>Star attraction, movie premieres, sports events, red carpets and gala openings: the eternal war between depth and appearances. But there is no war at all between them, since the purpose of depth is to create a stronger, and thus more beautiful, appearance; to transform itself into appearance. Those who scorn appearances and evangelize depth are precisely those who are incapable of much, if any, depth: the pseudo-intellectuals, which is why it is by no means an accident that all of them are ugly.
>340. Betas follow rules. Alphas make the rules. Sigmas laugh at rules. It is clear which group the philosopher belongs in, and in which he'd like to belong.

We all know that's not Nietzsche.
That is one of the issues I see often in the US and Europe though. With big budget, blockbuster creations came reactionary movements that hated the emphasis on appearance in those grander works.
But it's all a matter of ego / spirit; someone with a healthy ego averts their gaze outwardly, beyond themselves and into the world of appearances, while someone with a weak ego, overly focused on themselves, is still looking for things that are "deep" in order to justify themselves.

Do you write margin notes and scribble in books?
Yes. If I don't highlight an entire paragraph and scribble next to it "symbolism," how would I remember that the passage was being symbolic? It allows me to engage with the text.

I swear all my highschool books were like this
new into /Lit/
one question, please be honest.
Why do u hate each other? analytical vs continental?
i mean it, cant u just contemplate both slopes?
There's no way you could know that if you're new.
>>8417174
Continentals think anything with numbers or logical notation is useless and not philosophy. Analytics think that all continentals are just poorly disguised charlatans wrapping their nonsense in obfuscatory language.
Both of them are wrong.
The culture of this board hosts many people who in the real work are probably regarded as intellectuals however out of them only 1-2 out of 10 are. When all these psudo-intellectuals come on /lit/ and then an another psudo-intellectual calls them out they begin a horrid circle jerk of 'IM BETTER YOUR STUPID" kinda crap.
Of course there are still the small amount of actual people who know what they're talking about (spoiler im not one of them) so overall the board is probably the most intellectual since its not summer in here all year round

What is the difference between Science Fantasy and Science Fiction?
And which is pic related?
not a great definition but this is what i've hashed out for myself:
science fantasy "reads" like fantasy, mostly because technology rather inconspicuously takes the place of magic since the workings are not explained in detail or even really brought into question by the societies in those books in the first place
haven't finished dune but it seems to fit the bill
>>8417158
In my mind, Science Fantasy would be a book like Dune.
Whereas Science Fiction would be a book like the Martian.
Science Fiction is where they try to realistically elaborate on the world such as how it could exist logically using a basis of real science and technology.
Even if there is technology in a Sci-Fi that doesn't exist, it is made on an understanding of real science and tries to truly make you immersed in how the world works.
Science Fantasy puts a lot of that behind to favor more traditional fantasy plot. It's fantasy set in a technological world but may also have a magical / mystical element to it. A quick comparison I see a lot is Star Wars v.s. Star Trek.
Star Wars is obviously a science fantasy, it's more traditional in its story and of course has the mystical element of the force. Star Trek, while not a perfect science fiction, tries to make a more grounded and realistic world where the technology is as much a character as any other.
How do I into Spinoza?
Is it necessary that I read Descartes works first? I've just read opinions of him from other philosophers
nobody reads spinoza, especial not titans of german letters
read infinite jest instead. more insightful
Yeah you should read Descartes. Also look into Giordano Bruno.
Can anyone recommend me a decent Arab / Muslim political philosopher?
(I'm not being intentionally ironic, and ignore the slight oxymoron).

Pic related popped up a few times in a book of Middle Eastern primary source snippets I recently read. It looked interesting, and valuable for the field, but I haven't read it yet.
Are knowledge and culture unnatural -and ultimately harmful- to people who aren't highly gifted?
Is culture a meme that only breeds try hards or is it something that we should seek to integrate more to society?
Are threads that start with yes or no questions simply a thinly veiled attempt on the OPs part to pass off their opinion as a topic of discussion?
Is the answer to the previous question "yes"?
>>8417024
it depends on wether you think it is or not you moron.
>>8417014
This is actually a surprisingly interesting question. A lot of pretentious people are served badly by the insistence that more people should be held to the standards of high culture.
I'll start with an obvious one.
Never read TFA in high school, but I had to teach it last year. Definitely wanted to kill myself...ayyye.
Fucking The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri - utter shit I tell you. Made me really hate Bildungsroman until I've encountered A Brief Wondrous life of Oscar Wao which was great with all of its reference and the vernacular language. If you've read it, what did you think?
Lord of the Flies
To Kill a Mockingbird
Hobbit + LotR trilogy
As I Lay Dying
Beloved
Animal Farm

Is that "the" shotgun?
Dilettantes vacuously exploit lexicons to extract and manipulate vapid, bumptious appellations, desperately assaying to conceal their genuine temperament. The mere charlatans' compositions bolster dictations which serve solely to create someof the most banal, unaesthetic prose ever witnessed in the postdiluvian epochs of creation, their works congested by proboscidean locutions containing naught but unmeritorious substance.
I not only indict these ignoramuses, but also compel them to excogitate upon the kernels of my contention and thereafter operate in accordance when formulating their proximal oeuvre, lest they come across as pretentious use of sesquipedalianism.
