Canon entry level bodies have faggy controls.
Not as terrible as nikon, though.
Anyone have a recommendation? I would really like a TC-1 but I'm not about to spend $500 on a point & shoot...
I'd really just like an Av mode and decent optics... but beyond that I really don't care.

Without this turning into a shitposting fest, could we discuss whether or not we should recommend this book to new anons who want to learn about photography. I see it recommended regularly in different threads and, having read it, I think we might be doing more harm than good to novices.
My problem with the book is that even the latest editions of it offer distinctly bad advice and misportray optics work at higher and lower ends of aperture. This is particularly the case when it comes to diffraction. Peterson says that when shooting at f/22 "any worries about loss of sharpness and contrast are just as overblown as the Y2K fears were!"
and blames the fear-mongering on a couple of '"big" photography forum Web sites'. This is, of course, absolutely incorrect and diffraction can be seen very clearly even on entry-level cameras.
I have a few older books from the film days that don't have any of this nonsense, but do you guys know any other more modern books that don't discuss film defects while at the same time contain fewer fairy tales and useless anecdotes that just waste the reader's time.
Sample of what we're talking about. Both pictures are taken at ISO 100 and 30 second exposure roughly two minutes apart. The left one is at f/22, right one at f/16. While neither is ideal, the difference is quite noticeable.
>>2817262
Sorry I can't help you since I don't have experience in this, but could you recommend one of those from the film days you talk about? I have the John Shaw's Nature Photographer's Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques. I didn't have any problems with metering after following what he says on exposure but just wanted to know if you would recommend anything else, or if simply there isn't anything else to know for a beginner.

Holy shit, again anon?
Did Peterson fuck your mom or something?
Be harsh, let's become better photographers.

I've been shooting a shit ton over the last 2 years and fancy some peer to peer feedback, will be posting around 65 shots.
01: I sat down and spoke to a lady about her ex abusive husband who used to beat her and lock her in the house. I enjoyed connecting with the subject and while she was telling me her story I took 2-3 photos. I did not want to overwhelm her while she spoke.

I just got my first DSLR and I'm almost solely interested in nightysky / astrophotography. That being said I just have the started kit with the 18-55mm lense. I plan on getting a couple lenses in a month or 2. Any help on Settings for the time being and what my first purchase for astrophotography should be?
>>2810032
first order of business is to get yourself a tripod.
>>2810032
You're going to get torn up by some of the posters on here for your thread, but you can do some okay stuff with the setup you got.
You can prop your camera against a shirt or something to makeshift a tripod until you buy one, but for starters, I'd try the 18mm end of the lens, and try and find a super bright star or the moon and use Live View magnification and manual focus to fine-tune the focus as sharp as possible, then because of the rotation of the planet, you're limited to about 25 second exposure before the stars begin to drag and smear, called star-trails.
To figure out what shutter speed to use, you can take your focal length you like, and divide it by 400 (some say 500, but let's be safe). so, your 18mm plus the crop factor means about 27 seconds. Now, if you used a 100mm lens, you could only take a 0.25 second exposure without getting star trails, which is very low. If you had, say, a 10mm lens, you could do 40 seconds, much higher than 18mm. so the difference is big dependign on focal length.
For aperture, wide open the kit lens is going to be icky, so use f/5.6, but also try another shot as wide as the aperture goes, cause it can make the image a lot brighter.
I'd try at 1600, then 3200, then 6400 ISO, and see how well the stars come out. Make sure to set the self timer on to minimize shake after you press the shutter.
Be aware that astrophotography setups are very expensive, and it's a deep rabbit hole and also inevitable hole in your wallet and bank account, but you could make do with just a wide prime, like some of the Samyangs people have been using.

Some break down IR exposure for me.
I have a shit ton of Nikkor glass with the red tick marks for IR focusing on them and I have what I believe to be a 720 or 820nm filter that you can't see through.
Do I expose for this like I would for visible light? Also doesn't it expose as regular BW film without the IR filter?
>>2810779
You should specify the particular IR film you're using.
You'll probably want to overexpose by 5 stop and it will probably look like a normal BW film at box speed w/o the filter.

And to start, some shots from my first bulk roll of HP5. My preferred EM has started leaking light like a bitch, but only in the top corner of a few negs. I glued in some film canister felt, so we'll see how that goes...

Hey guys what are some of the best photos that y'all have taken in Manhattan? I'm just getting started so I want to see the pros' incredible photos. Here's my "best one"
Not OP but I am visiting NYC in June and would also like to see shots from you guys from NYC
OP here, I also took this on the pier of Jersey City. iPhone 5s photos are such bad quality desu
What are the meme/overdone locations for photography in NYC? Like the shot of Manhattan bridge from Dumbo.

What happened to instagram? I'm pretty sure they're getting prepped to start using it as a mass advertising machine, and forcing you to pay to advertise. But when did it happen that now only 18 of the most recent photos show up on the search feed?
Pic related, it's a search for #canon, and only shows 18 photos
I just did the same search and got this.
Maybe I'm not updated
>>2815862
Yeah, it only stayed like that for a few hours. I'm guessing it was just a test to get some statistics on making the switch. In the near future they're going to be rolling out a "Facebook" type timeline, basically forcing out most peoples content.
>>2815648
I dunno, I'm really pissed at the changes to the feed though. It's entirely fucked who I see and I don't have any clue how to fix it or if it even is fixable. Like I have a mix of large accounts and much smaller accounts that I follow, and now I literally never see the smaller accounts.
So this picture got removed from r/earthporn because they said its "inappropriate due to the landscape being silhouetted."
Tell me /p/, is that the most retarded thing you've ever heard and why.

Why are we talking about reddit again?
So my cousin and her fiancé asked me if I can take some pictures at her wedding this weekend.
They hired a photographer but apparently (s)he won't be staying until the end of the ceremony, so what they're looking for is mainly pictures of them at the end, walking down the aisle together (pic related is the kind of picture my cousin told me she liked), and some snaps of the family at the ceremony afterwards.
I've got an X-Pro2, X70 (28mm equivalent FOV), X100S (35mm equivalent FOV), and my girlfriend's X-T1. For lenses, I've got the 14/2.8, 16/1.4, 23/1.4, 35/1.4, 56/1.2, 90/2, and the 16-55/2.8. I've also got speed lights and a few light modifiers.
It will be indoors and dimly lit.
Considering that it's out of town and I'll be flying there, I want to travel light. I usually shoot studio which is obviously a lot more forgiving than an event, so I want to make sure I get it right.
What do I take? I'm split between the zoom for versatility and the primes for low light capability. My current plan is the X-Pro2 with the zoom since it can do higher ISO's better, and taking a few primes to use with the X-T1 - 16, 35, 56, 90? Plus a speed light and a couple of gels to match ambient lighting.
I'm probably overthinking this but obviously I don't want to fuck it up. Also, any tips would be truly appreciated.
To summarize,
>mirrorless
>dark
>moving subjects
How fucked am I?

Use your XPro2 and 16-55 in in high performance mode, medium sized zone AF, AF-C, and continuous low. You'll be just fine.
For safety, keep the X-T1 on your shoulder with the 16mm on it. Also medium zone and AF-C. That lens has great AF, and the added aperture should help the X-T1 out.
You'll be just fine.
You're gonna make it.
Anyway to find out what equipment their photographer is shooting with? Dimensions of the room the ceremony will be in? Your available mobility?
I'd go for precision at the ceremony, and then open up and be playful at the reception. That's generally what people are looking for given the contrast between the ceremony and the party.
56 or 35 IMO. maybe one for each segment.
>>2815433

Not OP, but I've owned an X Pro 1, XT-1 - before and after FW4.0, an X100S, an X100T and now an X Pro 2 and I still can't bring myself to use zone focus instead of single point.
What do you use it for, and how do you go about deciding where to place the zone, what size, etc? I feel like I'm half using the camera lol.
Which setting do you use in vuescan for your negs?
>>2815280
I use the 'do my own colour correction because I'm not a spoon-fed retard' setting.
>it works great
Do you scan bw film in color and than desaturate or in bw mode? I heard somewhere that color mode allows you to capture all the information, more than bw mode
I just posted several long posts in the last film thread about some vuescan basics, including screengrabs.
