Causation vs correlation

When a correlation is 100% strong, there must be a causation, right? But how do I find out the direction of the causation?

Let's take for example the observation that 100% of people who wear leather jackets are douchebags. Cam we conclude that leather jackets turn people into douchebags or that douchebags prefer to wear leather jackets? Which one is the right explanation?

>douchebags

Define 'douchebag'.

>douchebags prefer to wear leather jackets

This one, as douchebags exist without leather jackets, however this scenario leather jackets don't exist/aren't worn by anyone who isn't a douchebag.

As in, the wouldn't exist if nobody was ever around to buy them/wear them.

The answer is both. There are myriad studies about how clothing, and specifically uniforms, affect human interactions and behavior within a given culture.

I stopped understanding math or even trying in the fourth grade. Biggest mistake of my life.

I'm about to go to college and I have no path to follow but the usual fine arts and those bullshit courses for dumb people. I'm 20.

Is there still hope for me, /sci/?

Can you guys recommend me a really good book that will give me tons of knowledge? I don't even know how to find out the value of x.

Sorry for being a dumb ni**er. Help me out, I wanna change.

Alright you fuck, your gonna have to spend hours and hours a day learning now to make up for your past.

You are probably going to want to start at algebra one, try khan academy, or finding pdfs of algebra one math books.

Before you get to college you must at bare minimum be through algebra 2 and geometry.

/sci/, this is frustrating me. Help me out.

Let's say I travel 10 miles at 20 mph - that takes 0.5 hrs.

Now let's say I travel half the distance at 15 mph and the other half at 25 mph. That comes out at 0.5333 hrs.

My question is, why don't they both take 0.5 hrs. Why doesn't travelling 5 mph faster the last half of the distance make up for travelling 5 mph slower the first half of the distance?
17 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
You're looking at average speed over distance, while you should be looking at average speed over time. The average speed over distance is indeed 20mph (you travel equal distances 15 and 25 mph), but the average speed over time is lower.

The reason it's lower is because you spend less time traveling 25 mph, since it takes less time to cover the 5 miles. So the last half where you're travelling faster can't make up for the first half where you're travelling slower. Lower average speed means a longer travel time, hence the 0.5333 hrs you came up with.
>>
The distance travelled is equal to the average velocity (over the entire trip), multiplied by the time. Since it takes longer to travel 5 miles at 15 mph, the average velocity of the trip is less than 20 mph

I don't know a shit about physics, but i have a question:
If somebody "thinks" (processes information) in higher speed than normal person, will this dude see everything in slow motion?
16 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Why dude? We have 2 species on this planet co-existing at very different speeds. Women, being unable to evolve quickly are living a life twice as fast as men up to around age 40.
Men have slowed down, mature much much later and last well into their 90's.

Unverifiable

How would you determine whether one person's second was faster than another person's second? They'd both just say it takes a second.

Damn, i didn't consider that.
Since you're born with it you couldn't be aware.
Buuut.. Couldn't exist a a way to verify it, i mean what if you make a comparison between 2 persons?
I know that both persons will see the same second in the clock, but couldn't you measure their reactions or something like that.
Of course i'm hypothetically talking about somebody that has a noticeable difference in his thinking speed in respect to a regular human.

Is homomorphism induced by covering map surjective? Does it naturally comes from surjectivity of covering map? Why is Hatcher's book not readable?

ITT we discuss, how important sight is for scientific advancement.
Let's propose there were a planet where no species evolved eyes, and sonar would be the main form of navigation. Also, there's a species with intelligence comparable to humans. How far could they advance technologically? Would they ever become aware of space existing?

You baiting? And what I ment was that sonar won't work in vacuum, so they would have no way of gathering info from outer space, so they wouldn't know about stars. They'd have no idea about universe existing

Depends. If used for sheer escapism, yes. If they're a proxy for self discovery, to immerse yourself in another world, or whatever, in a way that adds to the total spectrum of thoughts and ideas your mind is composed of then no.

This is really too individualized to give an absolute answer, or even lay out a rough heuristic. Depends what you want and find valuable. I haven't played any video games in a few months and feel.. better, I suppose. Only because it broke many of my routines, habits, and mental cycles. ie, I would get real high on stimulants / anxiolytics and play some Unreal Tournament when stressed instead of just taking some deep breaths and focusing on something else. I would indulge and add to the addled state. Likewise, if I felt detached and half dead I might play Don't Starve or something for 20 hours straight and go to work in a subideal state.

Depends on a lot. I got into a habit of using games to modify or expand a given state. You cannot allow yourself to integrate things into yourself in that way. It will always lead to greater anxiety and overall flimsiness.

I do too but still can focus and just either read the same sentence over and over or want to fall asleep(usually after eating).
>20 hours
well i stay awake around 14 hours (9h sleep) since I understand how important is and I really care about it.

Blu-Ray Disc's have more storage than Other Discs because the Laser is blue instead of Red. Because blue has a shorter wavelength than red, it can send more information in one second unlike a red laser. Using that logic, Can someone invent Gamma-Ray Inc. where they use a laser with the wavelength of a Gamma Ray (An Uranium Nucleus) and store even more info. Just wondering.

>The laser would be invisible though.

>>8202550
>Because blue has a shorter wavelength than red, it can send more information in one second unlike a red laser
This is incorrect. Shorter wavelength means that the information can be stored more densely on the surface of the disk. The laser itself is not sending any information at all.

As to your other point, the answer is no for multiple reasons.
1. gamma radiation produced by nuclear decay is isotropic, meaning it has no preferred direction.
2. gamma and x-ray radiation is high enough energy to penetrate solid matter with ease. Visible light is incapable of doing this, which makes it perfect for reading surface features like the BluRay disk. For this same reason, gamma radiation from radioactive sources cannot be collimated and turned into a laser.
3. You need a lot of light to read surface features. Even if you could use it for this purpose (you can't), radioactive sources don't produce that much gamma radiation and you would need a very strong source with a small volume. This would never me made available to consumers outside of government/high security laboratories.
>>
>>8202550
If you had a gamma ray laser, you'd make more money selling it to the military, I think.

Same poster here. I would like to point out that if the atomic lattice properties of a surface could be manufactured such that it could store data consistently, soft x-ray lasers could be used to read the data. I don't see this as a viable way to store or read information though. Equipment like this is quite large and essentially useless outside a laboratory setting.
