I think it'd be nice to have a thread where we talk about the craft of writing.
Do you write every day? What are your writing habits like? I've seen people who write 1,000 words a day no matter what; anyone here do something like that?
What's been the biggest source of improvement in your writing skills? Do you read books on writing, or just learn through practice?
Anyone here participate in writing groups or workshops?
There's a workshop of sorts on /lit, in the form of the critique thread. People regularly share their writing and receive feedback of dubious quality. Still, I find it more productive than threads like this one, which usually just attract armchair writers and editors who like to talk about their work but rarely put their words where their ideas are.
Not to bash your intentions or anything, but I've seen a lot of threads like these that don't really go anywhere.
I try to write everyday, even if I only have shit to write about.
Reading a lot is essential, of course.
I want to live in a house with other writers. I want to drink with them all and turn the building into a temple

What are your favorite short stories?
Is Borges the master of the short story format?
>be Uruguayan
>never read any Borges
I think Sabato is the best Uruguayan writer anyway

this
Why did he use hyphens instead of quotation marks?
1. french
2. looks less cluttered, apparently
In orginal Ulysses manuscript he used '~' and '#' in place of the letters 's' and 'h'. Editors wanted to use quotations as well but thats where he drew the line.

Literal fucking gibberish, who takes this garbage seriously?
You just aren't in the mindset. That's fine. Don't need to sperg out for no reason.

I've been reading this book for almost 6 months. I was excited to read it at first, but it got bland pretty quickly. Should I keep going if I'm about halfway through?I'm about to finish the Airborne Toxic Event section
I was thinking of reading Crime and Punishment next, though I never got around to finishing The Idiot. I only read occasionally.

It didn't age well. You've probably grown up with popular culture that made the same points, etc.

Just drop this garbage and read Infinite Jest. It's basically Delillo, but with blackjack and hookers.
Yeah, that book is disappointing. From what I've read about it, Mao II seems more up to speed.
But, really nigga, 6 months and you aren't even done? Maybe it's time for a new hobby.
I can't help but get annoyed at how shitty the writing is in a lot fantasy novels
is there any fantasy novel/series out there that doesn't dedicate 50 pages to the description of belt buckles or have cringy cliche'd dialogue?

What was the deal withlittle Severian?was he just a red herring?
is this worth reading as someone who doesn't particularly enjoy fantasy books?
>>8344161
It's not strictly fantasy. I would call it "theological science fiction".
And it's leagues above any other fantasy novel
>>8344161
It's fantasy at times, sometimes goes into SF.
Still, being "fantasy / SF" is not what defines the book. It's pretty philosophical and discusses some interesting themes. It feels more like the Bible than flippin' Lord of the Rings.
Severian can get really rambly at times though. But you'll learn to live with it. Sometimes it's funny like whenhe asked Agia if she wants to hear a story he discussed with Thecla, Agia says no but Severian tells the story anyway because he wanted to hear it one more time. He can get really autistic.

How do I start reading more?
Also wondering about this, I study full time 8-17, sometimes an additional 2h a day, go home, cook food, go running 3 days a week. Weekends I hang out with my gf going to the theatre or museums and stuff. I even don't own a TV and I barely manage to squeze in 30 pages a day which allows me to read like 1 book per month.
Public transport is book-reading time for me (~2 hours per day). I don't take my car on purpose
>>8342069
I read on the journey to and from work. Takes me 1 1/2 hrs each way on the bus so I usually get 40-50 pages a day.

Read up on mu'tazila school of Islam
They were basically enlightened as fuck
Didn't care for Quran and favored rationality and reason, nowadays 'mu'tazilite' is used as a pejorative word for moderates by the ISIS folks

>mu'tazila school of Islam
Thanks lad. Why don't they make a comeback? For moderates in Turkey and Syria n shit it must be quit tempting to claim to follow that ancient school while us it to bring moderate progress:
Does that make sense?
