LOS ANGELES – Richard Marx says he wasn't a hero for apparently intervening after an unruly passenger disrupted a Korean Air flight and had to be restrained.

Marx and his wife, Daisy Fuentes, documented the incident on Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday. The "Right Here Waiting" singer and Fuentes, a former MTV VJ, were married last year.

Fuentes wrote that her husband was the first to help subdue the man, and Marx criticized the flight crew for failing to properly restrain the man.

A Korean Air spokesman confirmed the incident aboard the flight from Hanoi to Seoul and that photos on Marx's Facebook page were shot during the flight. Cho Hyun Mook said the matter was under investigation and that it appears that crew members responded in accordance with airline policies.

Marx posted a later update saying he and Fuentes were home safe and saying he wasn't a "big `hero"' but "just did what I would hope anyone would do in the same situation."

Citing Incheon police, the Yonhap News Agency reported that the passenger was a 34-year-old South Korean man who became drunk after having two and a half glasses of hard liquor on the flight. Incheon police officials could not be reached for comment.

>Nut rage incident

The nut rage incident, also referred to as nutgate or nut return (Korean: 땅콩 회항, Ttangkong hoehang), occurred on December 5, 2014, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, when Korean Air vice president Heather Cho, having been dissatisfied with the way a flight attendant served her nuts on the plane, ordered the aircraft to taxi back to the airport's gate before takeoff.

First-class passengers, including Cho, were given nuts bagged in their original packaging (in conformity with the airline's procedures); Cho had expected them to be served on a plate in first class. Cho questioned the cabin crew chief about the standard procedure of serving the nuts. After a heated confrontation during which Cho assaulted him, Cho ordered him off the plane, requiring a return to the gate and delaying the flight by about 20 minutes. When the incident became public, Cho and Korean Air were heavily criticized, and in the aftermath, Cho resigned from one of her several executive positions at Korean Air. She was subsequently found guilty in Korean court of obstructing aviation safety and given a twelve-month prison sentence. The flight attendant and cabin crew chief returned to their positions by April 2016

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/19/us/politics/obama-commutations-pardons-clemency.html

>WASHINGTON — Just weeks before leaving office, President Obama on Monday issued 78 pardons and commuted the sentences of 153 prisoners, extending his acts of clemency to a total of 1,324 individuals, by far the largest use of the presidential power to show mercy in the nation’s history.

>Of the 231 people who received a pardon or a reduced sentence from Mr. Obama, virtually all had been serving sentences under tough antidrug laws, including those convicted of low-level, nonviolent crimes like possession of cocaine.

>Those who received pardons had completed their sentences and are, in the words of Neil Eggleston, the White House counsel, now leading “a productive and law-abiding post-conviction life, including by contributing to the community in a meaningful way.” The pardons wipe away any legal liabilities from a conviction.

>Commutations are different. They typically shorten the sentences of people in prison, often by many years, but do not eliminate a conviction or restore rights lost, such as the right to vote. In many cases, the people selected to have their sentences commuted have participated in drug treatment, or educational or vocational technology courses while in prison.

>One example: Anthony DeWayne Gillis of Supply, Va., was convicted in 2005 of possessing cocaine, making false statements and possessing a firearm in “furtherance of drug trafficking.” He was sentenced to 145 years in prison. Mr. Obama’s grant of commutation reduces the sentence to 20 years.

>day cares

Have there been a lot of violent incidents in day cares? I don't really see the point of this expansion otherwise, because as much as I want to believe everyone is /k/-level safety minded, this just opens it up for idiots to leave their guns out for curious kids to shoot themselves.

College campuses to me have also been a grey zone of usefulness. Professors and staff with weapons? Sure. Students who may or may not be drunk at a party? Students who 1/2 of which are still teenagers with not quite that much common sense? To me these are just recipes for disaster compared to the number of lives lost in rare active shooter events. I guess I would need to see more data to see if the cost/benefit is good; if the reduction in petty crime and active shooters is worth the increase in stupidity with a gun.

F
or the second week in a row, I stood in Gwanghwamoon, Seoul’s city center, among nearly a million protesters who had gathered to demand President Park Geun-hye’s impeachment. I have seen similar scenes before in South Korea, which has a long-standing culture of protest. This time, however I was struck by sadness. There is more to the current mood than meets the eye.

I was born and raised in Seoul in the 1970s during the military dictatorship of the current president’s father, Park Jung-hee. Park Geun-hye is embroiled in a massive corruption scandal involving her longtime confidante, Choi Sun-shil, to whom she leaked classified documents and granted unseemly favors. Choi had exhorted bribes from Korea’s largest companies, including Samsung, profited from shell companies and business ventures using the presidential connection, and despite having no official position, wielded unchecked power over the inner workings of the government.
It gets stranger: Choi is the daughter of Choi Tae-min, Park’s spiritual adviser who claimed to communicate with the spirit of her dead mother (she was assassinated in 1974). It is the Confucian and Shamanistic aspect of the entire setup that remains disturbing. After all, in 2013, Park herself was elected, less because she was the first woman to run for office or a seasoned politician, but more because she was her father’s daughter, and her supporters were older voters in their 50s and 60s who felt oddly nostalgic and indebted. With the passing of time, this generation seems to have softened on the memories of Park Jung-hee’s reign of authoritarian repression and torture, remembering only the rapid economic growth that happened under his watch. There’s also residual sympathy for the daughter, as both of her parents were assassinated.

>South Korean protests aren’t always peaceful.

It’s worth noting how sanitized and orderly the South Korean million-man march was. Imagine a 360-degree horizon completely filled with protesters, all holding up neat signs that read “Park Geun-hye, Step down” and shouting out, in unison, “Impeach Park Geun-hye” only when ordered to do so by the organizers—a private association of labor unions, student, and civic groups. There were volunteers passing out free candles, which serve as the symbol of defiance, as well as the plastic mats for those who preferred to sit so that they would not dirty their clothes. There were many mothers that brought young children, and at street corners, the citizens took on themselves to direct traffic to prevent accidents. From the stage were the musicians of democratically selected genres ranging from hip-hop to folk, and people sang along in harmony, and at some point, the scene resembled a karaoke open mic. At midnight, the protest ended, but many stayed behind to clean up and recycle garbage. Nearby, tens of thousands of riot police were stationed for emergency, but they were merely young men in their early 20s—South Korea has a 21-month-long mandatory military service—looking meek and somewhat bored.
>>
>>87223

South Korean protests aren’t always so peaceful. In 1960, a student was killed by the police during an anti-government protest, which then caused 100,000 students to march to the Blue House to eventually bring down autocratic Lee Syng-man (also known as Syngman Rhee), the American-sponsored first president, from serving a fourth term.* In the 1980s, it was violent protests in the southern city of Gwangju as well as the later ones including the “June Struggle,” during which hundreds of students were killed, which eventually ended the dictatorship of President Park’s father. As recently as last year, an activist farmer died due to a fatal injury from a police water cannon at a protest demanding Park keep her campaign pledge to fix rice prices.

These days, public protests have become cathartic rituals. Every time the national team plays a World Cup match, millions wearing the “Red Devil” T-shirts take to the street, not exactly inspired by a soccer frenzy but rather nationalism and collectivism. These events can quickly turn political, instigated by the organizations that exploit the occasion to push their agenda.
In the early 2000s, anti-American sentiments were egged on and intensified following an incident in which American soldiers ran over two Korean schoolgirls and were acquitted. Koreans were heartbroken and came out in droves, singing Yoon Min-suk’s anthem “Fucking U.S.A.” (Most Americans probably don’t realize that Psy, the lovable showman behind the viral global hit “Gangnam Style,” was once better known for rapping a song from this era titled, “Dear America,” with lyrics including “Kill fucking Yankees ... kill them all slowly and painfully.”)
>>
>>87224

The protests directly influenced the 2003 presidential election. Backed by the left, Roh Moo-hyun, an inexperienced former labor lawyer, won against all expectations. In 2009, millions congregated across the country after Roh committed suicide during a bribery inquiry. Swayed by the collective sadness though, people forgot about the actual scandal and its implication, and instead the protest became a massive Confucian rite where they bowed in tears to their dead former president’s photo in makeshift shrines. In 2011, I was living undercover in Pyongyang when Kim Jong-il, the Great Leader, died—and I could not help but notice how similarly North Koreans reacted to his death as they wept in groups, bowing to his photo at a shrine, as though they had just lost their parent.

Such a group sentiment reflects a 5000-year-old Korean heritage of feudalism mixed with Confucianism in which citizens show enormous deference to their leaders. Moreover, this small nation about half the size of California has always been dominated by foreign powers, historically China and Japan and in the modern era, the United States in South Korea and Russia in the North. Having always lived under threat of the big brother, Koreans are good at mobilizing in groups, but individual dissents are rare. Having been underdogs most of their history, they are also highly emotional in their reactions, which can be a strength as well as a weakness.

Electoral College Vote Seals Trump White House Victory

The Electoral College formalized Donald Trump's election victory on Monday despite protests around the country to encourage GOP electors to abandon the Republican.

The president-elect easily racked up the 270 electoral votes needed to send him to the White House. Interest in the normally mundane voting process spiked this year as opposition to Trump continues to fester, fueled by Clinton's success in capturing over 2.6 million more votes than her Republican opponent.

"Today marks a historic electoral landslide victory in our nation's democracy," Trump said in a statement. "I thank the American people for their overwhelming vote to elect me as their next President of the United States."
He added, "this election represents a movement that millions of hard working men and women all across the country stood behind and made possible. With this historic step we can look forward to the bright future ahead. I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans."

Anti-Trump protesters descended on state capitols throughout the U.S. in a last-ditch effort to persuade so-called "faithless electors" in states Trump won to change their vote. Many of the Republicans casting ballots said they were inundated with calls and emails urging them to dump Trump.

And some electors did break with how their state voted, albeit in unexpected ways. In Washington, a state Clinton won by 16 points, the former secretary of state received just eight of the state's 12 electoral votes. Colin Powell received three votes and Native American tribal leader Faith Spotted Eagle received one as part of an effort to promote a candidate other than Trump.

An elector in both Maine and Minnesota attempted to cast a ballot for Bernie Sanders, who unsuccessfully challenged Clinton in the Democratic primary. However state laws requiring electors to follow the statewide vote invalidated both efforts.

Only one Republican elector, Christopher Suprun of Texas, publically pledged not to vote for Trump despite his state heavily favoring the president-elect last month. One other Texas elector also abandoned Trump in the final vote.

An Associated Press survey of the electoral college's 538 members found there was little interest from members in breaking from voting how their states did. Thirty-seven electors would have needed to defect from Trump to endanger him from winning.

The Electoral College met in all fifty states and Washington, D.C. on Monday. Congress will certify the results on Jan. 6 and the president will be inaugurated Jan. 20.

Three Nebraska high school students are facing criminal charges after mixing their semen into frosting that was later spread on a turnover that was consumed by their home economics teacher, cops report.

The vile incident occurred Thursday at Westside High School in Omaha and involved a trio of freshmen (ages 14 and 15).

According to police, the suspects excused themselves from a Family and Consumer Science class and went at various times to the bathroom. Cops allege that after masturbating into containers, the boys returned to the classroom.

The suspects then mixed the ejaculate into frosting that they subsequently applied to turnovers that had been baked in class. Investigators say that the teacher consumed part of a tainted turnover as she went through the classroom and sampled her students’s creations.

The 58-year-old teacher later learned of the tainted frosting when another student reported overhearing the suspects discussing their vile plan.

School officials subsequently summoned police, who questioned each suspect (and seized their individual frosting containers).

According to cops, all three boys confessed to planning to mix their bodily fluids into the frosting, which they wanted the victim to taste. While two students reportedly admitted to placing their semen in the frosting, the third suspect claimed not to have followed through with the repulsive plot.

Each student has been charged with a misdemeanor that will be prosecuted in juvenile court. The trio will also face unspecified school disciplinary measures.

In a statement, the local school district said that, “we offer our complete support to the staff member involved,” adding that, “This incident is not indicative of Westside High School or any of our schools, environments that promote respect for all of our staff members and students.”

She was 58. Decide for yourself.

Lawyers for embattled South Korean President Park Geun-hye have struck a defiant note, saying a parliamentary vote to impeach her has no legal basis and should be overturned by the Constitutional Court.

Ms Park was indicted in a December 9 vote by a wider-than-expected 234-56 margin, setting the stage for her to become the country's first democratically elected leader to be ejected from office.

"We see no grounds for impeachment and it should be struck down," Lee Joong-hwan, a former prosecutor who is part of the team representing Ms Park, told reporters gathered at the court building where the fate of her presidency will be decided.

Her lawyers also said it was unlikely Ms Park would appear before the court when it began to hear the case. The court could take up to 180 days to reach a decision.

Ms Park, 64, whose father ruled the country for 18 years after seizing power in a 1961 coup, is accused of colluding with long-time friend Choi Soon-sil, who has been indicted and is in custody, to pressure big businesses to make contributions to non-profit foundations backing presidential initiatives.

About 180 Korean Air pilots will go on a 10-day strike today, calling for a 29 percent wage hike, the Korean Air Pilots Union said Wednesday.

It is the first walkout by the union since December 2005 when Korean Air cancelled more than 1,000 flights and suffered more than 200 billion won ($167 million) in losses in just four days.

The country's largest airliner cancelled 148 flights this time, including 12 cargo flights.

Despite the strike, the company said it will maintain an operation rate of 97 percent for international flights, 90 percent for flights to Jeju and 72 percent for other domestic flights.

Korean Air has halted 24 international flights departing from Incheon International Airport. Their destinations include Narita and Osaka in Japan, Hong Kong, China, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and cities in Saudi Arabia.

Other international flights bound for cities in America, Europe, Oceania and Southeast Asia will operate as usual. The air carrier has also grounded 112 domestic flights connecting airports at Gimhae, Ulsan, Yeosu, Jeju and Gimpo.

According to the company, passengers who booked the cancelled flights will be offered alternative ones or get refunds.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it will send inspectors to Incheon and Gimpo airports to check the company's safety measures, including rest time and pilot's qualifications

Pilots belonging to the union are demanding a 29 percent increase in wages, while the company argued the pilots could not demand more than the 1.9 percent agreement between the company and the general employee union.

"The pilots' demands are nonsense, as Hanjin Group has sustained losses for years," an official of Korean Air complained. "They want an increase which amounts to almost the same as the annual wage of a general employee."
>>
>>93637
Korean Air pilots earn an average of 150 million won in wages.

Rapid growth of Chinese airlines is one of the biggest reasons pilots are demanding higher salaries. As more Chinese airlines need expert pilots, most of them offer about 250 to 350 million won in annual salaries to Korean pilots.

Pilots, however, claim that their strike is due to their disappointment with the company, rather than the wage issue.

"Many pilots are disappointed with the owner family's misconduct," a Korean Air pilot said. "Although Chinese firms offer higher salaries, it is still difficult for most pilots to decide to move to other countries, as they have lived in Korea more than 30 years."

However, critics claimed that most pilots hesitate to leave Korea because Chinese airlines' welfare incentives are poorer than Korean airlines and most pilots who work for Chinese airlines are 3-year contract workers.

Korean Air said the company is still in negotiation with the union and are trying to come to an agreement.

According to Daishin Securities, the strike will cut the company's sales by 4 percent and 10 billion won of operating profits.

All that said, imho if the argument is employee dignity but only the pilots, the highest-paid employees, get higher wages out of this then that's pretty crazy-classist shit.

Though what it looks more like is the pilots, as irreplaceables, are striking basically on behalf of the entire employee base and will be negotiating something along those lines - the crazy wage increase is just the legal on-paper demand before they sit down to talk administrative change (I hope this is the case, at least).

Finance Minister Yoo Il-ho has expressed a strong will to overcome the nation’s economic crisis by bolstering the government’s fiscal roles.

In the economic-related ministers’ meeting on Wednesday, which was the 21st of its kind held since the inauguration of the Park Geun-hye administration in 2013, Yoo said he will pursue more proactive fiscal policies to facilitate an economic recovery.

Yoo assured that the government is doing its best to minimize the administrative vacuum left by the parliamentary passage of the impeachment motion against President Park by swiftly putting in place an emergency intra-ministerial economic response system.

He also urged the public and local companies to continue their economic activities as usual regardless of political uncertainties, and even asked them to consider increasing their investment.

During a meeting with reporters after the ministers’ meeting, Yoo said the government’s active fiscal role will help revitalize the economy, adding the government has a well-drafted plan to frontload the budget next year. He said the government will execute some of the budget quickly in the first half of the year.

Yoo had been preparing to leave office after Park nominated Financial Services Commission(FSC) Chairman Yim Jong-yong to succeed him last month.

However, on Monday Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who now serves as Acting President in the absence of President Park, decided to retain Yoo as Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs.

In a report released on Tuesday, however, Moody’s Investors Service warned that the leadership vacuum will have a negative impact on South Korea’s sovereign credit rating, saying the country will not be capable of implementing new economic policies until its political crisis becomes stabilized.

The global credit appraiser also warned of a further downward revision of South Korean economic growth for next year. The rating agency previously predicted the South Korean economy will grow two-point-seven percent this year, two-point-five percent next year and two percent in 2018.

Moody’s, however, ended the report on a positive note, saying South Korea will be able to overcome its crisis with its institutional and fiscal fundamentals. Moody’s is maintaining South Korea’s rating at Aa2, the third highest rating in its sovereign rating system.

Another global ratings agency Standard and Poor's said Monday that the impeachment of President Park won't impact South Korea's credit rating. S&P's current rating for South Korea is AA.

"There is not one thing in our economy that is not serious," Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol said on Friday. "I believe the focus should be placed on stabilising financial markets and exchange rates and when needed, aggressive responses should be taken."

Outgoing U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has declared his bid for the South Korean presidency, saying he is ready to "sacrifice myself" for the country.

He made the remark during a meeting with Korean correspondents in New York on Tuesday (local time). His term as the world's top diplomat expires on Dec. 31.

"If what I have seen, learned and felt as U.N. Secretary-General would help develop South Korea, I am willing to sacrifice myself to achieve this goal," Ban told Korean correspondents at the U.N. "The public is enraged and frustrated by the lack of good politics. I have gotten personal requests about how to improve society that has exposed accumulated problems. I am in deep agony thinking about how to do my part."

He acknowledged the need for a political alliance in Korea, saying politics is not something he can do by himself.

Referring to the Choi Soon-sil scandal, Ban said it is devastating that what he criticized some foreign leaders for has now happened in Korea.

Ban is expected to meet the acting president, the parliamentary speaker and the chief justice of the Supreme Court when he returns home in early January.

>Breakup with scandalized Park Geun-hye?

Ban openly criticized scandalized President Park Geun-hye in a recent high-profile meeting, arguing she could be blamed for throwing South Korea into its "biggest political turmoil since the Korean War."

This is in stark contrast to the long-circulating rumors that he is backed by Park and her loyalists as the ruling party's candidate for the presidency.

"I believe that during my seven-decades-long life as a South Korean citizen, we have not been experiencing this kind of political turmoil, except when the ... Korean War broke out," Ban said. He made the comment at a discussion organized by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, Saturday.

"The people were very much frustrated and angry about the complete lack of good governance," he said. "And they believed that the trust on and for the leadership of the country was betrayed.

"That's why people became much more frustrated and angry. And I fully understand this situation."

Large numbers of the ruling Saenuri Party, including its former leader Kim Moo-sung, plan to decide by Wednesday whether they will break away from the party.

The move comes after the party's pro-Park faction rejected the non-Park faction's proposal that Representative Yoo Seung-min, a non-Park legislator, be appointed as the party's interim leader.

Spokesman for the Non-Park lawmakers, Hwang Young-cheul, said they cannot wait any longer and that it's time to act.

He said more than 20 lawmakers may leave the party some time this week.

That number is sufficient to form a floor negotiation group and continue to exert influence over legislative matters.

About 40 lawmakers are likely to quit the ruling Saenuri Party this week to form a new conservative bloc following a nasty power struggle with loyalists of President Park Geun-hye.

>Former Chief, Floor Leader Decide to Leave Ruling Party
http://world.kbs.co.kr/english/news/news_Po_detail.htm?No=124071

Former Chairman Kim Moo-sung and former Floor Leader Yoo Seong-min of the Saenuri Party confirmed that they will be defecting from the ruling camp. Their decision to break away from the Saenuri is expected to trigger a mass departure by other lawmakers of the party, hit hard by the political scandal involving the president.
Mina Cha has more.

Report: Former Saenuri Party Chairman Kim Moo-sung and its previous floor leader Yoo Seong-min agreed to finish administrative procedures for their defection by next week.

They are leading the party's lawmakers not aligned with President Park Geun-hye, who is now on the verge of impeachment.

In a phone interview with KBS, Yoo said as many lawmakers as possible should join the first wave of defection.

Other members of the non-mainstream faction, including Rep. Hwang Young-cheul, have also made it official to leave the Saenuri.

“We can’t say precisely how many lawmakers will leave the party, but I am sure it will be 20 or more. We will form a floor negotiation group and take steps to exercise influence at the parliament.”

The pro-Park faction has strongly censured the nonmainstream lawmakers.

Pro-Park heavyweight Rep. Suh Chung-won said those who want to leave the party should go. He added the non-loyalists are behaving as if they had suddenly become fighters.

The pro-Park faction has also launched efforts to stabilize the party in response to potential defections, mentioning the possibility to appoint external figures such as former Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik or former ruling party Chairman Lee Hoi-chang as the party’s interim leader.

With ties already strained as a result of the Choi Soon-sil scandal, the conflict within the ruling party is deepening after the pro-Park faction rejected the non-Park faction's proposal that Rep. Yoo Seong-min be appointed as the party's interim leader.

One of the world's leading industrial powers and America's most important allies no longer has a president in anything but name. And it will be months before a new, effective chief executive is in place in the Republic of Korea.

Today's imbroglio includes alleged undue private influence on the government and political shakedown of corporate chaebols, usual staples of past South Korean scandals. But added are the roles of an old family friend, a discarded tablet computer containing files of presidential documents, and a peculiarly Eastern element of a Shaman and old world spirituality.

President Park Geun-hye's narrow election victory in 2012 seemed to cement conservative control of the national government and led to a steadily tougher policy toward North Korea. Most notable was her closure of the Kaesong industrial park, cutting off nearly $100 million annually in hard currency for Pyongyang.

While her original popularity fade was typical for the South's succession of democratically elected presidents, the ongoing scandal reduced her approval rating to four percent. Mass demonstrations demanded her ouster. Members of her own party joined the overwhelming legislative majority in voting to impeach her.

She now is suspended. The acting president is Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn, who she had planned to replace, but whose successor had not been approved by the National Assembly.

The Constitutional Court must approve her ouster and could take months, four to six, most observers predict, to rule. If she is forced from office, a special election will have to be organized, even though the normal poll is scheduled for December.

However, her removal is by no means certain. Two-thirds of the nine judges must agree, and most of them were appointed by her Saenuri party. If the court fails to affirm her ouster, she will limp on as president until December, vilified by the public, afflicted by continuing demonstrations, and abandoned by her own party.

Whatever the Constitutional Court's decision, Park is political and legal road kill, facing prosecution the moment her presidential immunity expires. Already everyone is looking ahead to her successor. Acting President Hwang will have little authority — and none after the next election, whenever it is held.

Moon Jae-in leads the opposition party, lost narrowly to Park in 2012, and heads opinion surveys. He would seem to have the inside track to the presidency, but Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon has gained attention promoting left-wing causes and attacking Park. Another leftish activist on the rise is Seongnam Mayor Lee Jae-Myeong, who calls himself the ROK's Bernie Sanders. Park's collapse leaves the opposition well-positioned to take control.

However, United Nations Secretary General Bank Ki-moon is likely to seek South Korea's presidency after his term expires at the end of December, as either the ruling party or an independent candidate. Ahn Cheol-soo heads a smaller party. He was a left-leaning contender in 2012 but ended up backing Moon.

Washington officials are less concerned about domestic ROK sensibilities and more worried about policy toward both North Korea and America. Hwang likely will be on auto-pilot, with little impact. Ahn has focused on domestic issues, while Ban's views are not clear, though he is presumed to lean in a more rightward direction.

Moon formally backs the South Korean alliance with America, but he has called for "balanced diplomacy" with the U.S. and China; many opposition activists oppose deployment of the anti-missile THAAD system. Moon also complained that sanctions won't end North Korea's nuclear program. The other potential opposition candidates are thought to generally share this perspective.

In practice, even when strongly critical of the U.S. South Korean leaders tend to reaffirm the trans-pacific military tie. After all, most South Koreans prefer to save money by having Americans pay for their defense.

If development of future policy must necessarily remain in abeyance, maintenance of the peace will remain first priority. The fact that the U.S., in the midst of its own power transition, must worry about the ROK's security is a reminder of the cost of antiquated, even "obsolete," to use the president-elect's term, alliances. Washington remains entangled and at risk.

Park's future matters only to her, but her successor matters to her countrymen — and, ultimately, to Americans. Incoming President Donald Trump should reconsider an alliance which makes the U.S. hostage to a shaman's ministrations in Seoul.
