Just finished this book
I fucking loved it. I read through it first quickly and now I've just started my proper read-through.
Anyone else loved these books? I read Tai-pan to shreds, then I think I read Gai-jin next. I'm no weaboo, but I loved his style of storytelling. The whole east meets west thing is rich as fuck.
Has anyone read King Rat? I think that's what I'll go for next.
You must watch the miniseries with Richard Chamberlain. It's wonderful.

is that the tai-pan miniseries?
Only thing is the dirk struan was such a powerful character in the books i couldn't see them doing him justice on film. How do you think they did?
I read that the film adaption of shogun was pretty poorly received. I would honestly love a remake, but perhaps a miniseries is a better format for these kinds of books.
If you liked Shogun, then you might like Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, though it's not from the perspective of a foreigner.

King Rat is good, but quite different from the others. It's short, and doesn't have the same feel.
I loved Shogun and Tai-Pan. Haven't read any others. Shogun was probably my favorite, close call though.

..and this
Is this high art? Not looking for something like Ulysses but it is not John Green tier is it?

It's somewhat like Scorsese is to movies
It's first and foremost entertainment, but far more subtle and artistically accomplished than Michael Bay-tier stuff
Superior.

Would you say it's James Patterson tier or Conan Doyle tier?
>>8392340
I haven't read Patterson but I'd imagine the latter

you cropped out the raindrop conveniently hitting the hilt

no. It's historical fiction. Competent journeyman prose. I'd put him a little below Patrick O'Brian and Hilary Mantel but above Bernard Cornwell.

No, he meant Shogun. Caused a Sushi-boom in the early 80s US
