Why do guys who bitch all day like "hurr people don't read nowadays" only read contemporary novels?
>>7749750
The only contemporary novels I read are anonymous imageboards desu.
>reading only classics
*tips top hat*

Why wouldn't you though?
You don't want to loiter your mind with recyclable trash, do you now?
"Winston realizes that in the face of pain, there are no heroes. Nothing is worse than physical pain." (it's from 1984)
I feel bad after reading this, is there anything in literature that in some way contradicts this?
Nope. Welcome to the real, adult world. It fucking sucks here, and you're here forever.
Sonic Heroes contends that there are, in fact, heroes.
How many masterpiece have do you reckon have gone entirely unknown because of publishers?
Joyce for example went through years of struggle getting Dubliners published and his later stuff only arguably got published because of his connections. This is a guy who is central to canon and wrote some of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century.
Nobody knows

Does anybody have any good Joyce backgrounds? Preferably in a good resolution and and eye-patch era Joyce.
If it wasn't for based Brod, we would never have most of Kafka's work
any thoughts? I've just read some pages and it seems pretentiuos at best, and, at worst, a rather poor attempt at a multiperspectival narration
I want to read, but I'm wary of being memed by the publishing industry. The mixed review from readers don't help, although I'm not sure if the book is avarage or if it's just a reaction from the hype around it

Another Big Book by a white nerd with three names. One of which, mind you, is allegedly 'Risk.' To be avoided.
I read it, and thought it was bad. Not dreadful, and it's nice to read a big book, but bad. The quality isn't high enough, and it didn't need 900 pages. I don't know how the guy got paid 2 million dollars for that. I find it hard to believe a company would pay him more than $50k, if that.
should I buy a Kindle? Will I save money??

I read 50-100 books a year. I also abandon about 15 or so due to boredom or dislike and my library doesnt have an effective interlibrary loan (which I would certainly use if I could). I pay for usually 3-4 of them.
Depends, do you have a list of a few hundred books right now that you want to read and are in kindle ready formats?
I did, so it was an easy choice for me. Books will always feel nicer to smell and touch. But creepy library germs, ew. Purchasing physical copies is out of the question for me because I simply don't have the space to house thousands of books, nor would I want to really when I can have them in a digital format. I'm not a hoarder, and it's really easy to start and never stop buying books.
With Calibre (free software) it's as easy putting books on a Kindle as it would be copying files to a usb stick.
Short Story/prose General:
Has anyone ever read a short story without a narrative, or where the narrative is unimportant?
I like the idea of writing a piece of prose that focuses on an aura of a place or a person. Maybe just a character piece.
But then I think to myself, 'hey, Wordsworth, why not write a poem in that case you fucking idiot?'
Anyone done a good job of that, Short prose is very difficult to write.
I have read stories like this, and I highly recommend Graham Greene's "The Invisible Japanese Gentlemen":

Franz Kafka's "11 sons"
Can you recommend books that deal with self-hatred, shame, solitude, self-inferiority, the inability to make real connections with people and to even know what they truly think under all their false appearances?
Already read Steppenwolf and No Longer Human.

Dumas isn't an author where translation matters, his appeal is the stories he tells and the plot crashing together.
I just got done with "Annie On My Mind" and I'm looking for more God tier Lesbo books. What are your suggestions?

I always see people on /lit/ talk like they've published a bunch, and it doesn't seem genuine
Who here on /lit/ is actually published? And sells well?
And who are you?
>>7749571
the people on /lit/ who've published tend to be people who've got a story snuck by some middling litmag editor
i've never seen anybody claim in any plausible way to be published in a selling-type way
(there are also some academics who have published books no one buys, but i think you're referring to fiction)
>>7749577
I've seen a bunch of people refer to their sleuth of best-selling books or whatever, and want to know if they're memeing, or there are actually best-selling authors who like to post on /lit/
>>7749589
They are meming of course.
Why are cook books so popular? They are literally always at the top of this best-selling list.
Amazingly, people like to eat.
Nowadays, your typical book-reader is a bored housewife, in her mid thirties or older, fat probably and with several children. You do the math. They are the death of literature.

You ride the tiger, of course.
What book by Alexandre Dumas (father) would you recommend? Something with that classic light feeling of adventure, that his pieces are known for.
I've read the classics; count of Monte Cristo, the three mousquetaires (also the follow up books) and aventures de John Davys (couldn't find the english name).
