So, this is an experimental thread. The same general occurs on /tg/, but I noticed the discussion regards mostly storytelling craftsmanship. I believe this thread is totally appropriate for /lit/. Do you have an alternative world in which to tell your work? How is said world different from the actual one? Do you remember any author with a particularly good fiction cartography?

INB4 Westeros. I find GRR Martin maps to be very poor, as if he wasn't planing a head, with no regard of plate tectonics and the like.

Who the fuck looks at a fantasy map and thinks "this author clearly didnt consider plate tectonics"
You must be especially autistic.
Besides, do you have a complete enough understanding of plate tectonics to look at a landmass and say "that wouldnt happen?
Also isnt westeros just the UK flipped around a bit? Anyone have that pic?

What I mean is that said map looks "suspicious", it´s just not natural-looking. No, I don´t have a very complete knowledge of plate tectonics but one can recognize better attempts by intuition.

Nice. I dislike it a little less now. Thanks anon.

I can't even really be mad at him for this. It works and looks nice. I definitely think that a lot of fantasy authors try too hard when making their maps. I remember the map from Eragon making very little sense when I read it as a child. Certain locations seemed far too convenient.

>Do you have an alternative world in which to tell your work?
>How is said world different from the actual one?
Yes, and its very different, but with many things that are familiar to us. With world building I mostly tend to focus on the cultures and their contrasting mentalities/approaches rather than geography, but the geography does have its relevance. It's a very small continent and its all these people have ever known. So if some shit starts they are playing for keeps, and identification with one's home region tends to be very strong.

>Do you remember any author with a particularly good fiction cartography?
Not particularly, to be honest I haven't looked at fantasy maps for any sense of realism. It's just a setting and more often than not the lore itself will justify the shapes. For example Middle Earth has been quite literally shaped by the gods over and over, so it can be pretty much anything.
