"Best" is relative; it depends on what exactly you're looking for. Every Alife sim sucks at something, and is most interesting in a particular area of focus.

Question: Are there any alife systems you know of that focus on developmental biology, where the organism's structure isn't directly determined by genetics but instead develops from a simpler structure according to a program encoded by the genome? I suspect this could be an interesting aspect to play with, as structures that arise through such a system should be inherently more 'evolvable'.

But if not, then assuming no energy losses perhaps you could get that thing to oscillate forever. That's not what people usually have in mind when they're talking about perpetual motion devices (an idealized mass on a spring would be a perpetual motion device by that definition).

I use Arch for my personal computer and Debian for my server. If you're in the sciences, it's a good skill to have. If you're new to linux, I recommend installing Kubuntu in a virtualbox. I used to run Kubuntu on an old machine which is now dead (not because of Kubuntu) and it's pretty easy and slick. Since it's just Ubuntu with KDE, it's one of the easiest distributions to troubleshoot in my opinion.

It seems that we must encounter another catastrophe, if one is interested in reducing the number of humans, as opposed to the more pleasant option of consciously massaging the number downwards over generations - every human is always going to try to "get ahead" of the others (intra-species competition, again), and this is, in this case anyway, exactly what fucks any effort to improve the lot of the species in toto. We need some Independence Day-tier shit to happen in order to come together as a species, and the moment it is resolved, it's back to business as usual.

OTOH maybe having a glut of humans isn't so bad. Who knows, Ebola could mutate airborne, or those antibiotics really could stop working overnight. In which cases it's better to have a 30-1% survival rate with a much larger absolute number (starting from 7.5 billion), than a much smaller absolute number.
