Do you think I should go to photography university ? I wisited it today and everyone looks like some stoned degenerate brain-dead politically correct proggressive feminazi commie liberal.

Look for job openings as a photographer.
#1 You wont find any.
#2 They wont say "required degree in photography".
#3 This is one of the few fields left where merit still counts.

I don't care about "working" as a photographer. If I want, I can go to any other university. For me, my work is highly personal.
Using the related image as an vague example can any of you guys recommend me some noteworthy photographers that are known for capturing the absurd?
Originally I was going to use the word surreal, but I think "surreal" lacks the impact and shock value that I desire.
I will also note that it does not need to be a fabrication, capture of real scenes would also be good if they fit into the category of absurd. Martin Parr on acid perhaps.

No, creepy is good I'm not after anything too specific at this stage.

I am doing tourism in the USA. And now I'm in New Jersey.
While I was taking some photos with my Canon t2i.
Some guy came asking me if I wanted to buy a camera.
He offered me a Canon 1dx plus 5 L lenses for 1000 usd. He told me he works for a cancer institution and someone donated some photography equipment as charity.
I bought it. I had money saved for a Sony a6300 anyway.
Seems I found the end of the rainbow.

A friend of mine had all of his gear stolen this past week, about $30k worth.
Authorities were notified as well as local pawn shops.
Other than keeping an eye on ebay and craigslist, does anyone have any suggestions on how else to try to track this stuff down?
For gearfags, it was a 1Dx with about 5 L lenses.

Does he have it insured?
>>2820309
It was stolen from his car, and it is covered under his car insurance.
Mind you, some of the lenses he has have since gone up in price from when they were purchased.
If it isn't found, he can claim it but will only get a portion of the full amount of what his gear is worth. So physically getting the gear back is optimal for his case.

Total noob here:
I took some photos while on a ride. If i remember correctly all are shot with the camera's auto HDR mode - took the easy way out.
Will be posting a couple images from slightly different angles.
What I would like tips on the most is composition, but all other tips are very welcome.
Hope my posting this in a new thread is OK by the rules.

Hello /p/, I've lurked here and posted occasionally for around a year at this point and finally have enough time to post some pictures from a trip I had to the Philippines last summer. This was the first time I had brought along a somewhat modern camera with me on a trip and was also the first time I tried to shoot in raw. Looking back on these I realize there's some very obvious errors that I made, but most of this was me trying to get my feel for how good composition/lighting/subject works. I'd appreciate any constructive criticism on these.

Good afternoon, /p/
I've gotten a lot of questions from here and elsewhere over the years about how I meter for certain scenes and different film types so I finally made a detailed blog post about it. It's especially helpful for those crazy backlit Ektar photos as well as some other situations. It's a long one but I hope you guys find some good info in there. Here's the link: http://www.alexburkephoto.com/blog/2016/3/28/metering-and-exposing-color-film
I don't have a ton of new images to post but I may as well dump them here while I'm at it. Here's one that's older but I just recently had it drum scanned by some guy I met on Flickr.

Is there a correlation between the two for you? Do you ever take music with you when you go shooting? Does it inspire you? If so what do you listen to when you're out there?
For me, music is the driving force in everything creative in me but I still love photography. So for the past year i've been trying to combine the two in photographing live shows. But getting into that field is so competitive. Plus I'm still trying to figure out what camera would be best for me at a decent price
Anyways

>I went to the promised land, I found out the promised land isn't quite heaven.
Hey there guys, just posting to make you sad.
First up. Film Is Dead.
Pic related is the world famous Yodobashi Camera Shinjuku film cooler. All dat glorious 4x5 and 8x10 slide film, all those 120 pro-packs, many emulsions.
Hate to break it to you guys, but the boxes are all fucking empty. Special order only.
The prices aren't anything special. There is a better range of black and white emulsions available in Australia. Acros 100 is it. You might find the normal Ilfor or Kodak range too.
For 35mm colour, you're shooting Fuji, unless you want to pay through the ass for overpriced Kodak. Special emulsions include Superia 400 Premium, which is a few hundred yen more expensive and gets you "better" Asian skin tones, Venus 800, and Natura 1600. As we all know, fast film is for children, and looks like ass, unless you overexpose it, thus making it slow film, so I didn't bother. Then there's Fujicolour 100, which is cheap and sharp. Then there's Velvia 100 and 50, and then nothing.
In 120, you get Fuji Pro160NS, Fuji Pro400H, the Velvias, or you're back to highway robbery prices for Ol' Yeller.
When you're not at Yodabashi HQ, and you find a little print shop that still has some film for sale, it's in 3x27's of 400 Premium, or fuck off. You can't buy film at non-photo shops. You can develop film at print shops, which are reasonably easy to find, but they're all run by super old people who would have retired 15 years ago anywhere else. They mail out E6. The prices are as per normal. You will be treated like a crazy person when you ask for film or film services.
Japanese people will *not* use expired film, if you see some on a shelf in a little print shop, ask to buy it and there's every likelihood they'll give it to you for free. I was given 4 rolls of Provia 400X (pic related) and 2 rolls of Neopan 400 by the old gentleman I got to process my film. He treated me like a crazy person.

Secondly. Buy your cameras on eBay.
There are a faintly ridiculous number of secondhand camera shops in Tokyo. I spent several days schlepping around many of them, thanks to guides posted by JapanCameraHunter and TokyoCameraStyle.
Believe it or not, rare cameras are rare. You won't find hard to find things, and when you do, they will be expensive. Camera collecting is a national sport in Japan, and they're better at it than you.
I saw ONE Konica Hexar. It was 65000 yen.
I saw ZERO GR's.
All of the FM3A's were over 50000.
I saw ONE 28/2.8 Ai-S, and I bought it.
I saw 3 GW690's; 1 broken one for 20000, 1 beat to shit one for 45000, 1 minter for 70000.
These are not good odds, or good prices.
I went into at least a dozen stores.
There is sweet fuck all in the way of MF gear, and when you find it it's beat to shit, or very expensive. (Except for Pentax MF lenses, they can't give that shit away)
As I said above, you will find the gear you want cheaper and a thousand times easier on the internet. Just do it. Don't come to Japan hoping to find something hard to find.
Pic related is what I bought back with me.

Yes, but the self awareness to realize that most of us will never ever be in those situations seems like the hardest part of buying gear. Getting things that would be better for you IF... is a trap with a big price tag, and no real world benefit.
