How much company do you get from books and the internet /lit/?

How viable is the literary lifestyle if you aren't going all out on it?

I'm about to start my 9 to 5 job.
I have no friends, but until now I have enjoyed reading philosophy and discussing it online (here and a couple other places).

I know some social interaction is indispensable and normallessness/solitude usually cause depression. Will the internet be enough for the amount of "company" I need or should I preemptively an hero given the crushing loneliness coming my way?

Anyone else here on the same boat?

Pic sorta related

TL:DR: No friends, read and think /lit/ are friends, will I feel lonely?

are experiences in virtual reality and fantasy just as fulfilling and real as IRL?

I think so. fellow NEET here who thinks my fellow vietnamese basket weavers are my only real friends. oh god that feels sad to write but I think its just the societal pressure of >tfw no gf

I am happiest shitposting here. IRL people make me sad. saw a horse float accident today. the horse was fucked. I felt better than I have all week.

I have the republic by Plato and it's 400+ pages. 160 analysis alone. When will I possibly find the time to read it all? The analysis is not in form of a dialogue
>>
>>7745533

Bruh, if the Republic has got you worked up Kant will straight up rape you.

As /lit/'s standard analytic I'd recommend you don't give the Greeks undue emphasis.

>We cannot, of course, here analyze the mythology of the modem elites in all its manifestations. We shall confine ourselves to a few remarks. First of all, we may note the redeeming function of "difficulty," especially as found in works of modern art. If the elite revel in Finnegans Wake, or in atonal music, or in tachisme, it is also because such works represent closed worlds, hermetic universes that cannot be entered except by overcoming immense difficulties, like the initiatory ordeals of the archaic and traditional societies. On the one hand, one has the experience of an "initiation," an experience that has almost vanished from the modern World ; on the other hand, one proclaims to the "others" (i.e., the "mass" ) that one belongs to a select minority-not, as once, to an aristocracy ( for modern elites lean toward the left), but to a gnosis that has the advantage of being at once spiritual and secular in that it opposes both official values and the traditional churches. Through their cult of extravagant originality, of difficulty, of incomprehensibility, the elites advertise their escape from the banal universe of their parents while at the same time revolting against certain contemporary philosophies of despair.

>Basically, being fascinated by the difficulty, not to say the incomprehensibility, of works of art expresses the desire to discover a new, secret, hitherto unknown meaning for the World and human life. One dreams of being "initiated" and thereby made able to understand the occult meaning of all these destructions of artistic languages, these "original" experiences that, at first sight, no longer seem to have anything in common with art. The torn posters, the empty, scorched, slashed canvases, the "art objects" that explode on opening day, the improvised plays in which the actors' speeches are drawn by lot-all this must have a meaning, just as certain incomprehensible words in Finnegans Wake come to be fraught with many meanings and values and with a strange beauty for the initiate when he discovers that they are derived from modern Greek or Swahili words disfigured by aberrant consonants, and enriched by secret allusions to possible puns when they are spoken aloud and very fast.

Pretty interesting OP. What's the source? (Google not leading to anything)

>cherry picks the most significantly abrasive or nonsensical Moderns
>uses it to create a mythical unfalsifiable thesis of bougie gnosis

Its like Eliade was too pleb to understand the shit that was going on, picked the worst targets, and then tried to say "oh look how much i can seeeeeeeeee into your yearning for mythological backing".

Read Gellner's The Cunning of Unreason for how to deal with shit biscuits like him and psychoanalytics

How the fuck can critical theory be taken seriously AT ALL??? What hope do normal people have if Schopenhauer and Chomsky don't have a fucking clue and freely admit so?

Critical Theory is just a load of attempted proof by analogies, over extrapolating, unfalsifiable statements melded together in to a really fucking overintellectualised mush which allows you to sprinkle in bits of your cultural capital ("*sniff* Theesh sheen een Fool Metal Jackeet perfectly parallels Father Zhosheema een Ze Brothers Karamazov...") for maximum pseudo-intellectuality.

The objet petit a of the shit post is the jouissance, or the surplus inanity of its content, rendering its obscene incomprehension to the average poster in to a perverse symbol of the phallic super-ego desire of the shitposter.

Fuck off STEMpleb.

Hey /lit/ is there a book that confirms all my biased and stupid political views? I want a book that tells me that what I think is right and that doesn't criticise my shallow and narrow worldview.
Thanks in advance

How well done are the Garnett translations of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's works? thinking of buying his complete collection for a buck and it would seem the majority are done by Garnett while a couple are done by Hogarth

Hey /lit/, so I'm pretty interested in reading 'The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire', but before I make a purchase, I'd like to ask a few questions about it.

So first off, what kind of book is it? Google says it's non-fiction, but I just wanted to make sure that it's not an essay-type book, because I don't like reading those kinds of books. Does it have a narrative of any sort? With characters and stuff?

Second, I'm going to be buying the Everyman's Library edition from bookdepository, but there's a bunch of different versions and I don't know which one I should get. I don't want to get the $300 full set one as I can't afford to pay $300 right now, so I'm going with an $80 one for vol. 1-3. Some of them have black and white spines, and others have black and gold. Is there a difference between the two? I don't want to have vol. 1-3 as one design, and vol. 4-6 as another.

Thanks.

Michael Punke graduated high school in my hometown. When the movie came out it became a big deal. Shit was crazy.

But anyways, yeah I read it and it was alright. The movie is definitely better. It's extremely simple to read and you can probably crank it out in a day. Nothing overally special though.
>>
>>7745584
you're wrong.
book is better
Michael Punke's work was raped
>>
>>7745623
Please. The book was nothing more than Punke excessively masturbating over how much trapper history he knew.

Poems are meant to have rhyme and rhythm. "Slam poetry" and "Experimental poetry" are rarely poetry.

Discuss.

What about blank verse?

Insert quote about jangling like endings.

Largely agree. Edgy experimental poetry just distinguishes poetry lovers from posers and fashion readers
>>
>>7745380
Poetry.
Rhythm is the final qualification for what is poetry and "ayy sentences that make you go hmmmmm XD"

He checks for all the important things one needs when leaving the house. Apparently he needs Marxist literature for nefarious reasons. That's the joke.

>>7745162
Nope. watch the background, he gained marxist literature that evening when went home.

>>7745171
I think the sky turned evil because he was feeling a little mischievous over his marxist literature.

Welcome to the summer
of discontentment.

We have salt and sand,
sour wine.

Dried lake bed,
the skeleton of a forest.

We have something,
you might want to hear.

Some good news that should
make you nervous.

Welcome to the place
of your refreshment.

We have a lawn
that lasts forever.

The sprinklers mist
runs down all the way.

We have something
you might want to see.

Look at your face, you're glowing!
But drop that mask and find another one showing.
Looking at you it makes me wonder,
Was it a move or was it a blunder?

Look at those tears, nothing will be the same.
But when the flood has gone, what remains?
Thinking of you makes me worry,
what rots away you rebuild in a hurry.

good books on nuclear war/weaponry?

i have, i think, a pretty commonplace fascination and fear of these bad mothers and am interested in any kind of reading on them, fiction, nonfiction, pro, anti, neutral

just specifically the weaponry and the destruction and the politics and ethics involved, no faggy postapoclaypse stuff

thanks

I agree that it is and interesting subject but I don't know many books to rec you. You might try The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes.
>>
These are more academic works but I'd definitely suggest Nuclear Rites by Hugh Gusterson (its an ethnography of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) and almost all of Gabrielle Hecht's books (she's a historian and all of her work is great). There's one other anthropologist who does some great work on nuclear weapons-- if i remember his name, I'll post it.

It's not from the perspective of Cecil 0/10
>>
>>7745007
tbqh I just started delving into it. so I don't really know much about him yet but I thought it would address Cecil's experiences from the actual podcasts, no?

I'm kinda intrigued because I saw some youtube fags recommend it and I though I'd pick it up. not far in yet.

You don't find your life's purpose. You choose your life's purpose.
And guess what, that purpose doesn't have to be singular.
