>The CIA has concluded in a secret assessment that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help Donald Trump win the presidency, rather than just to undermine confidence in the U.S. electoral system, according to officials briefed on the matter.

>Intelligence agencies have identified individuals with connections to the Russian government who provided WikiLeaks with thousands of hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee and others, including Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, according to U.S. officials. Those officials described the individuals as actors known to the intelligence community and part of a wider Russian operation to boost Trump and hurt Clinton’s chances.

>“It is the assessment of the intelligence community that Russia’s goal here was to favor one candidate over the other, to help Trump get elected,” said a senior U.S. official briefed on an intelligence presentation made to U.S. senators. “That’s the consensus view.”

s item on social media had pegged as the center of a child-abuse ring run by Hillary Clinton and her campaign headJohn Podesta, despite a lack of any evidence.

Following that report, Reddit took steps to shut down the "r/Pizzagate" subreddit community, which had the stated goal ofproving the existence of a conspiracy centering on Comet Ping Pong. "We don’t wantwitchhunts on our site," says the warning that replaced the Pizzagate page on Reddit.

The move to shut down r/Pizzagate proved controversial to users of "r/The_Donald," Reddit's most popular community for supporters of Donald Trump. Those users repeatedly left comments to the effect of "f**k u/spez" and other forms of abuse, including Huffman's "u/spez" Reddit namein the post to make sure he was notified of each new message.

On Wednesday afternoon, members of "The_Donald" noticed that their posts had changed without their knowledge or consent: Instead of referencing Huffman himself, the posts now hurled the same expletives at the moderators of the "The_Donald" community.

Angry "The _Donald" members accused Reddit leadership of modifying or otherwise censoring their posts — which turned out to be correct, when Huffman posted the following comment, confessing that it was him personally who was performing the changes (with expletives taken out):

"Hey Everyone,

Yep. I messed with the “f**ku/spez” comments, replacing "spez" withr/the_donaldmods for about an hour. It’s been a long week here trying to unwind ther/pizzagatestuff. As much as we try to maintain a good relationship with you all, it does get old getting called a pedophile constantly. As the CEO, I shouldn’t play such games, and it’s all fixed now. >Large numbers of protester have taken to the streets marking Friday’s suspension of Park’s presidential powers with music, chanting and fireworks

Angry protests against the South Korean president, Park Geun-hye, have turned into celebrations following her impeachment, with thousands braving freezing temperatures over the weekend to declare a victory for people power.

Large numbers of protesters returned to the streets of Seoul on Saturday, marking Friday’s suspension of Park’s presidential powers with candlelit vigils, music, chanting and impromptu firework displays.

Some among a crowd organisers estimated at 500,000 played drums and gongs, while other held up an effigy of park dressed in a prison uniform.

Despite the festive mood, people who had gathered just outside the presidential Blue House made it clear they were still not satisfied, calling on Park to resign immediately rather than await a ruling on the legitimacy of her impeachment by the constitutional court.

After MPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of impeachment, Park said she would wait for the court’s nine judges to confirm whether or not the move was valid – a process that could take up to six months.

But at the weekend, protesters demanded that Park vacate the Blue House, where she is expected to remain, shorn of her powers and shunned by much of her own party, while the judges consider their verdict.

She may have been able to hear crowds outside chanting: “Park Geun-hye, get out of the house!” and “Come down and go to jail!”

Kim Hye-in, a demonstrator who was attending her sixth anti-Park demonstration, said impeachment was just a first step. “It was a day when we all realised how strong we can be collectively,” Kim said. “But we aren’t there just yet. We need to keep gathering strength and protest until the court officially removes her from office.”

Kim In-sook, a café owner, handed out free coffee to protesters. “I am giving away coffee to celebrate Park’s impeachment and to call for her arrest,” Yonhap quoted Kim as a saying. “I want to share in the people’s joy.”

Park has denied any legal wrongdoing in a corruption and cronyism scandal that has left her fighting for her political life, four years after she became South Korea’s first female president.

She is accused of helping her longtime friend, Choi Soon-sil, coerce South Korean companies into handing over tens of millions of dollars in donations to foundations run by Choi.

Choi faces embezzlement charges while Park, who has been named as a formal suspect, has apologised for her “naivety” but denied seeking any personal gain. Park’s lawyer described as groundless prosecutors’ allegations that she was “collusively involved” in Choi’s alleged activities.

Moments after she was impeached, Park apologised for her “lack of virtue” and the turmoil her relationship with Choi has caused, but resisted calls to step down. Her powers have been temporarily transferred to the country’s prime minister, Hwang Kyo-ahn.
>>

Analysts believe Park is reluctant to resign because scandal-hit South Korean presidents who leave office before their single, five-year term has ended leave themselves open to criminal charges.

Park’s impeachment has prompted talk of a resurrection of popular resistance in South Korea, three decades after huge demonstrations led to the introduction of free and fair elections.

“We accomplished a peaceful revolution,” said Park Seong-su, a frequent anti-Park protester. “For long, people were told by politicians what to do, but on Friday, it was the will of people that forced politicians what to do.”

The overwhelming vote in favour of impeachment, with opposition MPs joined by scores of lawmakers from Park’s Saenuri party, came after several consecutive weekends of protests with a combined attendance running into the millions.

Park will be removed from office if at least six of the constitutional court’s nine justices support her impeachment, with a presidential election held within 60 days. But if at least six judges are opposed, Park’s presidential powers will be restored and she could limp on until the end of her term in February 2018.

There have been warnings that failure to uphold the impeachment vote would be a betrayal of the South Korean people and could lead to civil unrest. “Then the candles will turn into torches,” said protester Kim Hyeong-seok.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/06/world/europe/roman-polanski-extradition-poland.html

>WARSAW — The Polish Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a government request to extradite Roman Polanski, an Oscar-winning filmmaker, to the United States over a decades-old conviction for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

>The decision almost certainly ends the legal battle in Poland over how to deal with Mr. Polanski, although as a practical matter, even a ruling in favor of the government would have had little effect. Mr. Polanski, a dual citizen of France and Poland, lives in France, which does not extradite its citizens.

>Judge Michal Laskowski ruled that a lower court’s verdict was not a “flagrant violation of the law,” as the request for an appeal had claimed. “The regional court of Krakow considered and verified all evidence exceptionally carefully,” Judge Laskowski said.

>The legal effort reflects a broader push by the conservative Law and Justice government, which has been calling since coming to power a year ago for a return to Roman Catholic values in Poland, to try to reinforce its reputation as a law-and-order party.

>The ruling on Tuesday came six months after the chief prosecutor and justice minister, Zbigniew Ziobro, asked the court to overrule the earlier verdict as the government sought the extradition of Mr. Polanski, whom the authorities in the United States have wanted for decades.

>A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice issued a statement that said Mr. Ziobro “accepts and respects” the decision of the Supreme Court, although he still “takes the position that proceedings concerning sexual abuse of minors should be enforced consistently regardless of who and when committed the crime.”

>Mr. Polanski was first arrested in 1977 on charges that included the rape of the 13-year-old girl at the home of the actor Jack Nicholson. In 1978, he left the United States on the eve of sentencing under an agreement by which he was to plead guilty to a count of statutory rape.

>In October 2015, a judge in Krakow, Poland, ruled that turning over Mr. Polanski would be an “obviously unlawful” deprivation of liberty, saying that the state of California, where he was convicted, was unlikely to conduct a fair trial and provide humane conditions of confinement for the director, who was 82 at the time.

>The Krakow prosecutor’s office, which had sought Mr. Polanski’s extradition on behalf of Los Angeles County, said a month later that it would abide by the judge’s ruling.

>But Mr. Ziobro appealed the decision to the Supreme Court at the end of May, calling the trial judge’s ruling “incomprehensible” and a “serious breach” of the extradition agreement between Poland and the United States.

>Mr. Ziobro said in an interview with Polish state radio in May that Mr. Polanski had received preferential treatment because of his fame.

>“If he was just a regular guy, a teacher, doctor, plumber, decorator, then I’m confident that he’d have been deported from any country to the U.S. a long time ago,” he said.

>In his opening statement on Tuesday, Jan Olszewski, a lawyer for Mr. Polanski, recalled how the Swiss authorities had declined in 2010 to extradite the director of “Chinatown” because of doubts over the conduct of the judge in his original trial.

>Jerzy Stachowicz, another lawyer for Mr. Polanski, argued in court that his client had not technically fled the United States because he had never been prohibited from leaving.

>“Mr. Polanski didn’t flee, as it is believed,” Mr. Stachowicz said. “He simply bought a plane ticket, checked in his luggage and boarded a plane. It was not fleeing.”

...
>>
>Referring to Mr. Ziobro’s argument, Mr. Stachowicz contended, “If Mr. Polanski were not a celebrity, a famous filmmaker, but he was an average Joe, this case would have been over long ago, and nobody would have ever heard of it.”

>The Supreme Court ruling means that Mr. Polanski, now 83, would be free to work in Poland. He is directing a film about Alfred Dreyfus, a French Jew who was wrongly accused of spying and whose case raised a debate in the late 19th century about prosecutorial misconduct.

>The film, “The Dreyfus Affair,” was initially to be shot in Poland, but it was announced in June that Mr. Polanski had decided to make it in France.

>That prompted speculation that his legal problems had led him to move production of the film, but Robert Benmussa, the producer of the movie, attributed the decision to French tax incentives, according to The Los Angeles Times.

>Mr. Polanski, who lives with his wife in France, was not present in court on Tuesday.

>“This is just too emotional for him,” Mr. Stachowicz, said by telephone on Monday, before the ruling. “This has been going on for such a long time. A ruling against overruling the first verdict would be a great relief for him.”

>After the ruling was announced, Mr. Olszewski, the lawyer, said he had spoken with Mr. Polanski on the phone. “ He is currently in France, where he is shooting his new film,” Mr. Olszewski said. “He is beyond happy that this is finally over. At least in Poland.”

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/12/09/us/politics/ap-us-gunman-pizza-shop-conspiracy-theories.html

>WASHINGTON (AP)— For conspiracy theorists, the bizarre rumors of "pizzagate" didn't end when a man brought a gun to a Washington restaurant this week in a misguided attempt to rescue nonexistent child sex slaves. Instead, the shooting sparked discussion that the conspiracy runs deeper.

>On blogs, YouTube channels and internet radio shows devoted to conspiracy theories, the arrest of Edgar Maddison Welch on Sunday was just the latest "false flag," a term for a cover-up or distraction orchestrated by the government or other powerful figures. The persistent belief in the false-flag theory shows just how stubborn fabricated conspiracies can be, according to experts.

>According to police, Welch drove to a restaurant called Comet Ping Pong to investigate the "pizzagate" rumors that Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta, and other Washington insiders were harboring child sex slaves there. Police said Welch fired several shots inside the pizzeria on Sunday with a military-style rifle but surrendered peacefully after he found no evidence of a secret pedophilia ring.

>There's no evidence to back up the rumors about the restaurant, a beloved neighborhood institution in the wealthy enclave of Chevy Chase. In the past year, Comet employees have reported a damaged car, a stolen bag and online harassment; otherwise, it's never been the subject of a police investigation.

>But to true believers, the absence of proof is just another sign of a conspiracy and a well-orchestrated cover-up.

>James Fetzer, a longtime conspiracy theorist who also believes the Sandy Hook school shooting was a hoax, told The Associated Press that Welch's visit to the pizzeria was staged to distract the public from the truth of the "pizzagate" allegations.

...
18 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>"There's no doubt about it in my mind," said Fetzer, a former philosophy professor and the founder of a group called Scholars for 9/11 Truth. "You see, this is part of the whole idea to smear the alternative media, which are putting out so much more truth than the mainstream."

>Welch — a fitfully employed, 28-year-old father of two from North Carolina — is being held without bail. He told The New York Times in a jailhouse interview that he "just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way."

>Once a conspiracy theory gains traction, confronting true believers with facts is pointless, said Michael Barkun, a professor emeritus at Syracuse University's Maxwell School and the author of "A Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America."

>"When you get to conspiracy theories like this, they're closed systems of ideas," Barkun said. "They're constructed in such a way that there isn't any evidence you can present to someone who believes them that will lead a believer to change his or her mind."

>"Pizzagate" believers point out references to pizza in Podesta's hacked emails, which were published by WikiLeaks, and Comet owner James Alefantis' ties to Democratic donors. They scour Alefantis' social-media posts and even his restaurant's menu for "code words" and "symbols" that supposedly reference child sexual abuse. They jump to incredible conclusions based on Podesta's and Alefantis' tastes in art.

>Fetzer and other conspiracy theorists seized on the fact that Welch had dabbled in movie acting as a giveaway that his visit to the restaurant was staged. Welch wrote a short film and appeared as a victim in a slasher movie alongside a friend, Kathy Sue Holtorf, who told the AP that Welch "never wanted to become an actor."

>Blogger Joachim Hagopian, a false-flag proponent, told the AP that conspirators look for "a patsy or stooge" to pose as a lone gunman with an assault rifle. Welch "fits the pattern" with his acting background.
...
>>
>"He's got an IMDB (Internet Movie Database) profile," Hagopian said.

>Conspiracy theorists have made similar claims about parents of the 20 children who were killed at Sandy Hook in Newtown Connecticut, in 2012, calling them "crisis actors" pretending to grieve for nonexistent children. Sandy Hook was a false flag meant to promote gun control, the conspiracy theorists said. Just this week, a Florida woman was charged with threatening the parent of a child who died in the shooting because she thought the attack was a hoax, according to federal authorities.

>The ultimate false flag in modern times, according to conspiracy theorists, was Sept. 11, 2001. Some believe the World Trade Center towers were destroyed by the government, using bombs or other means, as part of a plot to justify the subsequent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

>Hagopian said he believes attacks since then — including the mass shootings last year in San Bernardino, California, and this year at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida — also were false flags.

>Hillary Clinton has been linked by conspiracy theorists to child sex abuse since the mid-1990s, Barkun said. Andrew Breitbart, the late founder of right-wing site Breitbart News — later led by President-elect Donald Trump's chief strategist, Stephen Bannon — tweeted in 2011 that Podesta was a "world class underage sex slave op cover-upper."

>Radio host and Trump supporter Alex Jones, a well-known conspiracy theorist, said in a YouTube video Sunday that he believes the claims about powerful Democrats abusing children, but he wasn't convinced Comet Ping Pong had anything to do with it.
...
>>
>"The big bug zapper to distract all the investigators is the D.C. pizza place," Jones said.

>The video was deluged by comments criticizing Jones for backing away from the "pizzagate" story.

>Conspiracy theories can help believers process genuinely horrific news, such as child sex abuse scandals involving the Catholic Church or Penn State University, said James Broderick, an English professor at New Jersey City University and the co-author of "Web of Conspiracy: A Guide to Conspiracy Theory Sites on the Internet."

>"Having a targeted source of villainy creates, in some people's minds, a feeling of control," Broderick said. "Evil isn't random. It's a result of these nameable forces that we can target."

Sometime between 600 and 450 B.C.E., a high-status individual in what is today Germany developed some disturbing symptoms: large bruises, bleeding from the nose and gums, and bloody diarrhea and urine. His fellow villagers, shocked—or perhaps intrigued—by his condition, stored his blood and organs in pottery vessels after he died, and interred them in a burial mound. Now, using a novel technique based on analyzing ancient proteins, archaeologists have reconstructed the contents of these vessels to conclude that the individual likely died from Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a severe tick-borne disease that still kills people across the world today.

"This is the first identification of CCHFV or any hemorrhagic fever virus in the archaeological record," says Conner Wiktorowicz, the study's lead researcher and a Ph.D. candidate in archaeology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. It’s also the only known example of human blood and organs being buried in pottery vessels during this time in this region, raising the question of whether this was a more widespread practice, previously unknown to archaeologists.

The contents of ceramic vessels decay over time, leaving a film of residue containing proteins from any organic matter stored within. Archaeologists are exploring new ways to recover and analyze these proteins. In the new study, a team led by Wiktorowicz ground up a small portion of each of the pottery fragments (or sherds), used detergent and other chemicals to dislodge any proteins stuck to them, and isolated and analyzed the protein fragments using various techniques. The team then fed this information into a national protein database.

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/12/human-blood-organs-and-surprising-virus-detected-ancient-pottery
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
The researchers identified proteins specific to human blood and organs, which was a surprise, and showed that the vessels once held organ remains. Just as shocking was the presence of two unique protein fragments, known as peptides, that help CCHFV bind to a host cell just prior to infection, the team will report in the February 2017 issue of The Journal of Archaeological Science.

The find highlights how ancient viruses can more easily be identified by their proteins than their more commonly studied nucleic acids, such as DNA or RNA. Although researchers have used DNA to trace the prehistory of pathogens such as smallpox, proteins are more stable than nucleic acids and potentially could be preserved for millions of years.

"Recovering nucleic acids from ancient viruses is extremely difficult and plagued by contamination,” notes Angelique Corthals, a forensic anthropologist at the City University of New York in New York City, who was not involved in the study. "Virus proteins are more readily accessible and less prone to degradation."

"The discovery of proteins for CCHFV in the pottery sherds is very exciting,” Corthals says. "It would be nice to see confirmation by another independent laboratory. But as it is, the results seem pretty convincing."

The question remains as to whether the presence of CCHFV in Iron Age Germany represents evidence of an ancient epidemic, shows that the pathogen was endemic to the region, or traces the path of an individual who traveled from an infected area, Corthals says.

The findings could make archaeologists pay more attention to featureless pottery sherds, or those found moved from where they had been placed or discarded in antiquity, Wiktorowicz says. "What have archaeologists been missing regarding social practices and the use of pottery vessels in the past?" he says. “I can’t imagine all of the exciting new findings other researchers will make."

"If the German media are accusing Russia of "war crimes" for action in Syria, they should respond to an airstrike of the U.S. air force on civilians in Mosul, which killed 90 people." Said the official representative of the MFA of Russia Maria Zakharova.

In Iraq's Mosul as a result of erroneous air strikes by U.S. forces killed about 90 people, with another 100 injured.

Also suffered equipment of the Iraqi army, writes "the Newspaper.ru" with reference to the portal "Factiniraq". It is reported that the military had to retreat from the area in which they were located.

In the operation to liberate Mosul from the grouping "Islamic state" (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) involved the Iraqi military, Kurdish forces, militia and air force of the international coalition headed by the USA. Operation continues on October 17.

>VELES, Macedonia — Dimitri points to a picture on his Instagram showing a bar table decked with expensive champagne and sparklers.

>It's from his 18th birthday just four months ago — a lavish party in his east European hometown that he says wouldn't have been possible without President-elect Donald Trump.

>Dimitri — who asked NBC News not to use his real name — is one of dozens of teenagers in the Macedonian town of Veles who got rich during the U.S. presidential election producing fake news for millions on social media.

>The articles, sensationalist and often baseless, were posted to Facebook, drawing in armies of readers and earning fake-news writers money from penny-per-click advertising.

>Dimitri says he's earned at least $60,000 in the past six months — far outstripping his parents' income and transforming his prospects in a town where the average annual wage is $4,800. He is one of the more successful fake news pushers in the area.

>His main source of cash? Supporters of America's president-elect.

>"Nothing can beat Trump's supporters when it comes to social media engagement," he says. "So that's why we stick with Trump."

>Even with the presidential contest over and Google and Facebook's plans to crack down on fake news makers, money continues to pour in.

>Posts about Hillary Clinton are also a hit — but only negative ones.

>"I have mostly written about her emails, what is contained in her emails, the Benghazi tragedy, maybe her illness that she had," Dimitri adds, but now he's moved on to headlines like: "Trey Gowdy Revealed His EPIC Plan To Imprison Hillary Now That Election's Over, SHE IS DONE!"

>Dimitri's sole aim is to make his stories go viral.

>His most popular headlines during the election included: "JUST IN: Obama Illegally Transferred DOJ Money To Clinton Campaign!" and "BREAKING: Obama Confirms Refusal To Leave White House, He Will Stay In Power!"

>The teenager is unrepentant about any influence his stories may have had on swaying public opinion.

>"I didn't force anyone to give me money," he says. "People sell cigarettes, they sell alcohol. That's not illegal, why is my business illegal? If you sell cigarettes, cigarettes kill people. I didn't kill anyone."

>The same weekend that NBC spent with Dimitri, a gunman opened fire in a Washington, D.C., pizzeria. The shooter told police he was motivated by a fake news story. The pizzeria, Comet Ping Pong, was accused online of hosting a pedophile ring run by Democratic leaders.

>Asked about the incident this week, Dimitri claimed he wasn't familiar with the story nor the people who had spread it online.

>The small, rust-belt town of Veles has found itself in the international spotlight after investigations by BuzzFeed and the Guardian traced more than 100 fake news domain names here.

>The fake news bonanza couldn't have come against a more jarring backdrop.

>Once part of communist Yugoslavia, the Republic of Macedonia has a population of 2.1 million in a landlocked area about the size Vermont. Blanketed by rugged mountains, parts of the country have enjoyed a tourism surge in recent years.

>But vacationers won't find Veles in many travel guides. The town of 50,000 is almost an hour's drive down a lonely, crumbling highway from the capital, Skopje.

>Visitors are greeted by a distressed mosaic of red-roofed buildings, densely stacked onto a steep mountainside. Industrial smokestacks add to a wintry fog settling over the valley — though even their output has diminished after several recent factory closures.

>Almost a quarter of Macedonians are currently unemployed — a rate around five times higher than in the U.S.

>But the burdens that weigh on Veles might also explain why it's become a global hotbed for fake news.

>High unemployment and a close-knit community meant that when Dimitri and others started making money, word quickly spread and everyone wanted a piece of the action.

>Most teens here speak fluent English, allowing them to quickly navigate through reams of Western news sites and pinpoint potentially viral content.

>Dimitri estimates there are now 300 locals dabbling in fake news, with at least 50 making "decent money," and around a dozen making "a lot." He says he's not quite at the top of the pecking order, but not far off.
...
>>
>But he is no scrappy teenager. Dimitri is bright, with an obvious aptitude for business.

>He won't show NBC News his profile on Google AdSense, an online advertising service that allows websites to make money, to protect five other teenagers who asked him not to reveal aspects of their shared interests. He's also wary of revealing his full income, worried it will make him a target for thieves, or worse.

>However, he does show NBC News a digital receipt from Google showing he earned more than $8,000 from the web giant in September. He says this was just one of several advertising accounts, and claims his most successful streak — in the run-up to the election — saw him rake in $27,000 in just one month.

>When asked for comment about the persistence of fake news even after the election, Facebook directed NBC News to a post from CEO Mark Zuckerberg last month in which he laid out the company's plan to tackle the phenomenon.

>Google outlined steps last month that it said would restrict advertising on websites that "misrepresent, misstate, or conceal information." The company did not respond to NBC News' requests for comment on this apparently still-flourishing industry.

>Dimitri says even after the election, while business is less brisk, his fake news is still highly profitable. Like any business, he's aware of the need to adapt.

>"This business updates every hour, every ten minutes, every minute," he says. "There are always news ideas, new types of generating new visitors and that's the thing we all want."

>So while newspapers across the globe are losing advertising revenue, Dimitri's empire of lies is thriving.

>He says he now employs three 15-year-olds, paying them the equivalent of $10 per day. As well as buying new laptops and paying cash to boost his posts on social media, he has also invested some of his earnings into real estate — a joint venture with his parents, who are more than happy with his success.

The political scandal engulfing South Korea has culminated in Park Geun-hye's impeachment but according to one account, it all started with an argument over a puppy.

The former national fencer is closely linked to Choi Soon-sil, 60, the presidential confidante who now faces corruption charges.

Rumours about Mr Ko, 40, have saturated local media, which even labelled him Ms Choi's "toy boy".

But this week in front of a parliamentary committee he denied they were a couple.
Then, he proceeded to tell the extraordinary tale of how an argument prompted him to go to the press with revelations that would ultimately lead to the president's impeachment.

>Dressing the president

According to Mr Ko it all began in 2012, shortly after Ms Park was elected president.

Mr Ko, an Asian Games gold medallist, had long retired from fencing. His day job at that time was running a handbag and clothing company called Villomillo.

One day a friend asked him to show some of Villomillo's latest products to a mysterious buyer.
"My friend asked me to bring some new items (to a designated place), so I did. That's when I saw Choi for the first time," Mr Ko recounted at a public hearing this week.

Ms Choi liked what she saw, and he began supplying her with items which would end up in Ms Park's wardrobe.

He gave around 40 luxury handbags made of ostrich skin and crocodile leather, and 100 bespoke pieces of clothing to the president.

They cost tens of thousands of dollars, and Ms Choi paid for all of them out of her own pocket, according to Mr Ko.

He strongly denied that he and Ms Choi became a couple - they were just friends, he said.

But he did not deny that she trusted him enough to give him appointments in two Germany-based companies which she owned.

As Ms Park's unofficial clothier Mr Ko also began to enjoy fame and success, especially after Ms Park was spotted toting a Villomillo bag in 2013, according to local media reports.

The brand drew celebrity customers and Mr Ko became a member of the local entertainment scene, even joining a celebrity baseball team called Play Boys.

'Puppygate'

In perhaps some of the most extraordinary testimony heard in South Korea's parliamentary chamber, Mr Ko described how trouble was brewing between him and Ms Choi.

In 2014, the businesswoman asked him to take care of her daughter's puppy. Mr Ko brought the dog to his house, then left it there as he went out to play a round of golf.

When he returned, he found Ms Choi in his home, furious with him for abandoning the puppy. The two had a "huge fight", he said.

From then on their relationship went downhill. "She treated me like a slave, swearing at me many times," he said in his candid account.

Angry and hurt, Mr Ko decided to exact revenge by going to the press about Ms Choi and Ms Park's relationship.
Over the months he collected evidence of Ms Choi's power over Ms Park's administration, including CCTV footage of Ms Choi treating presidential aides as her personal servants. He eventually turned them over to a local broadcaster.

Then, in October, he did a TV interview where he alleged Ms Choi's "favourite thing" was to edit Ms Park's presidential speeches.

Reporters went digging for evidence to back it up, and obtained a tablet containing selfies of Ms Choi and files of presidential speeches.

The discovery, along with other revelations of Ms Choi's allegedly suspicious business dealings, sparked public outrage and launched a wide-reaching corruption inquiry that has ensnared even corporate bigwigs and celebrities.

Ms Park later admitted she gave Ms Choi inappropriate government access - including to her speeches - and apologised. But she has denied the allegations of corruption that prosecutors have laid down.
The president has now been impeached, while in another twist Mr Ko is seen as a public hero, hailed by netizens for his "whistleblowing".

One lawmaker during the public hearing even praised him for "opening Pandora's box".

Asked in parliament if he feared opposing Ms Choi, the woman who had the president's ear, Mr Ko said "No".

"I was hot-tempered and never thought about that part," he declared. "I have no regrets."
