No memory whatsoever
>13
Puberty starts. Begin to hate myself.
>16
Extraordinarily miserable. I do not talk to anyone other than the brief conversations with strangers in the world of warcraft random dungeon finder. At this point I begin to watch art house films and read literature to compensate for my feelings of inferiority.
>18
I have left secondary school and my spirits are somewhat uplifted. I begin to drift around Skype groups found on various image boards. No meaningful relationships are formed.

I have not yet reached any other milestones.
>>
>10
I never went to a sex ed class, but I had a mother who is a medical doctor. I was given the basic rundown on my near future (puberty) which left me scarred for years. I was obsessed with Pokemon, and just starting to get in to Digimon and Dragonball Z.
>13
Dropped out of high schoool this year. Had a weird time at school while I was there. All of the other kids were trading drugs in the locker rooms and I couldn't really find any friends. I was lonely, bullied, stressed, and eventually it caught up with my health and I left school.
>16
By this stage I'd had epilepsy for two years, and was particularly concerned by it. I cannot recall anything else about this year.
>18
I'm starting to look at universities. By some miracle I have managed to attain the top high school qualification, in spite of working at a snail's pace with correspondence from home.
>20
Dropped out of uni, into a psychiatric hospital, where I stayed 9 months. I tried to kill myself twice while I was there but was interrupted once by a nurse and had an inconvenient seizure the other time.
>21
Left the psychiatric hospital halfway through this year with a "Sorry, we misdiagnosed you and can't actually treat you" and went home to become an extremely anxious recluse.
>23
I was less reclusive and anxious by this stage, and doing some activities outside of the home. I did not find 23 an exciting year to be alive, and just kind of spent most of my time existing. I was on the good meds, though, and got a lot of writing done.
>25
Bad year. Lot of depression and suicidal intentions. Currently trying to find new antidepressant and manage seizures. Not very happy -- no job (too epileptic), nothing really to do. Existence is something to be endured as best as possible until I get cancer or something and can die in a socially acceptable manner.

I am in the middle of freedom and constraint. Sometimes I just want to be naked but I know I can't.
>13
I am firmly within constraint. I do not know how to interact with these people.
>16
I am firmly within freedom. I have finally become happy. I think.
>18
I am now in the middle of freedom and constraint, but the constraints I have are all of my own making and for my own good. I am still happy. I think lots.

This is famous for the author having been paid a 2mil advance, and nothing more. Nobody's read it and nobody cares to.

Meme trash. Grown ups read books that actually have bearing on reality and could teach them a skill that would actually make their life better.

Is it normal to forget everything but a general summary of books you've read a few years after you have read them?

Is there any way to train yourself to remember more for longer?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8423202
Not really.

On Kindle though you can save your fave moments/lines and reflect on them later.

For non-fiction books you should always write notes as you read, otherwise the point of reading them becomes redundant.

Books aren't supposed to be read just once. They are supposed to be read IN FULL once, and then re-visited regularly to refresh your mind, furnish it with beauty, and return it to the upper echelons of human intellect.

God speed.

Thanks for the reassurance, sometimes I'll recall an event from a novel I've read a few years ago. However, I will not be able to accurately recall the events which occured and it worries me.

then open the book again and re-read that part.

I'm going to take a horror literature class that will include "creepypasta" as a modern example. Is this what PhDs actually spend their time writing analyses of?

It's all bullshit. Anyone with a PhD in lit is undoubtedly a layabout bohemian with no work ethic.

Oh that doesn't sound so awful, OP. Haven't you ever read a good creepypasta? Even Slenderman almost got a girl killed (the Wisconsin stabbing.) Anyway, what else would you use for a "modern" representation of horror?

For those of you who study Literature in college/university, how do you integrate secondary reading into your writing?

Whenever I write a paper, I write it up, lazily search online databases for stuff related to the topic/time period, find some stuff the author of a research paper says thats vaugely related, then add it into my essay like 'As Faggot points out, blah blah blah'.

This obviously isn't the proper way to do it, so what is?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
If you have several sources and they are precise enough (actual publications or books, not elements off-handedly attributed to such or such famous source), use endnotes and make it a proper bibliography.
>>
>>8423163
Literally every college student does this.
>>
yeah this is pretty much what i do
ideally you would spend time researching before you begin an argument but due dates usually force students to come up with an argument and then find "sources" that confirm their biasis

Should I attempt to write fiction in English even if it is not my first language?
I know that some people have done it before, but I find it hard to write anything readable - comments regarding my writing often point out that due to the awkwardness in my phrasing it is obvious that English is not my native language and I assume awkward phrasing is not a pleasing thing to read.

Hahaha you're a foriegner get walled bich
>>
You could give it a go and then help a literate native speaker edit it for you. But I don't understand why wou wouldn't write it in your own tongue first.
>>
>>8423161
Why the fuck are you asking anyone if you should attempt to write fiction? Just do it. Everyone sucks when they start out and there are plenty of non English speakers who write brilliantly. What the fuck do you want to hear?

is it sacrilege to chew gum while reading? I find it helps, but do you think it lessens the retainment of the book, or cheapens the experience?

pls respond
>>
Unless the chewing is distracting you I wouldn't worry.

But if you feel like deep-down it is somehow affecting the way you retain what you're reading then maybe you could assess that, but I have no input further.

Hi /lit/,
I have one of these hated "what should I do"-questions. Basically, I feel (literally) interested in philosophy. Expanding my horizon by knowing and evaluating other people's thoughts and ideas seems very desirable. But everytime I start reading philosophical texts my interest fades away and I grab a fiction-book and read it instead. Although different views and opinions interest me, it seems that the lack of impactful applicability and the lesser joy (in comparison to fiction) I derive from reading philosophical texts just makes me lose intrest.

So my question is: Should I stop forcing myself into philosophy or am I just not "in" to it enough to enjoy it.
I have been reading Nicomachean Ethics in a veeery slow pace (finished like 5 fiction books since I started it) and tried to get into The Myth of Sisyphos after enjoying The Stranger. But it never keeps me fascinated.

I would love to hear your opinions. Thanks.

Maybe read philosophical fiction? Zarathustra etc.

Plato's dialogues are essentially that. Read it like a story.
>>
>>8422936
I had the same idea. But that would narrow down my philosophical options to a very small pool of books, or?

And maybe even overview books. (Durant's, Russell's) You can develop your own philosophy without delving so deep into a dying tradition. No real need for source texts. Unless you want to stagger on

Where do you find your ebooks/pdfs?

Since the death of the major torrent sites I've been struggling like hell.

Really wanted to find a copy of Commodore: A Company on the Edge but although I know it's out there somewhere I'm hitting dead ends.

Any ideas where to start such searches, not only for this but for ANY books.
