i'm trying to write an opera but im not really good at writing texts, only music scores. So i came with the idea to ask for the help of my fellas at /mu/. the opera should be about the characters loosing their bodies and becoming virtual beings.
here's how you can help me. each user can write three words on a single post. everything you write you become oficial text, no censorship.
ill start with 3 words below:

Good fucking luck. Also if you're libretto isn't in verse form just give up trying to set any music to it
Direct causes operate only within certain limits; beyond them they produce the opposite effect.

What is your idea of a perfect horror story?
Is it scary = perfect or compelling plot = perfect?
>>9632995
If it's perfect it probably has both of those criteria
Yeah I dunno I think if a story has something to say then its good.
Stephen King made some pretty scary stuff with good plots but they're not perfect.
>>9632995
Mood and imagery are much more important than plot in horror
It's time for some critique!
An ace in the military, Rupert Aceae knew acedia. His hands looked acellular, looking stiff from war. He was aceous of the stereotypical “veteran,” wearing his dog tags and wearing a shirt depicting acephalous reading. His teeth acerbated you. They were too damn shiny, like he cared. The acerbity of his nature was Achaean in intimidation. He had those squinted eyes like he was suffering from achalasia. Guy was smart though. Would ache and make his own story for it. Would turn the game you were playing into some a cheval festival. He achieved some great achievements while in Iraq, like some damned Achilles. His Achilles heel was his own ego. Acidic acid-head. Buys LSD in town, his acidophilic sheets. Pictures of ack-acks were on his wall, and when acknowledged, Rupert would show the acme of his career with hand motions.
“Iraq. 2004. Bit of acne on my forehead, as my crew flew over the Desert. I was acock in my seat, looking down at the acre-foots below me. Already smelled some damn acrimony before I got in the plane. Knew it was gonna be bad. So our planes lift, you know? Aircraft carriers and the air crew from airdromes had no air condition, so the air force would wait to land on the airheads and out of airlock. The sky was often filled with aurbusses and airburts shreiked. As cats are ailments to ailurophiles, ailerons through air was my ‘aha’. Like acrobats our planes flipped n’ soared. Nanners took the 09’, swipin’ by the aconites and the acorns. Zoomed past air acold. We bombed them acorn worms. We heard the acoustics zoom inside our ears, already acquainted with it.”
The listener would then, most likely, acquiesce in acquaintance. It’d take an aquired sort of patience to listen to his monologues. He’d tell you things like, “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is for the gays. God’ll keel em.”
Acquisition of his trait labeled you an asshole. Maybe something lesser.
Rupert was acquitted from the military for his acrophobia.
His teeth were separated by an acre-inch.
He came up to me, which made me notice his acrocentric posture.

Are you trying to include as many words beginning with 'a' as possible? Also, what do you think is good about what you posted? What were you trying to achieve?

What's the general consensus on audiobooks? I'm self-diagnosed with ADHD and find listening to podcasts whilst playing certain video games works well for me, would it be that bad to do with books?
Dude, fucking do whatever you want, nobody cares. Why don't you experiment a little and tell us the results in a few months, jackass?
>>9632707
Sorry that was unnecessarily harsh. In truth there is a consensus on audiobooks here: It's not really reading. You can't focus as well, you retain less information, and you can't immediately re-read sentences you didn't understand.
But it's not pointless, you can listen to lectures and get a lot out of them for example. I would not try to do this while playing video games, but go for it if you think you can do it.
>>9632699
That depends on what type of audiobooks you're going for. Short stories/light genre fiction could probably work just fine, but any heavier material is a pain in the ass.
What works for me when playing videogames is listening to lectures to build, for lack of a better term, passive knowledge. You're probably not gonna be able to talk about the subject, but when you encounter it later down the road you'll understand what is being discussed.
1. Is pic related a good buy? Or should I get the books separately? I like single volumes.
Robert Fagles is a good translator, right?
2. Is "War and Peace" translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (Vintage Classics) a good option?
I know they put translations for the French passages and thats perfect for a non-French speaker like me.
Robert Fagles provides an excellent translation of all three books; his translations are probably the foremost along with the Hackett versions. Do note as well that before reading the Aeneid, you may want to read The Death of Virgil by Broch. It's a long and intensive read, but the poeticism is rewarding. You may well want to start it before reading all three.
I have never read Tolstoy and therefore can't help you with your other question.
>>9632926
>You may well want to start it before reading all three.
is it so? Before reading all three?? That's news to me.
Thanks for the input.
They're good quality books and the introductions are great. Yes Fagles is a good translator.
There is one problem with them though.
When we were still young and dating my now wife had a retarded religious mom who insisted we keep the door open when we hung out in her room. She said it went against her beliefs blah blah. This was a tough time, living out of my car, shooting up heroin, no school no job- but I was happy cuz my girl was taking care of me so we spent a lot of time together. We would hang out upstairs in her room and she'd bring me food her mom prepared or we'd watch films, just laying in her bed. Her mom hated me to say the least. Anyways, her mom would be home and the door would be open, the bed right in center of the room facing the door, and she would be sucking my dick, all the while on high alert for noises of her mom or sister, but being too high to give a fuck, and the flood, the rush, oh my god! Feverous some days I'd just pull up her skirt or drag down her shorts and slowly build up my strokes until I was ready, and with a psychotic gaze I would stare out the open door to the empty hallway and feel all at once annihilation through the flagrant rappings against the soft wet innards of my teenage princess- I don't care if she can hear us. The combination of dope, demand and defiance led to the most euphoric orgasms I ever had. I'd eventually get her pregnant and her mom still insisted we keep the door open. God I hate that woman.

So, this is an experimental thread. The same general occurs on /tg/, but I noticed the discussion regards mostly storytelling craftsmanship. I believe this thread is totally appropriate for /lit/. Do you have an alternative world in which to tell your work? How is said world different from the actual one? Do you remember any author with a particularly good fiction cartography?
INB4 Westeros. I find GRR Martin maps to be very poor, as if he wasn't planing a head, with no regard of plate tectonics and the like.

Who the fuck looks at a fantasy map and thinks "this author clearly didnt consider plate tectonics"
You must be especially autistic.
Besides, do you have a complete enough understanding of plate tectonics to look at a landmass and say "that wouldnt happen?
Also isnt westeros just the UK flipped around a bit? Anyone have that pic?
>>9632444
What I mean is that said map looks "suspicious", it´s just not natural-looking. No, I don´t have a very complete knowledge of plate tectonics but one can recognize better attempts by intuition.

Anyone here read this? I just finished "The Royal Family" and was planning to purchase some more Vollmann. This one seems interesting.
Also, Vollmann general, I guess.

all I've read we're the rainbow stories and that was a fun time. I wish I looked fucks up so I could penetrate places like he does.

I'd like to. It annoys me how many feckin' tomes Vollmann writes, because I like his writing and the topics he chooses, but goddam if they don't take weeks/months to finish
>>9632428
I enjoy spending so much time with his characters, tho. Big books are kinda intimidating at first, but reaching the end of one of these big books is an unparalleled feeling.

And if you're a male, The Sound and the Fury.

Nrx is bullshit. Instead of espousing such simple-minded elitism we need to mobilize the masses into a blood-hungry mob. Radical populism and caesarism not aristocracy and accelerationism, ok? Praise Schmitt (and Spengler).
Recently went through and read some of his tech essays again, they're interesting in light of his current venture.
I heard through the grapevine that the main purpose of his blog was to attract the right element to this venture, which i guess would be anti-usg subversives. Which i guess implies that this is the information weapon he talked about.
>>9632210
the issue with moldbug's writing is his audience
