The nut rage incident, also referred to as nutgate or nut return (Korean: 땅콩 회항, Ttangkong hoehang), occurred on December 5, 2014, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, when Korean Air vice president Heather Cho, having been dissatisfied with the way a flight attendant served her nuts on the plane, ordered the aircraft to taxi back to the airport's gate before takeoff.

First-class passengers, including Cho, were given nuts bagged in their original packaging (in conformity with the airline's procedures); Cho had expected them to be served on a plate in first class. Cho questioned the cabin crew chief about the standard procedure of serving the nuts. After a heated confrontation during which Cho assaulted him, Cho ordered him off the plane, requiring a return to the gate and delaying the flight by about 20 minutes. When the incident became public, Cho and Korean Air were heavily criticized, and in the aftermath, Cho resigned from one of her several executive positions at Korean Air. She was subsequently found guilty in Korean court of obstructing aviation safety and given a twelve-month prison sentence. The video clip of an in-flight drunken rampage involving a South Korean "psycho" passenger and popular U.S. musician Richard Marx went viral on Wednesday, unleashing a wave of criticism of the unruly passenger and curiosity about the man's identity

And pieces of the man's personal profile were put together in just hours thanks to the extensive searches of Internet-savvy Koreans and information leaked from police

The passenger was confirmed as the son of a Seoul-based trading company's chairman, surnamed Im. He was born in 1982 and graduated from Seoul's Lila Elementary School. The university he graduated from is unknown, but after graduation he worked for Samsung Electronics and recently joined his father's company

He committed the rampage after drinking two cups of whisky on board the flight. According to police, it was not the first time Im had become violent on a plane. He made similar in-flight trouble in September, police said

The rampage rekindled 2006 reports that shed light on the trading company's alleged poor working conditions, exploitation of employees and corruption

One of those posts from 2006 read: "You will experience how human beings turn into working robots. We (workers) don't have weekends or holidays

"The problem is, we don't receive any extra pay for overtime. Executives who control the company are corrupted as well." It went on: "Everyone leaves the company in less than a year."

Im's father said his son was returning from a business trip to Vietnam when the incident happened. He said he would ensure his son's wrongdoings were properly investigated

Im was arrested on arrival at Incheon International Airport on Tuesday, but was sent home because he was too drunk to be questioned

"Im went home with his guardian," police said. "But we will summon him for questioning later."

Popular U.S. rock musician Richard Marx has lashed out at Korean Air for its "ill-equipped" response to an unruly passenger on a plane he was aboard.

He said Korea's flagship airline should be "sanctioned" because crew members were unable to subdue a "psycho" without the help of passengers.

The musician revealed the in-flight trouble on KE480 and the alleged ineptitude of crew members on Tuesday through a Facebook posting and six attached photos.

Calling the crew "ill equipped," Marx posted pictures and video of the disturbance on the flight from Hanoi, Vietnam, to Incheon, South Korea.

"All the female crew were clueless and not trained as to how to restrain the psycho … and was only subdued when I and a couple of other male passengers intervened," Marx posted. "Korean Air should be sanctioned for not knowing how to handle a situation like this without passenger interference."

He said the chaotic event continued for four hours and the situation peaked when one of the stewardesses had to point a Taser at the passenger to restrain him.

"This went on for FOUR (hours)," wrote Daisy Fuentes, Marx's wife. "I feel horrible for the abuse the staff had to endure but no one was prepared for this. They never fully got control of him."

The passenger was restrained during the flight but broke free and resumed his attack because the restraints were not securely fastened, Marx said.

Korean Air said there was nothing wrong with the crew members' response.

"We played by the rule," the company said. "According to the response protocol, Korean Air's flight attendants have subdued the unruly passenger and tied him up with ropes. The passenger was turned over to the police upon arrival at Incheon Airport."
