Almost all MF cameras were made for working pros, so they're designed and built to take a beating. I'm a particular fan of the Mamiya 645 series - nothing so far out of the ordinary, but a number of lenses with no equivalent in other systems, and onward compatible in the digital age.

I don't even know if I need an DSLR but I think I'll get one to try this as a hobbie. As I'm not sure if this will be for me, I want the cheapest one (within reason, I'd pay a little bit more for something clearly better). What my research has shown me its that I could get anything I want and get the same results as I don't have any fucking idea. Later, when I have learned, maybe I could choose better. I know that I'd shoot in poor lightning conditions, and I like skies, stars, city night lights, sundowns, etc.


Bearing that in mind, any tips for getting a cheap reasonable DSLR in London? I don't need the best gear ever as I don't know how to use or if I'll stick to this.

Spend that 200 dollars of birthday money on an f100 and a nifty 50 instead of that god awful FM10/kit lens.

Pick up that shitty 35mm canon that's in the basement and use that with the dozens of rolls your neighbor has expiring and get them developed at the local place and not wahlgreens

Keep your negatives you developed from that high school course so you can remember what the fuck you took on them

Wait until the a7s is out and get that

If a camera doesn't have the best of all four of those, it's not a professional camera.

Not that it really matters. You can get excellent results out of entry cameras and shit results out of pro cameras. Just depends if you know how to do anything with it.

I have a 16-45mm lens which is nice and sharp but in a few occasions I found it being not long enough. Should I replace it with a 17-70 which is optically a bit worse for somewhat twice the money I can sell the 16-45mm?
Or just keep it and switch to the 70-200 when I need a longer lens? Maybe get a pancake instead for my GAS?

Is there still any real reason to spring for the Nikon 35 1.4G when the Sigma 35 Art seems to do literally everything better at a third of the price?

Objectively it's the weather sealing and the AF being designed by Nikon.

Subjectively lots of people go on about the "character" of the Nikon 35, the colours, the nano-coating, the bokeh.

Don't quite know how much is marketing BS but this is my first real expensive lens purchase so thought I'd ask.
