why did he booze it up so much
>>8418188
He had a romantic view of writing that necessitated smoking and drinking. Despite /lit/ hating him, he was everything that they try to be personified.
Because he wanted to
>>8418205
What makes you think /lit/ smokes and drinks?
I was thinking about getting a typewriter. Do they help you write well? Which one do you have?
i have a portable underwood but i dont even know how to use it lol
>>8418186
Where did you get it?
I have a 2 royals and 2 smith coronas, the Royal portable is my favorite. Typing on them feels great.
I don't know if they help me to write well but I tend to just delete everything I write on my pc so I guess there is that. I just stick everything I write on my typewriter into a binder.
I became an avid reader like three months ago and I can't stop. I stopped watching tv and I don't spend much time on 4chan anymore.
Here's how I did it.
-Remember the average person reads like zero books a year. If you read 5 pages a day, you are 5 pages above the average person
-Don't force yourself to read. Commit to read 5 pages a day. I swear after three days you'll feel like reading more and after a month or so you should be reading 50-100 pages a day for pleasure
-Read various books at the same time. When I grab a difficult book or one that makes me sleepy I grab another and switch. This should refresh your head. Keep them thematically different. I read economics and fiction.
-It isn't a race. Reading slowly won't make you sleepy that fast. Try to acknowledge what books are for you to read fast and which aren't.
-Buy the physical copies. When you get the books from your own money you'll feel the need to read them to avoid the feel of wasting your money.
-Start with books highly discussed here so you feel motivated to discuss.
>counting the number of pages you read
I seriously hope you guys batting cage Costanza

The average American reads 5 books a year; only like 25% don't read at all. Where do people get the notion that no one reads?
>>8418164
if half the anons on /lit/ followed this meme itd probs be a better place. of course, someone makes the post im making every time, so just meme me up boys.
Anyone else here stupid and frustrated with their mental capacity?

If Joyce had take a medical degree in Paris and become a doctor, what specialisation would he have gone into?
Colorectal is the mostly bum stuff btw.
Pharmaceuticals
doubt he would have wanted to get his hands dirty when it came down to it

Friend of mine said the third one's pretty dope if you like the Uffizi.
Read lit bruh
First two are good - the last two are shit.
I'm trying to come up with an analogous activity to viewing/collecting childporn.
Men view child porn because
1. it is a forbidden fruit and the government restricting it only makes it more valuable and more sought after
2. Sex requires the male to be mentally dominant and the idea of sex with submissive (mentally and physically) children more easily allows a man to be mentally dominant and maintain high self esteem in sexual relationships
What are some activities that would be similar to collecting/viewing child porn in these aspects without being related to child porn at all

I tried to find CP when I was an underage lad because I thought it would be 13 year olds fucking, I was very wrong.
Summarize how reading/doing philosophy has affected your life please.
i liked things, now i don't
>>8417939
Made me realize how fucked everything is, so now I'm not a dumb animal bumbling around. That's either a plus or a negative depending on how you take it.
>>8417951
To me it's a negative. Like we are wasting life being these self-denying servants to the truth. Knowing the truth won't make the dumb monkey shit all around us go away either. Makes me scream sometimes..
When I was young I used to read loads, I was going through stuff like Robinson Crusoe at eight and went through countless books every year.
Nowadays I hardly read at all, most books I start I get about a fifth of the way through and then inadvertently give up.
Are there any methods I can use to read more, or is it simply a case of setting aside time and willpower?
>>8417927
Stop posting here so much.
More importantly, get as far away from your computer/laptop/mobile phone as possible.
The second point is key.
Dude just go through wattpad accounts. They usually have short stories you can read. A lot of them are really good.
>>8417936
I see a lot of people recommend short stories for ADHD people who can't read anymore. But I think a better solution is to read long books. 500+ page books with great characters. Something like Anna Karenina, The karamazov brothers, The count of monte cristo, etc. Long books that get them involved and want to read more. If they read short stories they won't develop an attention span.
what would the cool bandana man think of his meme status if he was still around? would he even be a meme if he was still alive?
taking postmodern novel classes this semester. i'll go to the class wearing a bandana just to fuck with the professor.

But he's still around and he's still a meme
Nietzsche Übermensch is obviously supposed to be one individual with with totalitarian power right?
We've all been sold the idea that Nietzsche meant that any ordinary human could become the superman (aka self-help bullshit) and that the Nazi's twisted the interpretation but, to my eyes, Hitler IS the Nietzschean overman. Nietzsche is asking you, the reader, to sacrifice your life to bring forth the leader of mankind that will create a higher human existence through his omnipotent 'will' alone. (aka his goals, his desires, his ambitions).
Even going beyond good and evil is necessary because slave morality, which is the morality of the masses, will oppose master morality every time. Thus, we need to go past good and evil aka slave morality to allow the Ubermensch to have free reign of his 'will' over the world; whatever it may be. (eg. commit genocide without need to moralise for the sheep and acting with impunity.)
To read the book any other way than as an apology for Totalitarianism seems like madness to me, but my SJW professors, who all love Nietzsche, are telling me I'm reading it wrong and that his sister corrupted the text. I don't fucking think I am reading it wrong. Nietzsche expressed similar thoughts in other books.
I think the Nazi's had the right interpretation of the Übermensch all along.
ps. I am not an alt-right nationalist.
>>8417918
Übermensch does not need to impose power on anything, because his Will is enough. No governor ever could be übermensch, unless they got on their knees and lived like animals in a cave, like Nebuchadnezzar
>>8417923
>Übermensch does not need to impose power on anything, because his Will is enough.
if people worship the Übermensch in his totality then he need not impose any power on anyone. His followers will carry out his absolute Will without question like the God Emporer.
The same sentiments are being made when Stannis says:
>Any man who must say 'I am the king' is no true king.
If Magneto magically became Princeps of the U.S., he would never need to impose his power on any normal human ever again because his 'Will' WILL be done by others.
>>8417918
2/10 bait
Will continental philosophy ever recover from this?
>>8417877
I don't think that picture ever damaged it tbqhwyfam
Have Analytic philosophers ever proven anything?
The only Analytic I know is Russell who spent his life trying to prove something from the ground up without having anything to show for it.
>Why would the history of an idea be relevant to the idea itself?
It takes a special kind of inept fool to ask a question like this.
I don't believe that women and blacks aren't capable of producing great literature. does that make me weird? I have 8-10 books written by blacks and almost 20 by women. how many do you guys have? let's crush this meme once and for all.
>>8417857
I have a copy of Octavia Butler's Fledgling and Xenogenesis kicking around. Half-read the first, haven't touched the latter (gift from a Mormon).
Tons of women in my anthologies, but I'll be arsed if I can find a standalone book written by a woman in my collection.
Would Paolo Bacigalupi count?
