have noticed lots of people saying things like metaphysics is dead, metaphysics is astrology, etc. can someone please explain?

Some (severely uninformed) people like to think of metaphysics as a bygone relic of supernatural medieval thought, when it is quite clearly the opposite. Developments in science have made astrology and alchemy redundant, but metaphysical questions have not simply disappeared in the same way. I honestly cannot think of one metaphysical problem, traditional or otherwise, that has been solved by advances in physics or some other branch of science. I think it comes from some odd association people make between what was once known as natural philosophy and metaphysics.

How was Kant uninformed ?
>>
>>8391451
He wasn't uninformed. He didn't demonstrate that "doing" metaphysics is impossible, but established clear boundaries and methods in its practice. The synthetic a priori IS metaphysics.

What is some literature that I can read that deals in the matter of change, and maybe moving away and starting over completely, totally alone. Themes of isolation? Maybe alienation? These are only suggestions.

ITT your favorite Books and why you hate women.

My favorite book is Lord of the Flies and I hate women because of their shameless exploitation of the sexual revolution, which they blew out of proportion thanks to their many beta providers and inherently degenerate nature. It has been over 50 years ago, yet you're still using it as an excuse to be controlling whores ALL THE TIME: the insane manipulation of media, the casual sex, the atrocities you're committing against mankind with the rights men GAVE you thanks to your beta "friends" in the Western world.
Everyone knows what you're doing and you've been doing in these 50 years, the only reason this spiral of silence still exists today is because you'd be called a sexist, a virgin, you'd be be ostracized from society.
Can you imagine a male whore being excused because 90 years ago a woman attempted to hurt his whore feelings after making a poor decision? It would be inexcusable, but then again sluts have their friends in the West who love to increase their infinitesimally tiny chances at having sex by tugging at whore's heartstrings.
I'm fucking sick and tired of your slimeball tactics. If you really have the support of people in the western hemisphere then are you still wasting no effort to influence and manipulate public opinione, sluts?

Imagine a life where you have never been great at anything, never felt the urge to be great at anything, never felt that magnetic admiration to someone who was great at something, wanted to imitate and ultimately defeat him. Just nothing. Literally all you do in life is exist to post on 4chan. Occupy space. pass the time.

You're bored, as usual, posting about your fucking dislikes and not even feeling any kind of happiness from it, just soothing your constant need to be bitter and cunty and petty toward other people. Every single thing you've done in the past year was mundane, shallow, boring. You spent the last six hours reading kinda-interesting plebbit stories about people who made interesting buildings for their populace or some stupid bullshit that you think is interesting and you may say is interesting but you're not really sure if it's really interesting. You're just fucking sitting there, gestating, fermenting, with a moist hole between your ears that guarantees you'll at some point have to get up and move around and perform physical labor to support yourself.

And then you see women, over in some corner, having fun. You've never seen this before. What are they even doing? Instead of their consciousnesses merely sitting in their thick skull and revolving around itself, they are imbuing their conscious energy and intentionality into external objects, crafts, goals, projects. All the bitterness and cuntiness you feel nonstop seems to be absent from them, as they congratulate each other for being victorious, and happily learn from someone who defeated them. These creatures are truly content to be alive. They have found purpose in a purposeless universe.

And your gaze turns back on itself, on your self, and you realise you've never had that. You can never have it. So you sit down, you post on 4chan, and you fucking ruin your life, the whole fucking thing. The five seconds of attention you get will be worth destroying it.Because you're failure OP.

Just finished this book

I fucking loved it. I read through it first quickly and now I've just started my proper read-through.

Anyone else loved these books? I read Tai-pan to shreds, then I think I read Gai-jin next. I'm no weaboo, but I loved his style of storytelling. The whole east meets west thing is rich as fuck.

Has anyone read King Rat? I think that's what I'll go for next.

You must watch the miniseries with Richard Chamberlain. It's wonderful.
>>
>>8391347

is that the tai-pan miniseries?

Only thing is the dirk struan was such a powerful character in the books i couldn't see them doing him justice on film. How do you think they did?

I read that the film adaption of shogun was pretty poorly received. I would honestly love a remake, but perhaps a miniseries is a better format for these kinds of books.

If you liked Shogun, then you might like Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, though it's not from the perspective of a foreigner.

After finishing my M. A. in comparative literature (or "litteraturvitenskap" as we call it here in Norway) and having written on my own for years, I decided to apply for a writing academy.

Since my fellow students were far less practiced, I was easily able to sufficiently impress my professors (most of whom are esteemed writers) for them to arrange for me receive several stipends, so that I shall not have to starve, and for a year the keys to an apartment owned by the national writer's guild in the middle of Oslo.

For the last eleven weeks I have isolated myself there, having groceries delivered to my door by godtlevert.no every morning, while, under a very strict schedule, trying to complete a debut which I can only hope will glimmer at all in the shadow of such masterful literature as Knausgård's recent, brilliant hexology My Struggle.

Have any other aspiring writers attempted anything similar, viz. isolating themselves for a long period of time to write?

On a related note, are 4chan and darknet mainstream now, as Ellis postulates?
>>

4chan is mainstream. I doubt the average person knows what darknet is. Warren Ellis is always a fun read. Most of the stuff in this book is based off the subcultures Wired magazine asked him to write about.

I'm finally setting about tackling Kant systematically.

I've read the Prolegomena, and I have a reasonable knowledge of transcendental idealism, post-Kantian Idealism, and German philosophy and the history of philosophy in general. I sort of know the gist of Kant's ideas and his legacy without ever having really read him, like I think a lot of people do. But I feel confident that I can hack away at it for real now.

Can anyone recommend some commentaries and interpretations, whether they should be read before, alongside, or during the CPR? I'm thinking of reading Kemp Smith's commentary for tradition's sake, then Rosenberg's _Accessing Kant_ which seems interesting (and more importantly gentle). Then Allison, Strawson, and maybe another? Or is this list shitty?

After this I'm thinking of moving on to the standard Fichte, Jacobi, Schelling, Hegel, late Schelling, and so on.

Just finished reading the first critique, plan on moving to the second.

The biggest thing really is to know the context, and the aims for which it is being written. So a quick reading of Hume and Descartes, reasonable knowledge of Leibniz, and so on. Honestly once you know Kant's scope of the project I feel there isn't much need of commentaries. People say the writing is terrible but the Transcendental Aesthetic is pretty straightforward, and once you get going into the Transcendental Analytic then you start to get a feel for the writing.

I used the meiklejohn translation if anyone is wondering. I don't have any personal experience with other translations, but I have heard good things about the Smith version.

Also quick side note: probably the most difficult part of the critique for me was Kant's terminology that he used. It seemed that he either skipped defining some of his vocabulary, or in many cases when he does define certain words the definition he gives is just as obscure as the context he uses them in. So I'd recommend just finding a pdf of the "Kant Dictionary" by Howard Caygill on google. He explains the definitions of Kant's terminology, and some of the significance and explanations of certain sections of his work. That's about the only companion I used

Eh, I've tried, but I've never really got into it. I don't get how anyone has the time to seriously document their everyday lives in any proper systematic way.

It's always something I've aspired to do, because it's undeniably useful for sorting through shit, but it just takes so long if you take it seriously and do more than just write down what happened to you (actual analysis etc.)

I only write an entry after some important event, and that's about all I can imagine doing practically.
>>
>>8391066
I recommend keeping a dream journal. It's annoying to stick to it for a long time, though.
