What books do you buy your friends when you're trying to get them into reading?

I've decided I'm going to be that friend that gifts books only for birthdays/christmas.

>Hemingway for the boy that wants to become a man
>Secret History for the girl just starting uni
>Prince of Thorns for the guy that thinks GoT is good

>inb4 penguin

Original beat up copy for reference

I mean, it was a terrible book regardless of that, but why would the author try to moralize at the last minute?

Do you guys ever fear that reducing a complex character arch into three lines of greentext is damaging our ability to have actual discussion? The question has now been framed so that we are not discussing Raskolnikov's internal flaws, but rather whether or not he is a "beta pleb".

Anyway I think that Raskolnikov was destined from the start to fail to be an extraordinary man. He had to artificially create a climate of poverty and hopelessness (by isolating himself from his friends and refusing to try to earn money) in order to justify his act to himself. Because he was unable to commit the murder outside of these circumstances, he could not possibly be extraordinary.

How do they actually teach literature in uni? How the hell do they teach books so that it becomes a university course?

I've only taken an English class in high school, and it was mostly about how to write letters and stuff. When we read a book all we had to was talk about the main plot and characters, we didn't have to go "deep" like I assume they do in uni. I don't really know what goes on up there.

For starters, look at the Comparative Literature syllabus on the website of your nearest university. I'd post a real answer but I'm on dodgy mobile and frankly don't know if this thread is even deserving of one.

i have simple question here: famous big novels are researched really well. is there any website or kind of literature which would show where they are quoting from? which parts of the bible are around in jane austen? what carmina and books of the iliad are cited by the characters of samuel butler? what jazz songs are around in the great gadsby? if you don't know a place like this, online or elsewhere, do you believe it's necessary?

There will always be a stickler who find something unreal / not accurate about whatever you've written. If you're not too far off the mark no one cares. The hardest part would be the dialogue and how characters naturally are within your time setting. You need help though, most big novels nowadays have research teams. I wouldn't go too hard for the first try because it'll take you years. Realism's finished now anyway.

What did you mean by this? Is it finished like Rock is finished or is it finished like Poetry?

How to find science fiction that isn't shit ?

I'll try to explain specifically what turned me off in the few books of the genre I read since about a year, please give me some books that aboid these perceived flaws and discuss

>Rendez-vous with rama
My favourite of the bunch but the dialogs are really B-grade and are full of humorous bits that really don't fit in with the narrative, also the characters are really bland and are basically heroes without flaws that just do anything when convenient. Also I didn't really liked the progression of the ships exploration, it was like people advancing in a jungle tediously with an intrigue that would have been better suited to a crime novel which distracted from the mysterious nature of the ship they are exploring

>Canticle for Leibowitz
Plain boring and quite badly written (even though I read a translation so I can't be really assertive), even though the themes of the book looked promising

>Schild's Ladder
This read like a textbook with really little room for intrigue and characters, most of the actual action is protag discussing matters to agree on what they can do then the author describes the scientific advance that magically comes to advances the plot

I read Foundation some time ago which I really liked even though it's probably more of a space opera. I couldn't finish even the first Dune as I was disappointed by the tedious worldbuilding. I enjoy the poetic material by Lovecraft, I enjoyed American Gods and some stuff that is sometimes labeled as literary sci-fi (The Glass Bead Game by Hesse and The Glass Bees) but I don't think that those could actually be called scifi. So I guess what I want is hard scifi that doesn't sound too pedagogical and can actually build compelling characters that are not just convenient shells just there as a device for the author to explain his pet theoremas ? Anyway recommend me stuff I guess

Has anyone here read any good Australian literature? As someone from Australia, all the aus-lit I seemed to read in high school was about aborigines and was boring af

>>

Yeah I don't understand why but Australian lit is completely limited to Aboriginal shit or WW1 books.

My goal is to write a novel about life in Townsville that portrays the place in its truest light. Racism will play a large part but it will be presented objectively to show how little it really matters one way or the other.
>>
What do you mean it's about Abos? You mean like how in America cowboys/settlers vs Indians was often wrote about, or just the life and times of Abos?
>>
Voss by Patrick White I believe is Australian.
