> Vera Rubin, a pioneering astrophysicist who "proved" the existence of dark matter,

Here we have CNN not quoting anyone that she "proved" dark matter.
This is bs, also called fake news. Nothing and no one has proven anyone's theory. No one has the "answer" necessary to prove they have all other answers.

Even if it were true, it's energy so it gives off energy so to consider it any different than any other matter would be extraneous. They said neutrons were neutral and without charge. Lots of theories and proofs have proved wrong or faked. Merely because someone holds up a page of data doesn't mean it's true. In the end, only the person in front of you gives you their insight, or lack of it.

A greedy dog ruined her family's Christmas after scoffing the turkey intended for their festive dinner.

According to the pet's owner David Barrett, from Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Bubba, 5, a Chi Apso, (a cross between dog breeds Chihuahua and a Lhasa Apso), snuck into the kitchen on Christmas Eve and stole the food, which had been left on the side.

The family had no idea what their hungry pooch had done until she suddenly collapsed bloated on the floor and unable to move.

She had left only a tiny fragment of the turkey breast, which had been supposed to provide enough meat for three people.

Her owner took to Twitter to share the hilarious snap of his pet twice her normal size, which quickly racked up 24,000 likes and nearly 10,000 re-tweets.

'No chance has my dog scranned the whole turkey for tomorrow,' the exasperated owner said before sharing the image.

To prove what Bubba had done he added: 'There's the culprit, she can't move.'

David's followers found the whole saga amusing with one saying: 'She's the same shape as the turkey!'

However, it seems that Christmas wasn't totally ruined as Bubba's owners managed to save the day - and possibly Bubba's life - by getting relatives to bring round spare turkey.

The family say they are now planning to put their dog on a New Year diet.

>and possibly Bubba's life

I thought they were going to say they had saved her life by finding a vet on call or online during xmas after 2 hours of frantic searching because they care so much about her health.

That dog ate enough that she could die or have her lifespan severely reduced from damage to her gis, which will only get worse as that much meat stays in there.

Do dogs not feel the feeling of fullness? Would most dogs really eat until they explode if they could?

>A sad record in 2016: the Amazon rainforest has suffered the largest reported forest loss since 2008. Environmentalists are very concerned about impacts on biodiversity and climate protection

>The rate of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has increased again in 2016, for the fourth consecutive year - loss of rainforest this year has been the greatest since 2008. This according to new data from the Brazilian state environmental research institute INPE.

>Deforestation causes loss of biodiversity and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Brazil is among the largest greenhouse gas emitters in the world and at the same time, the Amazon rainforest is home to 10 percent of the world's known species.

>the rate of Amazon deforestation in 2016 has increased 29 percent compared to 2015 - and this is the greatest reported forest loss since 2008.
>On the bright side: the current deforestation level still represents a reduction of 71 percent compared to 2004.

>Maldonado pointed out that not only governments are responsible - we can all change our consumption behavior, which also has long-term impact.
>The quantity of meat consumed by a single average German citizen, for instance, contributes to the deforestation of around 300 square meters of cerrado plantation in Brazil - since tropical savanna is cleared to grow crops for animal feed.
>"We can all contribute to a zero-deforestation future by changing our consumption patterns," he concluded.

Why don't we just grow animal feed in places besides the rainforest? It can't be that hard and considering how notoriously shitty that land is I would assume it would be a more practical source.

Race is almost always reported in hate crimes because of their very nature. Now you can argue about the selective nature by which the legal system chooses which cases to pursue as hate crimes, but the reporting here is fine for what it is.

>The US has issued a formal request to China to deliver an unmanned underwater drone that was seized in international waters, US officials say.

The Chinese navy seized the US underwater research vessel in the South China Sea on Thursday, the US alleges.

The incident took place just as the USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, was about to retrieve it.

The device, dubbed an "ocean glider", was used to test water salinity and temperature, officials say.

The data was part of an unclassified programme to map underwater channels, Pentagon spokesman Capt Jeff Davis told reporters.
"It was taken" by China, Capt Davis said during a press briefing on Friday.

"The UUV [unmanned underwater vehicle] was lawfully conducting a military survey in the waters of the South China Sea," he added.

"It's a sovereign immune vessel, clearly marked in English not to be removed from the water - that it was US property."

The American press keeps insisting it was a non-military mapping mission but it happened in the South China Sea very close to those islands the Chinese have been coveting lately.

>China stole US underwater drone in South China Sea as Americans watched
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/12/16/china-steals-us-underwater-drone-in-south-china-sea.html

"This is an act of war against the United States," Gordon Chang, analyst and author of "The Coming Collapse of China," told Fox News' "Happening Now." He said the move was an act of war because U.S. military property was stolen.

The Chinese have been regularly shadowing U.S. Navy vessels in the South China Sea for months, Fox News was told. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, reported Wednesday that China apparently set up anti-aircraft guns and close-in weapons systems designed to guard against missile attacks on all seven of its man-made islands in the strategically vital area.

"We call upon China to return our [unmanned underwater vehicle] immediately, and to comply with all of its obligations under international law," Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook responded.

Fox News was told the underwater drone was used to map the sea floor and gather other oceanographic data, and contained no classified material. The USNS Bowditch contained only small arms which were likely stored away on board, a defense official said.

In India, it is expected that the bride’s family organize and especially pay for the wedding, so when a young woman’s father (the main bread earner) dies, she can almost certainly forget about having a wedding, especially if she comes from a poor family. Most often than not, widowed mothers simply don’t have the means to marry their daughters. That’s where Indian real-estate tycoon Mahesh Savani comes in.

Ever since 2008, Mr. Savani has organized weddings for over 700 fatherless brides, not only paying for the event itself, but also giving each one of his new “daughters” a substantial dowry (gold, jewelry, furniture, home appliances, etc.) worth around 400,000 rupees ($5,900). At each wedding, the successful businessman also steps up to play the role of their father and perform their ‘kanyadaan’ – the traditional ritual of giving away the bride. From that moment on, the girls become his daughters.

It all started over 8 years ago, when a close relative died just a week before his daughter’s wedding, and Mahesh Savani stepped in to take his place, organizing the whole event and performing kanyadaan. “That’s when I began to think of all the girls without fathers who needed someone to assume this responsibility and decided I would take this up,” he said ” It is challenging for a woman who has lost her husband to get her daughter married”. All he asks from the brides-to-be is a death certificate of their father, to make sure he is not being taken advantage of. Religion and caste are irrelevant to him.

In the beginning, he used to throw weddings for each individual woman, but as news of his generosity spread around his him state of Gujarat, it got to a point where he couldn’t keep up with requests from young women and widowed mothers begging him to help them.

It simply became to tiring for him, so ever since 2012 he started holding one mass wedding every December, on the grounds of the PP Savani School which he runs in the city of Surat.

Up until this year, Mahesh Savani had married off a total of 472 fatherless brides of various religions. At last year’s mass wedding, he paid for the food and drinks of 100,000 people – the couples, their families and their friends, not to mention the gifts he gave every one of his new daughters.

This year’s event, was a special one. Not only did he get the chance to marry off 236 fatherless women, but his two biological sons also got married at the ceremony. “With Sunday’s mass wedding, I have become (a) proud father to have performed ‘kanyadaan’ of over 700 girls,” Mahesh told AFP. “This year my two sons also got married during the mass wedding event. So, in all there were 238 marriages.”

Savani never discloses how much these grand wedding cost, but judging only by the value of the dowry and the elaborate gowns worn by the brides, it’s estimated that he spends hundreds of thousands of dollars for each event. He can afford to pay for them thanks to the fortune he has amassed, first from his diamond polishing business, and more recently from real-estate. But just because he can afford to do it, doesn’t make his generosity any less impressive.

Another thing that makes Mahesh Savani special is the relationship he has with the brides after their weddings. “Once we become his daughters, we are daughters for life. At every festival when a father is meant to go to his married daughter’s house with gifts, Mahesh Papa goes to as many homes as he can,” says Vishva Vamja, one of the beneficiaries of Savani’s generosity. “He treats his responsibility as one that’s forever, not something that ends when the wedding is over.”
>>
“Mahesh Papa is just a message away when we need him,” says Hina Kathiriya, another one of Savani’s adopted daughters.

Every Sunday, it is open house at the Savani home, a day when every one of Mahesh’s daughters can come by simply to keep in touch or to ask him for help with a problem. On Father’s day, dozens of them turn up every year bearing gifts and cards expressing their love for him and their gratitude. Each year’s wedding is also an opportunity for the earlier brides and Mr. Savani to bond. “I get all the earlier brides and their husbands to help with the arrangements. The married girls go and do all the shopping for the new brides,” he says.

Savani claims that being able to make so many women happy is a blessing from God. “The best thing is seeing the relief on the mother’s and daughter’s faces the moment they hear I’ll take care of everything. That, and the girl’s happiness on the big day,” he said.

He plans to hold his now traditional annual mass wedding for fatherless girls for as long as he can afford it.

Ok, maybe that's comparable saying "fire" (literally?) in a theatre, but 1. the automatic software update for the Note 7 prevents the battery from charging all the way, i.e. to the critical level; 2. it also caused all Note 7s to shut down completely after a certain date like last month; 3. the Note 7 overheats to cause a small fire that can be extinguished easily -- it's not like it's a bomb.

All that plus every phone's default hotspot has a unique id code after the phone name should mean an obvious troll to anyone who also has a phone and knows what a wifi hotspot is. But no, people have to go and be idiots.

>TAMPA (CBSMiami) — A Tampa woman has been arrested for threatening the parent of a child killed in the Newton, Connecticut elementary school shooting.

>Lucy Richards, 57, was indicted Monday on four counts of threats in interstate commerce against Len Pozner, according to The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida.

>“We are comforted to know that the system is working to protect the victims of violent crime from re-victimization by potentially violent Hoaxers,” said Pozner in a statement to the media.

>Pozner’s 6-year-old son Noah was one of 20 first graders and 6 adults killed in the Sandy Hook School shooting on Dec. 4, 2012.

>Richards believed the event didn’t happen, the FBI said, which motivated her to make a series of death threats against the victim.

>She called Pozner on the phone saying, “you gonna die, death is coming to you real soon,” a federal indictment said, as well as “death is coming to you real soon and there’s nothing you can do about it.”

>Q: It is reported that on December 11, US President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview that he fully understands the one China policy, but knows not why they have to be bound by it unless they make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade. What is your response to that?

>A: We have seen the relevant report, and we are seriously concerned about his words. The Taiwan question bears on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and touches our core interests. Adherence to the one China principle serves as the political foundation for the development of China-US ties. If this foundation is wobbled and weakened, then there is no possibility for the two countries to grow their relations in a sound and steady way and cooperate on key areas. We urge the new US administration and leadership to be fully aware of the high sensitivity of the Taiwan question, stick to the one China policy and the principles of the three joint communiqués, and approach Taiwan-related issues with prudence so as to avoid any serious disruption and harm to the overall interests of the China-US relationship.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/world/asia/taiwan-nazi-hitler-parade.html

>TAIPEI, Taiwan — A high school parade in Taiwan in which students dressed as Nazi soldiers and carried swastika banners has created a storm of criticism in one of Asia’s most open societies.

>Hsinchu Kuang-Fu High School in Hsinchu City held the parade, which focused on Adolf Hitler, as part of the school’s anniversary celebrations on Friday. The parade also featured cardboard tanks. The students chose the theme, according to local news reports.

>Photographs of the event spread quickly online, creating a backlash, with the unofficial diplomatic missions of Israel and Germany issuing letters of protest.

>The episode resulted in the resignation of the school’s principal, Cheng Hsiao-ming, this week.

>Mr. Cheng said that he took responsibility, adding that the primary issue was “our education’s problem,” according to local news reports. “It wasn’t necessarily a problem created by the children.”

>Taiwanese textbooks, like those in other Asian countries, focus on fighting in Asia during World War II, resulting in lower awareness of events in Europe.

>In addition to the Israeli and German missions’ responses, the Chabad Taipei Jewish Center also issued a statement expressing regret about “the use of Nazi imagery and logos by students in Taiwan, as it reopens historical wounds suffered by the Jewish people.”

>Ross Feingold, chairman of the center, said that many people in Taiwan were unaware that there were more than 1,000 Jews living among them, many of them long-term residents with businesses or investments on the island.

>“Certainly it’s not meant to be an act of anti-Semitism,” Mr. Feingold said. “Holocaust education is extremely limited here.”

>The parade in Hsinchu is not the first incident in which Nazi references have offended Jews and other groups in Taiwan.

>In 1999, an advertisement for German-manufactured DBK space heaters in Taiwan featured a smiling Hitler with the caption, “Declare war on the cold front!” The next year, a restaurant with a concentration camp theme opened, closing weeks after it became a source of outrage.

>In 2001, the governing Democratic Progressive Party created a television advertisement contrasting Hitler with John F. Kennedy and other leaders, which the party modified after protests from the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei and others.

>Officials at the school, which is private but receives subsidies from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, have said they will show their students movies such as “Schindler’s List” to better educate them on the atrocities of the Holocaust.

>“A one-off showing of a movie is not a sustainable program,” Mr. Feingold said. “What is more sustainable is reaching out to the Jewish community that lives here in Taiwan, many of whom have relatives who died in or survived the Holocaust.”

Also, google-image "taiwan hitler ad" or anything similar with Asian countries gives you some great shit. And while one can argue that maybe it's a bit Eurocentric to immediately put the genocide of one group that makes up statistically 0% of Taiwan's population as important for them to study as that of another group that is 99% (the Chinese, non-systematically but by numbers comparably, by the Japanese), you don't see kids in the West putting on pageants or ads giving a neutral-point-of-view look at the Cultural Revolution, or of the uniforms and command structure used by USSR's invasion of Finland or Afghanistan (though in fairness you probably do see some American el-hi schools doing a kind of near-apologist shit for Vietnam, and France worships DeGaulle who killed even more than we did there), Also the UK worships Churchill who was involved in an ethnic massacre or two himself prior to ww2. And while Western education skips over a lot of Genocides around the modern world, we learn that when when we learn of one we should take it seriously -- the whole "never again" thing.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/nov/18/teenage-girls-wish-for-preservation-after-death-agreed-to-by-court

>A 14-year-old girl who said before dying of cancer that she wanted a chance to live longer has been allowed by the high court to have her body cryogenically frozen in the hope that she can be brought back to life at a later time.

>The court ruled that the teenager’s mother, who supported the girl’s wish to be cryogenically preserved, should be the only person allowed to make decisions about the disposal of her body. Her estranged father had initially opposed her wishes.

>During the last months of her life, the teenager, who had a rare form of cancer, used the internet to investigate cryonics. Known only as JS, she sent a letter to the court: “I have been asked to explain why I want this unusual thing done. I’m only 14 years old and I don’t want to die, but I know I am going to. I think being cryo‐preserved gives me a chance to be cured and woken up, even in hundreds of years’ time.

>“I don’t want to be buried underground. I want to live and live longer and I think that in the future they might find a cure for my cancer and wake me up. I want to have this chance. This is my wish.”

>Following the ruling, in a case described by the judge as exceptional, the body of JS has now been preserved and transported from where she lived in London to the US, where it has been frozen “in perpetuity” by a commercial company at a cost of £37,000.

The hope is that far in the future, science will be able to fix that. It's been going on for 30 years or so. Nobody remembers what happened to the baseball player Ted Williams though. (cryogenic techs were playing floor hockey with his frozen head).

President-elect Donald Trump’s secretary of state nominee will not be required to fork over his tax returns to the Senate prior to nomination hearings.

>ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson will not have to submit three years’ worth of tax returns, Republican Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said in a press statement Thursday. Corker’s decision comes over Democratic senators’ demands for just such a disclosure.

>“He already has submitted a completed nominee questionnaire and will soon submit an extensive financial disclosure,” the Tennessee Republican said. “

>Furthermore, prior to his confirmation hearing, he will go through the same ethics and FBI checks as previous Secretary of State nominees.”

>Corker, who heads the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also said that it was a “long-standing precedent” to not ask secretary of state nominees for their tax returns.

>Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and John McCain of Arizona are a little more skeptical and have called for thorough confirmation hearing process to assure there are no conflicts of interests.

>Democrats meanwhile believe that Tillerson’s past business dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, along with his financial connections with various international businesses, require the Senate to treat the Exxon head’s nomination differently.

>“Mr. Tillerson was actively engaged with many foreign governments that could become relevant if confirmed as Secretary of State,” Democratic Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin, the ranking member of on the committee wrote in a letter requesting the submission. “The Senate has a responsibility to review all relevant documents during the confirmation process.”
