Trump’s unpopularity threatens to hobble his presidency

In theory he should be in a strong position because his party will soon control all three branches of the federal government plus a majority of the state governments. The problem is he's on shaky footing within his own party which makes his majority in the Senate weak (they need near 100% party unity or they lose control) and could lead to loses in the House in two years. A lot of Republican control hinges on the next two years, since their momentum from 2018 may determine how the lines are drawn during the 2020 redistricting.
>>
The media and public's refusal to criticize Obama for pulling all kinds of bullshit was a bad thing. If Obama's reign is what a non-hobbled presidency looks like, then things should improve in the coming years. Because if the media actually looks critically at the government's actions maybe the government will feel pressured not to betray the American people so habitually.

Oh but wait, W Bush was an unpopular president too, but at the time the media wouldn't stop licking his butt and parroting obviously bullshit talking points. Two years from now the media will be doing nothing but praising trump, Breitbart will be the new "center" that the media gravitates towards. Watch how quickly the media changes their approach to Trump, and republicans in general, once he is in power.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2016/12/23/report-carrie-fisher-suffers-massive-heart-attack-airplane/

>Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher reportedly suffered a “massive” heart attack while on a flight from London to Los Angeles Friday.

>According to TMZ, the 60-year-old actress went into cardiac arrest roughly 15 minutes before her flight’s scheduled arrival at LAX. An EMT reportedly administered CPR on the plane, and Fisher was taken to an area hospital immediately after it landed.

>The actress was listed in critical condition Friday evening, according to the Los Angeles Times.

>A source told the paper that Fisher was “in a lot of distress” during the flight.

>Fisher shot to superstardom when she starred as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy in the late 1970s and early 80s. She reprised her most famous role in last year’s Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

>Fisher was reportedly on a book tour to promote her autobiography, The Princess Diarist, when she suffered the heart attack.

>An 18-year-old Muslim woman who claimed that three men attacked her on a Manhattan subway this month and tried to pull off her hijab was charged on Wednesday with filing a false report, the police said.

>The woman, Yasmin Seweid, a student at Baruch College, was also charged with obstructing governmental administration, the police said. Both charges are misdemeanors.

>Ms. Seweid, of New Hyde Park on Long Island, had told the police that three white men screaming “Donald Trump!” attacked her on Dec. 1 on an uptown No. 6 train at East 23rd Street, DNAinfo.com reported.

>She told the police that the men had called her a terrorist and that when she tried to move to the other end of the subway car, one of them followed and tried to pull off her traditional head scarf.

>DNAinfo reported that she recanted the story on Tuesday and had made it up to get attention because of problems she was having with her family.

>It was not immediately clear if she had a lawyer.

>A spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ibrahim Hooper, said in an interview on Wednesday that Muslims in America were feeling “tremendous psychological stress and pressure” that can result in episodes like this one.

>“No one out of the blue decides to make this kind of report,” he said. “Whenever there are these rare instances of alleged false reports — it’s still an allegation at this point — it’s used by the growing Islamophobic community to delegitimize and undermine the many legitimate anti-Muslim incidents.”

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/04/elon-musk-trolling-us-conservatives-green-tech

>[Elon Musk] faces an extraordinary barrage of attacks from rightwing thinktanks, lobbyists, websites and commentators.

>One of Musk’s most trenchant critics has been the journalist Shepard Stewart, who writes for a clutch of conservative online news sites. In several articles in September, not long after a SpaceX rocket exploded, Stewart attacked Musk for receiving billions in government subsidies “to make rockets that immediately self destruct” and branded him “a national disgrace”.

>As Musk fought back on Twitter, it became apparent that Stewart was an invention. Even his photo byline had been doctored from a LinkedIn profile of a tech entrepreneur. “Definitely a fake,” Gavin Wax, editor-in-chief of the Liberty Conservative, one of the websites that published Stewart, admitted to Bloomberg.

>The revelation triggered several theories: that Stewart was created by speculators shorting shares in Musk’s companies, or that he was invented by rival rocket companies keen to bring SpaceX down to earth. But Musk may be reassured to learn that Stewart’s attacks on him weren’t that personal. Rather, they appear to be part of a wider agenda against big government, the environmental lobby and liberals in general

>stopelonfromfailingagain.com, regularly publishes negative stories about him. The site is similar to another anti-Musk site, whoiselonmusk.com, created by an organisation called The Center for Business and Responsible Government (CBRG), which describes itself as a “non-partisan organisation dedicated to highlighting cronyism and its effect on American taxpayers and policy” and seems not to exist anywhere but cyberspace.

>Closer inspection of stopelonfromfailingagain.com reveals that it was established by Citizens for the Republic, a political action committee (PAC) set up in the 70s by Ronald Reagan. Dormant for years, CFTR resurfaced in 2008 under Craig Shirley, a biographer of Reagan, whose lobbying firm, Shirley & Banister, claims to have played a key role helping the “Tea Party Patriots in its rise to prominence as the premiere grassroots group in the country”.

>But how and why did CFTR spring back to life?

>One stated: “The revitalized Citizens for the Republic has already secured $17m in solid financial commitments, according to an official involved in raising money for the organisation.”

>documents filed with the US Internal Revenue Service reveal that two linked organisations – the Wellspring Committee and the Annual Fund – donated the best part of $1m between 2010 and 2011.

>they are part of a powerful conservative political network whose influence has global consequences. An investigation by the Center for Responsive Politics found that Wellspring was one of many organisations that in the past was used as a “dark money conduit” by the billionaire industrialist Koch brothers, David and Charles, to channel money to their favoured causes, which have included climate change denial scientists, Tea Party activists and a host of other rightwing groups, including the Heritage Foundation.
>>
>in February when it was announced that James Mahoney, a vice-president at Koch Industries, had teamed up with a former lobbyist for American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers to launch a group promoting petroleum. The group is spending $10m a year talking up petrol while attacking government subsidies for electric vehicles, according to sources who spoke to the Huffington Post.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/koch-electric-vehicles_us_56c4d63ce4b0b40245c8cbf6

>The announcement followed a pledge made last December by the Koch brothers that they and their supporters intended to spend nearly $900m this year helping favoured conservative candidates get elected to Congress, the presidency, and state legislatures. This was double what they spent in the last election cycle and almost as much as was expended by the two presidential campaigns.

>A spokesman for Shirley & Banister declined to comment on specific questions but said: “The Observer may not be familiar with our laws, and therefore we feel a duty to inform you that conservative philosophy is perfectly legal in the United States. While our hearts go out to the liberal groups who may be ‘upset’, Citizens for the Republic will continue to fight back against cronyism and corruption at all levels of government. If liberals can’t understand that, then that is further proof they have learned nothing from this election.”

China: Xi Jinping becomes “core leader”
http://chinaworker.info/2016/12/05/13709/
The concept of “core leader” originated with Deng Xiaoping, who used it in the early 1990s to describe Jiang Zemin as a way to bolster Jiang’s authority at a time of great uncertainty and instability within the regime following the 1989 Beijing massacre. With Xi acquiring this mantle, a People’s Daily editorial declared, “The party centre and the whole party must have a core.” There is a “dire need for strong leadership” said a headline in the ultra-nationalist Global Times, another CCP organ, quoting an ‘expert’ from the Research Centre for Government Integrity Building.

>The statue was erected in Taiyuan, the capital and largest city of north China’s Shanxi province, and it heralds the upcoming Chinese Year of the Rooster, according to China’s ruling Communist Party’s People’s Daily.

>The designer said the piece was inspired by Mr. Trump -- his gestures and hair.

>The company that owns the mall had commissioned the piece, said Cao Mingliang, deputy director of the planning department from the N1 ArtWalk Mall, CNN reported. And it will serve as the mall’s mascot.

>At least four stores are even offering replicas of the giant rooster. They vary in price, starting as low as $57 and climbing as high as $1,739 for those seeking a 32-foot figure, according to CNN.

Jewish Groups Get 94% of Homeland Security Grants

The Department of Homeland Security allocated to Jewish institutions $12 million, or 94 percent, of $13 million in funds for securing nonprofits.

The Jewish Federations of North America’s Washington office director, William Daroff, said Tuesday that the allocation made sense particularly in light of an intensification of threats on Jewish community targets in the United States and overseas.

“In the current environment there are threats to nonprofits and to Jewish institutions,” he told JTA, noting a swell of attacks on Jewish institutions in Europe in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip.

“We see it clearly in Europe, but we also see it here in the United States in Kansas City, in Seattle and numerous occasions that are not made public or do not come to fruition,” Daroff said. He referred to attacks in recent years on Jewish community centers in Kansas City and Seattle.

The allocations, announced July 25, are based on applications that are then assessed for threat by local and federal law enforcement officials.

The $13 million disbursed last week brings to $151 million the amount disbursed since the program started in 2005, most of it to Jewish institutions.

Leading the lobbying for the program have been the Jewish Federations of North America, the Orthodox Union and Agudath Israel of America.

In a statement, the JFNA thanked Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson as well as lawmakers for championing the funds, among them Sens. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Richard Shelby (R-Ala), Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Dan Coats (R-Ind.), and Reps. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), John Carter (R-Texas) and David Price (D-N.C.).

The article is a bit misleading. She was not killed for shopping without her husband. She was killed for shopping without a Mahram, which is any male kin, not just the husband. Also the punishment seems extreme. Normally Islam states that a strong beating or a number of lashes is sufficient for this kind of crime. She probably did some other things or was a repeat offender (possible if she was stranded in this place with no male kin).

http://www.ibtimes.com/chinas-ambitious-space-program-white-paper-reveals-plans-send-probe-far-side-moon-2465716

>In a white paper outlining the plans for its ambitious space program, China announced Tuesday it would, sometime in 2018, seek to become the first country to soft land a probe on the far side of the moon. The spacecraft, Chang’e-4, would help better understand the formation and evolution of the moon, the country’s State Council Information Office said in the paper.

>“Through the lunar exploration project, topographic and geological surveys will be implemented and laboratory research conducted on lunar samples; geological survey and research as well as low-frequency radio astronomy observation and research will be carried out targeting the landing area on the far side of the moon,” the white paper read.

>In addition, the white paper also reiterated China’s commitment to send a probe to Mars by 2020.

>“[China] will conduct further studies and key technological research on the bringing back of samples from Mars, asteroid exploration, exploration of the Jupiter system and planet fly-by exploration,” the information office said.

>Since it sent its first satellite into orbit in 1970, China has been pumping large amounts of cash into its military-backed space program. It sent its first astronaut to space in 2003, and in 2011, it launched Tiangong-1 — the first operational component of the Tiangong program, which seeks to put a permanently manned space station into service by 2022.

KKK Leaders Allege Producers Paid Them to Fake Scenes in Canceled A&E Documentary

A&E to conduct investigation to probe what happened during production

The subjects of a TV documentary series about the Ku Klux Klan abruptly canceled last week by A&E allege to Variety that significant portions of what was filmed were fabricated by the producers.

Some KKK leaders divulged that they were paid hundreds of dollars in cash each day of filming to compel them on camera to distort the facts of their lives to fit the documentary’s predetermined narrative: tension between Klan members and relatives of theirs who wanted to get out of the Klan.

The KKK leaders who were interviewed by Variety detailed how they were wooed with promises the program would capture the truth about life in the organization; encouraged not to file taxes on cash payments for agreeing to participate in the filming; presented with pre-scripted fictional story scenarios; instructed what to say on camera; asked to misrepresent their actual identities, motivations and relationships with others, and re-enacted camera shoots repeatedly until the production team was satisfied.

The production team even paid for material and equipment to construct and burn wooden crosses and Nazi swastikas, according to multiple sources including Richard Nichols, who is one of the featured subjects of the documentary series as the Grand Dragon of a KKK cell known as the Tennessee White Knights of the Invisible Empire. He also said he was encouraged by a producer to use the epithet “nigger” in interviews.

“We were betrayed by the producers and A&E,” said Nichols. “It was all made up—pretty much everything we said and did was fake and because that is what the film people told us to do and say.”
