>A group of international researchers recently analyzed 2.2 million book translations from around the world: Their visualization, based on data provided by UNESCO’s Index Translationum project, offers rare insights into so-called hub languages, which are especially significant culturally: If a book is published in a smaller language, it will usually be translated into a hub language. In this graphic, hub languages are characterized by their central position, multi-connectedness and the intensity of the nations' relationship — which are visually emphasized by the width of the lines.

>For instance, books from Azerbaijan (one of the green countries) will nearly always be translated into Russian. From Russian, a book will most likely be translated into English — which is the world's premier hub language for written publications.

>What is interesting about this graphic is that cultural significance does not appear to correlate with the most recent economic or demographic importance of a language: German, Dutch or even Russian are still disproportionately represented.

>Consider some of the important findings in recent Arab Human Development Reports and related studies:

>• The total number of books translated into Arabic in the last 1,000 years is fewer than those translated into Spanish in one year.

>• Greece — with a population of fewer than 11 million — translates five times as many books from abroad into Greek annually as the 22 Arab countries combined, with a total population of more than 300 million, translate into Arabic.

>Similarly, the adult literacy rate for women aged 15 and older was 43.6 percent in Egypt and 74 percent in Syria, while for the world’s top 20 countries it was nearly 100 percent.

With the rest of his work considered, is The Will to Power worth reading? Even just for Heidegger?

You should not be reading any Nietzsche until you start with the Greeks.
>>
>>9618498
This is already under progress. It's just for future reference. I often hear Will to Power is edited by his sister and people skip it. Just wondering if there's any value to it.
>>
It's Nietzsche. Of course it's worth reading.

What is lazier:

>Meta-humans/abnormal-humans being subjected to inhumane experiments by a shadowy government organization or corporation. Bonus points if these "experiments" are never elaborated upon, are just torture porn, or is being used to milk sympathy points.

>Robots/artificial-humans being slaves, discriminated against and considered as not human or not having a soul despite clearly having human actions, thoughts and emotions. Bonus points if it is the main thrust of the plot or is being milked for sympathy points.

High fantasy which tries to use overly detailed lore dumps as a replacement for good writing.
>>
>book about a writer with writer' s block
>>
>>9618277
I'd say the first one. Literally the definition of lazy. If the second one is handled by making the robots legitimately disconnected from humanity. If it's the humans seeing them as human it creates turmoil. A robot, a computer, wouldn't care if it is or not and if you care or not.

The whole "what is human" thing has been done before and really makes no sense if you aren't an autist that applies emotional resonance to unnatural beings. Any normal human being should care more about hitting a squirrel in their car than killing a robot with their hands.

I am working on a small treatise; an individual epistemology that applies linguistics to architectural theory. The central device is a re-working of a small portion of the Iliad. Similar to Kafka's "Silence of the Sirens" in my mind.

I just finished an unrelated novella about two whalers who sail to the end of the world. I am ashamed of my writing, /lit/. Send for me....

A stream of conscious book. There's a lot of backstory to this one...

I remembered the dictionary a while back, and I'm quite serious that I think it's made me insane. All I think about is every word in the dictionary. Medullary, constant thoughts. Writing this book, I'm using every word in the dictionary, describing with the most objectively precise language to describe situations.

It will never get published. Nobody will buy it.
I'm at 400 pages. I kid you not.

Need a grammar nazi to tell me why the fuck im wrong...

It was a bright morning that day; my mom had been planning this trip to Spain for weeks now.
My aunt was supposed to picks us up at home and take us to the airport, but my cousin had had a car accident that morning and he was very ill so she couldn’t take us to the airport, so we called a taxi. We had been waiting around 30 minutes and the taxi wouldn’t show up, thankfully we were ready a long time ago, before our plane takes off.
Eventually the taxi finally arrived. Unfortunately on the way to the airport 3 cars had crashed in middle of the road completely blocking it, we were easily 1 hour stuck in the same place waiting for someone to move those cars, believe it or not, we actually made it to the airport just in time. We had arrived at the exact moment when people were getting inside the plane.
Once inside we were relief thinking ourselves “ok, finally we can relax”, but we were wrong, we were informed that they took us in the wrong airplane, that the one we were in didn’t have fuel so we had to wait until the other plane was ready, I had flown before, and this had never happened to me before, I know delays on flights are pretty common but the fact that they confused the airplanes was just silly.
Long story short we were transferred to the new airplane and we finally arrived in Spain, we were happy and excited for the first time in this trip, but this wouldn’t last long, we had been waiting our luggage for a long time now, everyone got theirs and ours just wouldn’t show up, we went to the authorizes to report what happened and after almost 1 hour we were told us that our luggage hadn´t left the first plane we were in, you just can´t imagine how mad my mom got.
To conclude the airline gave us a free night at a hotel until our luggage arrived in the next flight available, to be honest everything that happened after we took our luggage back were laughs and smiles, but still I don´t think we could get unluckier than that.

Why was Ayn Rand so obsessed with the concept of objective reality? Is that really necessary for her love of free market capitalism?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I see her whole philosophy as "you can have your cake and eat it too".

>You have access to objective reality!
>And morality is objective! But you get to be selfish!
>And you get to be free! And you're awesome!

It's a sort of fantasy.
>>
>>9618180
Isn't her argument something like
>reality is objective
>as is morality
>objective logical morality leads us to see that 'selfishness' is moral and logical
>>
>>9618196

That was my interpretation. Seems like she thought that being "selfless" was almost on par with suicide.

Is it too hard to read Foucault's more methodological works (Order of Things, Archaeology of Knowledge, etc.) with no prior knowledge of Nietzsche? If it helps, I've read Saussure.

foucault was more of a historian/sociologist than a "philosopher" so he didn't write in some queer way that requires reading 10,000 pages of antique scrolls first to get his point

You're thinking of the adjective proper, which is sometimes used after the noun, which I suppose makes it look like an adverb. It's an imitation of French.

Otherwise known as a NEET. There's nothing wrong with not being employed. Nietzsche detested Protestant values. Clearly he's not your man.

What are some of the best entry level works regarding this topic in ya'lls opinion?

Some popular books:
World Order, Diplomacy by Kissinger

Tragedy of Great Power Politics by Mearshiemer

The Grand Chessboard, Strategic Vision by Zbigniew Brzezinski (For U.S.)

Other popular authors:
Francis Fukuyama
Peter Zeihan
Huntington
George Friedman
Robert D. Kaplan

Textbooks:
Heywood's Global Politics
Baylis': The Globalization of World Politics

I think there's a Very Short Introduction book as well. The Great Courses also has a few lectures covering Domino Theory, etc.

For the most part you'll get the most mileage out of reading periodicals like The Economist, Foreign Affairs, etc. when it comes to day-to-day geopolitics.

(Note that Kissinger and Brzezinski are basically war criminals.)
