I know very few other people who read seriously or regularly. My one close friend who does reads primarily non fiction. We discuss subjects more than specific books. Usually Arabic history and classical archaeology. We both read Georges Roux's Ancient Iraq when I bought it at a flea market a couple of weeks ago, so I guess we talked about that a bit.

I can talk a lot about Unbound by Meredith Noone, but only because it's the most recent thing I've read.

Following that, I can discuss The Diving-Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby, because it's the second most-recent thing I've read.

Any books further back than that have become a blur and I'd have to go get them and read them again to have anything useful to say.

I'm a passive fucker that reads without analyzing themes on the subject. The only exceptions to this rule exist in the form of fanfiction.

I agree with your assessment of his reactions to feminism, but do you think entire undergrad classes should be dedicated to Marxist, feminist, and queer readings of classic works? It doesn't make much sense to me. Why should literature be the safe haven of radical social leftists? That makes me fearful of literature's future - I mean the fact that the "readers" or "judges" of the quality of a work have such agendas.

I wasn't so delusional to believe she was the one (if there could be) but I lent one of my favorite books out by one of the most prestigious evolutionary biologists of our time to this chick that studies Chemistry at Stanford thinking she would have a profound revelation or it would at least provoke some kind of interesting dialogue between our two backgrounds (my background being from a squalor and poor upbringing) but it's been over a month now and she hasn't even read half of it (and it's such a short read). Instead, she's blowing me off, out partying with some sorority chicks and prep-school douchebags getting wasted, convincing herself that she's soul-searching. It's so fucking tragic that this is the American young-female condition, but it's so common. Anyways, I'm waiting another day before pestering the shit out of her till I get my book back cause I don't like leaving this shit hang loose.

It's hard to get poetry published if you're new.
You should try and get feedback on it before you submit; generally websites will reject you without saying why other than "not what we had in mind."
Don't post your poetry here. I haven't read any decent poetry on lit ever. A bunch of try yards afraid of contemporary poetry that ham fistedly go for depth and sacrifice any aesthetic quality or just just bad writers.

Feedback from professors and some good writer friends is how I've gotten poetry published. It's a necessity. Good luck, my friend. And don't be afraid of the contemporaries! There doesn't need to be a strict rhyme scheme or meter to make a poem a poem.

The cluster of black vigils in a white plain was all there was in my mind. I weaved that sweater I've never weaved before with blood on my hands. That is what it was, a abnormally bad human at motor skills. But I didn't sweat, I just stayed on my seat, and kept weaving the sweater.
What was the meaning of those vigils I wondered, but weary with the weaving and wandering; faltering into observation, yet more of a contemplation, a form of admiration of indifference.
How would've I ever known.
The black vigils were notes to a white pentagram, and the blood on my hands were humble sounds into the naught.
I weaved but weary music into a plain world.
That music will never hear herself.

Me too man. For me it's McDonalds and walking around at 11PM leering at underage girls and imagining what it would like like if they were sitting down on a rimseat positioned over my head. I have to imagine really weird specific shit because I'm so deadened to the basics that some part of me just tunes out if I try to imagine them. If I just look at some girl's ass, it doesn't click. I have to throw a fucking rimseat in there so my imagination actually starts chugging and imagines her labia peeling apart as her legs spread.
