What does /lit/ think of the Witcher series?
>littered with inconsistencies
>Geralt is an unbearable protagonist
>Sapkowski has never spoken to a woman. Any mention of them is typically for sexual purposes with few exceptions. (Nenneke.)
>Adapts any famous fairly tale into his own pile of shit as if to say, "I'm cultured AND unoriginal."
They have their strong points.
>Dandelion is fantastic.
>rich lore
>Sapkowski writes combat with astonishing fluidity
>Valid points concerning racism, equality, dooming nature, dark side of human nature, etc.
They're overall decent. There are plenty of dry places between the seemingly random vibrant descriptions and explosive action scenes. They're not the best, but it's easy to see what made them so popular. Probably a 6/10, and I truthfully feel like I'm being generous.

fantasy novels written by a bitter old man in which the protagonist looks like something drawn by some 90s nerd who likes d&d and nu-metal.
i can't help but smile when i read about how salty he is over the success of the video games. he thought they were going to be shit and took a paycheck instead of royalties and missed out on a shit ton of cash.

Fucking this. I lost all respect for him when I saw what a whiny old cunt he is.
I am looking for literature (but more philosophy) with following themes.
1. We did not choose to be born
2. Suicide may be rational option.
3. Hating own parents/being bad person.
4. Depression is not real, its a lie create to hide truth from peoples. Truth that existence is suffering and suicide is only way out.
I am sure there are philisophers who answers those question (like this guy who hang himself from pile of own books, forgot his name), i need a help in looking for them. Pic unrelated

Pseud teenage angst thread. Yawn.
Just finished this fantastic book by Rorty
It's both meticulous in it's diagnosis of the left in the last 50 years and prophetic of what has happened since 1998. I think in years to come this book will be regarded as one of the most important in our time.
Anyone else read this master piece?
>>9610181
I have a copy of it, but I never read it. I know Rorty is especially critical in how he pins the left. Can you give us a brief synopsis as well as a summation of its points?
>>9610186
Well god damn that was prophetic.
It's fun LARPing as cultural Christians but you guys don't actually believe that wine turns into blood and such, right?
from a psychological perspective
It's all true, OP.
>>9609923
The Words of Institution aren't figurative speech like the parables but are offered with highest solemnity and directness. Also, Paul in 1 Cor 13 indicates that eating the bread and drinking the cup without recognizing the body and blood present makes one subject to judgment
So Catholics believe the bread and wine turn into body and blood, while Lutherans believe the body and blood are present along with the bread and wine
What's wrong with fiction, /lit/?

34 DAYS UNTIL WOMEN AND MEN BY JOSEPH MCELROY DROPS.
are you ready for the reading event of the summer?
i mean you can already read it
The relative unattainability of this doorstopper is driving force behind its dubious meme status. In 34 days it becomes just another pomo tome. I expect that after a very brief uptick in McElroy shilling, it will plunge to lower than the current levels shitposting.

will you be reading it?
What does /lit/ think of this New York Times bestseller?
You know....this isn't a christian board. We're a little more well read than everyone else, and more tolerant of ideas because most of ours are out there and ridiculous too, but this christian stuff is getting a little old even for us.

Is Aristotle the ultimate redpill?
>God exists as a prime mover, but he doesn't care about us and only thinks about himself
>Women and slaves have inferior souls and cannot even attain to the same virtue as normal men
>Not all people are equal; some are inherently superior to others
>A man must be strong enough to defend himself and his honor, and should not sit idle if disgraced
>Virtue and pursuit of knowledge are important, but you still need to deal with real life
Honestly, he is refreshing after reading Plato, who pushes asceticism, forgiveness, and teaches you to be obsequious. Where do I go after this?
>>9604647
>Women and slaves have inferior souls
Greeks also didn't understand the womb. Redpill != correct any more than bluepill
>>9604649
>tfw Aquinas is almost a better Aristotelian than Aristotle himself

Who will defend the canon once he's gone?
>>9610965
oh my dear boy, the canon defends itself, all one must do is merely point it in the right direction and plug their ears.
>>9610969
This. The whole point of there being a "literary canon" is that the importance of the works is self evident. Bloom's contribution was of studying the canon's history and comprising a pretty decent grocery list, but that's it.
>>9610985
He didn't really study the canon's history, just specific works in the canon. It would be interesting to read a historical study of the formation of the canon, though.
This is the board where I'm gonna find Shakespeare people, right? Listen, I wanna watch (or listen to) Merchant of Venice. I'd prefer the text not be altered and Shylock be portrayed as sympathetically as possible. Tell me what version I'm going to watch (or listen to) tonight, be it audio book/drama, film adaptation, or whatever.
Pic related, I'm gonna have to default to this if I don't get a recc.
>just read the script
No. Shakespeare's dialogue can't be read. It has to be performed.
>>9610325
>I'd Shylock be portrayed as sympathetically as possible
Go back to leftypol
Shakespeare was a Catholic who hated democracy, women, and Jews, had homoerotic tendencies, and appreciated a good cuck joke. He was redpilled, just like me, and wouldn't stand for such bullshit

Is there any 19th and 20th white american writter who was publicly against slavery or apartheid? The closest I can think of this is Harper Lee. I know racism was part of that context, but I would be glad if I found out one.
none
all white people are racist
William Blake
What? nearly everything you read in high school.
What are your thoughts on "the sorrows of young Werther"? Finished reading it, but I really didn't like it, which is surprising, because I read "Faust I" beforehand and enjoyed it quite a bit (in fact it made me want to read more from Goethe, which is why I started "Werther").
Is there something I'm missing. Or is it really just a tragedy without much substance?
It's an angsty shitfest that took Europe by storm. It was the YA fiction of its day. Later in his life Goethe deeply regretted writing it.
