The two pink pointy tips on the side? No, it's supposed to be subtly and elongatedly suggestive of something rubbery and black sliding between two tits.

Thank you for finally asking this OP.

Objectively: Cervantes
For Actual Enjoyment: Rabelais

The latter is an underrated champ. Highlights Humanism better anyways.
>>
I preferred Cervantes but I think Rabelais is a better author (I read Rabelais in French and Cervantes through translation so I could be wrong)

Why are you comparing them?

I'm attempting to read this and don't understand any of the tax lingo that's dropped throughout. Do you need familiarity with tax/accounting to understand this book?

You never need to understand any of the technical lingo DFW uses. He probably doesn't either.

going to medal day at macdowell today. michae chabon will be giving the medal to toni. what should i ask her or him afterwards? will try to get pics with them. general thoughts on who is the worse author?
28 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I've only read one book by each.

"Gentlemen of the Road" by Chabon -- absolute trash.

"Beloved" by Morrison -- pretty great, actually.

Ask Chabon what it's like being an author but who's really a Jew. Ask Morrison what it's like being an author but who's really a black.
>>
>>8396242
look up chabon's sexuality.

meant to read beloved before today but didnt get around to - will definitely check it out if she gives a good acceptance speech
>>
She's genuinely good, it's not her fault she gets overhyped in academia like some messianic figure. And she's more of a good writer than a good artist.

>tfw you think you're righter but everything you ever write is based off the absurdity of existence and attempting to reveal absurdity in everything and induce existential vertigo, but it never works because the brain and words themselves are hard wired to give mathematical meanings.

Fucking dick lit. I really, no, fuck, I can't. It's like, sometimes I write stuff, but once and a while I just decide that I will stop writing for a while. I think this is one of those times. Usually I write a lot, everyone on lit says that my writing fucking sucks, although a couple people told me thought my writing is enjoyable even though it's "not good". I mean, I don't even know anymore lit, I wonder if this shit kills my creativity, you know what I mean? I want to be a creative person, but I just think that my creativity died some time back in high school. I don't like drawing anymore, I don't like playing music, I realize slowly that I suck at writing too. I wish everyone else would just kill themselves, I fucking hate all of you, I hate you pieces of shit so much. You're a bunch of assholes but yet for some reason I still end up going onto this forum.

What is it about the Silmarillion that people find appealing?

>>

I like history books and fantasy books, the Silmarillion is an historical fantasy book.
>>
It's intricate as fuck.
It lends gravity to beloved characters from LotR.
It's a case study in myth.
Like any other myth, it's easy to get lost in.
>>
It has a cool name
It also already has a "The" before its cool name like it's something important, without even needing to be translated into French

Are there any books that are like the movies Paprika and Perfect Blue, or Serial Experiments Lain, with that whole what is the real reality? sort of thing going on? I also like this scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJtl95R3tf8

Philip KKK Dick

Perfect Blue is based on a novel by Takeuchi. It's a ballet dancer instead of a singer iirc.

I don't read a book or movie after I have already seen one that the other is based off of.

So, I'm attending a short story lessons (EU, not English native speaker) and I'd appreciate your feedback (or assumptions OP is gay) regarding my plot.

I like to write social realism. Harsh, grim stuff. Recently our teacher wanted us to write a sci-fi stories involving rogues/renegades/smugglers.

After much struggle I came to this: I want to take Han Solo/that guy from Firefly/other generic clean adventurers who brak the law and taint them. I've been thinking about Alien 4 as inspiration. Smugglers, smuggling people.

So here's my idea: Captain is on ships bridge (grimdark Alien like setting) and new crewmember, very efeminine/young/innocent girl is talking to him. He asks her if she has cooled off (she obviously had a fit and was maybe incarcerated) and she says she did. She asks him why he drinks so much. Most of story is him explaining to her his life. How he tried to be good, but was poor and he had to make harsh deals again again and again. Had left many people hurt or dead. Had a chance at calm life but ... the call of Deep space had found him again. She says he should "let people go" but he says its too late. That it was probably always too late.
Another crewmember peeks into captain's quarters and says the'yll soon dock. Captain strolls into cargo hold, inspecting hundreds of sleeping pods they have nicked from some cruise ship and will sell to some organ-harvesting company.
Girl was a firgure of his imagination, his conciense, trying to illuminate the lyfestyle that seems glamorous, but in hte end, hollows out a man.

what do you guys think?

It certainly is a grim story you've come up with. I would suggest that you make the girls existence ambiguous otherwise it may seem a little corny.
But I would mainly suggest that you think about what you're trying to convey in your story, I know it's only short but so are most parables,
Does the captain represent or embody the darker aspects of mankind? What motivates him? Why is he involved in this kind of thing?

Hope that helps

Fuck this shit lit. Fuck this god damn bullshit. I want to read a book that's actually fun. I was just trying to read Hunger by Knut Hamsun, STILL, and it's just not fun. What's a book that's actually fun to read? Gimme something weird and cool and FUCKED UP. I really liked The Wasp Factory. I mean like, gimme a book where cool shit actually happens. You know what was another book I liked? In The Miso Soup by Ryu Mirakami.

The two books you mentioned are good but do you absolutely need an endless procession of wacky cuhrazy shocking acts and twists to have fun? Plenty of people have "fun" reading books outside the boundaries of your rigid tastes.

Hunger marked the beginning of literature fully exploring the interior of the modern mind. It's the first voice of its kind. Plus it's pretty short. Like a two day thing if you just give it some faith. The protagonists from Hunger and Notes from Underground are basically /lit/posters 19th century edition. If only you aimed at deriving aesthetic pleasure from truth and the keen use of language rather than edge-of-your-seat thrills! Video games and movies do the latter just as well as literature, with visual and tactile aids I might add, but not so much the former. Literature far surpasses the visual arts in the former aim.

Is it worth pursuing a Masters in Writing or something similar? Considering Journalism as well. Would I be better off developing my writing on my own or would an MA program help me? I have a BA in TV, Radio and New Media (I know).

>>
>>8395894
I have a similar situation, I think I'm choosing not to pursue it because all my writing profs so far have been biased beyond belief and that kind of restrictive environment won't help me. But who knows, you might get good profs who actually help you out.
>>
>>8395894
Submit to lower tier periodicals first at least. You're likely to get published and it's good to have that base of work and experience for such courses.
>>
>>8395894
No, no, no. If you're going to write, go write and submit. MA in Writing, good grief.

Are you autistic?
>>
Historically men have shied away from embracing their natural passions and urges and indeed their own natures due their own egotism and desire to rule all things including themselves. Fear of their hearts having a greater sway over them than their minds, has, in Dorian's view lead man to neglect the appreciation of beauty and therefore left their innate aesthete impulses in a crude and base state.

What's the difference between analytic and continental philosophy? It seems nobody can agree on a textbook definition. What does it mean when an university is focused on either of these camps, and how would the curriculum differ?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8395843
Analytic philosophy is autistic and poinltess.

Continental philosophy is profound and enobling.
>>
Analytic philosophy is interested in establishing firmly the limits of language can say. Continental philosophy is interested in exploring the no-man's land of what language can't say.
>>
>>8395843
Analytic wud have more logic courses and modal logic. Theyd have phil of mind as well as courses on linguistics. Aside from that id expect courses on the typical analytics like russell quine kripke and their ideas. In both you gon get the typical philosophers of the past dough like descart and all that jazz. Thats all i can really think off
