How long do you guys read a day? I feel like 2 hours before bed isn't enough.
An hour today, mainly because it wasn't very interesting, I usually do it during the morning for an hour and about 3-4 after lunch. Never really feel like it after dinner, you should step it up
Depends. Can just be like one hour to the whole day.
I take a lot of breaks though because reading for too long gives me horrible eye strain
I read a book a day (basically just the summaries and analysis on sparknotes and wiki)
what do you want me to ask him?
Why do you suck so hard?
Ask him what DFW smelled like
>Dear Mister "I'm Too Good To Call Or Write My Fans",
This will be the last package I ever send your ass
It's been six months and still no word, I don't deserve it?
I know you got my last two letters, I wrote the addresses on 'em perfect
>So this is my cassette I'm sending you, I hope you hear it
>I'm in the car right now, I'm doing 90 on the freeway
>Hey Tommy, I drank a fifth of vodka,
>You dare me to drive?
>You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night"
>About that guy who could a saved that other guy from drowning
>But didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?
>That's kinda how this is, you could a rescued me from drowning
>Now it's too late, I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm drowsy
>And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call
>I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall
>I love you Thomas, we coulda been together, think about it
>You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it
>And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it
>I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me
>See Thomas, shut up bitch! I'm tryin' to talk!
>Hey Pinecone, that's my girlfriend screamin' in the trunk
>But I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you
>'Cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too
>Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now
>Oh shit, I forgot, how am I supposed to send this shit out?
What did he mean by this?
is rap superior to poetry?

Hi Dave.
Do I hate Ignatius because he reminds me so much of myself or because he is designed that way by the author?
>>8353222
you shouldn't hate him. you shouldn't hate yourself. and you especially shouldn't hate those trips
>>8353228
Well, hate might be too strong of a word. I pity him in an agressive way.
He fills the same purpose as holden caulfield, but for adults
Are there any fantasy novels with female protagonists where they're not some kind of edgy assassin, constantly in danger of getting raped or a victim of arbitrary injustice?
All I can think of is the Dark Materials series and Sabriel by Garth Nix. They're more aimed more YA though
>>8353211
The Scar, Un Lun Dun and Embassytown by China Mieville
Witches books by Terry Pratchett
Howl's Moving Castle and House of Many Ways by Diana Wynne Jones
Dear /lit/,
What's the point?
May as well.

What does /lit/ think about Michael Crichton?
>>8353096
Not a particularly good writer, but he captured modern nightmares in a remarkable way. His loss is a shame.
>>8353096
I like him. He guarded us against scientism.
Sadly it was not enough.
>>8353096
He's an opinionated crumudgeon
This might be a bit of a strange thread, so bear with me.
I'm looking for some modernist books, not in the sense of modernist literature, but in the sense of aesthetics, if that makes sense.
I read part one of the New York Trilogy by Paul Auster but this was more conceptually modernist, which is appreciable, but I can easily find without making a thread here. I'm looking for fiction that represents the modernist aesthetic in it's image rather than it's concept.
Do you know of any books that fill this criteria?
Also, if you know some good non fiction about modernism then by all means post that here.
Read Raymond Chandler.

Thanks, just bought The Long Goodbye and The Big Sleep
is this the first known work of literary postmodernism?
loaded question
Careful with these big words, kiddo.
>>8353059
>experimentation with form
>metafiction
>intertextual reference
>bridging of high and low culture
>skepticism of metanarratives
Can you ever go wrong with these? Any poor translations in their selection? They are a good price in my country and I might pick up some.
I have multiple Oxford classics
(Divine comedy, Finnegans Wake, Walden, The Koran, old hardcover of Madame Bovary etc.). The new editions are great, very good translations and supplementary material, I buy them if they are available.
>>8353033
I find them a better alternative to the likes of Penguin or Wordworth, at least the spines don't go to shit easily, very sternly built books.
Generally fine.
For philosophy I'd usually go with Hackett tho
Hey /lit/, anybody here ever read two novels at the same time?
>>8352879
lol
Right eye nonfiction, left eye fiction. I thought everyone did this.
>>8352883
>not left eye nonfiction
I want facile mainstream stooges off my /lit/
Looks like Finnegans Wake is translated to Spanishand it's fucking expensive.
Has anyone read it?
>>8352856
That cover makes me want to kill myself.
How the fuck do you translate the wake tho? Isnt this like sacrilege or something
It's just the original with added tildes
There was so much hype for this, but 50pp in and its the most autistic thing I've ever read and that includes the critique threads on here. Is this the state of post-Lin hipster fiction?
>50pp
>pp

>>8352802
>There was so much hype for this
was there?
