?
If anyone has been in a similar situation, your input would be appreciated.
>>8206038
Beat the living shit out of her.
>>8206040
Kek
Mostly you can't.
When someone is falling for something like that, it's because they are in the habit of believing whatever makes them feel good. Believing nonsense isn't a mistake, it's a way of life. Believing nonsense becomes a part of your reward system, it becomes part of what makes you feel good day to day. Like any other act which releases serotonin and dopamine in the brain, belief can become an addiction, a belief addiction. Thinking you've figured something out or discovered some forgotten knowledge feels good, and people frequently become addicted to this behavior and jump at any chance to tell themselves that they've discovered something new. This is why most people who believe nonsense believe lots of nonsense in all kinds of different subjects.
Believing nonsense is an addiction. Even if you have enough sway with someone for them to recognize that something is nonsense, it doesn't matter, they will continue to find nonsense and believe it because they're junkies. Junkies for believing they found or discovered something amazing. They don't need logic, logic won't help. They need rehab.

Why is psychology still seen as a major area of science? Is it just for people who want an easy science degree?
We have Neuroscience, Machine Learning and to a lesser extent Psychiatry, which do the same thing as psychology in a more empirical manner. A majority of psych experiments could not even be replicated.
What's the point, /sci/? It feels like having alchemy as a modern science because it's like chemistry but simplified.
>>8205104
>Psychiatry
Psychiatry is a field that should be scrubbed right out of existence.
chemist here, I fucking hated that letter in my 1st year
>>8205111
Kind of amazed we still consider psychiatry a medical degree, even though psychology is not considered one.
It made sense before MRI, when the brain was a mystery machine, but now it's a meme field.
