Write a dystopian story about how the world falls to shit after people read exclusively dystopian fiction and philosophy is kill for decades
>>
Ugh fuck, the future's so shit. I can't believe that 200 years ago we ended up in a dystopian future. Why is life as hard as it is right now? Technology gave us everything, but now we have nothing. We can't eat the computers. Why did no one think of that before... That Day. The SJWs were right.

What are some great poems or passages about madness and mental illness?

O, my good lord, why are you thus alone?

For what offence have I this fortnight been

A banish’d woman from my Harry’s bed?

Tell me, sweet lord, what is’t that takes from thee

Thy stomach, pleasure and thy golden sleep?

Why dost thou bend thine eyes upon the earth,

And start so often when thou sit’st alone?

Why hast thou lost the fresh blood in thy cheeks;

And given my treasures and my rights of thee

To thick-eyed musing and curst melancholy?

In thy faint slumbers I by thee have watch’d,

And heard thee murmur tales of iron wars;

Speak terms of manage [horsemanship] to thy bounding steed;

Cry ‘Courage! to the field!’ And thou hast talk’d

Of sallies and retires, of trenches, tents,

Of palisadoes, frontiers, parapets,

Of basilisks, of cannon, culverin,

Of prisoners’ ransom and of soldiers slain,

And all the currents of a heady fight.

Thy spirit within thee hath been so at war,

And thus hath so bestirr’d thee in thy sleep,

That beads of sweat have stood upon thy brow

Like bubbles in a late-disturbed stream;

And in thy face strange motions have appear’d,

Such as we see when men restrain their breath

On some great sudden hest. O, what portents are these?

Some heavy business hath my lord in hand,

And I must know it, else he loves me not.

Im writing a novella that might end up a graphic novel if my friend is on board.

Here is an exert, What do you think of my prose?

'RANE: ‘I had lost myself in the unconscious and irrational justification for my destructive behavior- a hunger for substance induced somnolence overwhelms me.
And like a primal desire, it rattles at my innermost center.’

So lads, I'm thinking of unironically dabbling in the Greeks but my question is: must I start with Homer? I would much rather start with something lighter- perhaps Hesiod and some plays- but I fear that many paths will lead back to Homer.

If you want to read the Greeks then start with Homer, he is foundational to greek thought.

What does /lit/ think of audiobooks? I just started a free trial with Audible but I am find it really hard to pay attention to the reader half the time. The other half I just find the person's voice or tone when reading to be shit and totally kills my immersion

>>
>>8415324
Unless it's genreshit (in which case you're wasting your money) or something only slightly more involved, you should only listen to audiobooks of things you've actually read at least once.

I haven't listened to a lot, but the Gravity's Rainbow and J R ones are pretty good.
>>
I find it really hard to concentrate... Honestly don't like 'em at all
>>
I enjoy them. I tend to listen to them during household chores and other rote tasks where I can reserve mental focus. I don't care to listen to difficult material in this format. I tried some Adam Smith and Alexis de Tocqueville but I kept wanting to go back over and "re-read" denser passages which doesn't suit the format or what I was otherwise occupied with.

The narrator certainly does make or break the work.

I find that I can listen to something I've already read and pick up detail that I would have skimmed over visually. In this sense, it can be complementary to the written word.

Hey /lit/

Would you be kind to help me, a young plebeian STEMfag about to embark on life's great journeys, get into /lit/erature? Or, more precisely, should I even try to get into books?

My main trouble is that I have rarely found myself enjoying plot in fiction - that peculiar condition of mine pertains not just to books, but also movies and TV shows. As a kid I have watched a lot of cartoons, mostly for their comedic value - I still carry an appreciation for some of the gems produced for Cartoon Network during the 90s (and, in the case of EEnE, the 00s - I especially enjoyed the surreal plots and physics in that show), though I don't watch them anymore except maybe once every few months. I also got through Gravity Falls, which was in my opinion well animated and appealed to my immature longing for a wacky cartoonish world with Jews doing crazy multidimensional sci-fi shit, but once I watched the last episode, I dropped the show completely - I haven't even watched it fully. Heck, I haven't even watched a single Matrix movie in full (mind me, it posed me no obstacle to understand /pol/'s and Reddit's obsession with the red pill)

Regarding books, I'd be hard pressed to actually read anything that puts plot and linguistic aesthetic as its primary asset - my idea of "fun" is browsing Wikipedia articles on any subject of greater or lesser relevance to my daily life - anything from credit cards to relations between Israel and Bangladesh (did you know my country's ID printing company also produced passports for Bangladesh and Armenia?). Aside from assigned reading, textbooks and pop science, some books I remember picking up out of my own volition include 1984, Sophie's World, Gravity's Rainbow and, recently, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Depsite that, as far as I remember, I have always completed every assigned book, sometimes with pain and boredom (70s Eastern Bloc YA-tier books; the bus was blue), and sometimes with large enjoyment, save for the part where you have to read the last 100 pages in one day (The Doll, Crime and Punishment). Now I'm trying hard to get past Reymont's The Peasants (assigned reading of course), yet fail to get any enjoyment or enriching value out of rrading it, just boredom. Sure, he's won a fucking Nobel for the book, and it's a wonderful resource for those interested in village dialects, and a great escape for those yearning for living on the farm, but other than the occasional smirk I get from reading about the goysants' verbal shitposts, it doesn't appeal to me. I feel like I'm wasting my time that I should instead spend on pursuits more deserving of my time, such as: learning chemistry, biology, physics, math, maybe even programming... or going swimming, or lifting. Or improving my second language, which is German,or commiting to a fourth one, like pyccкий, svenska or עברית.

(Continued below)

Pic somewhat related, it's "books" I'd read not only for infornational value but also entertainment

OP part 2:
The reason I bother is because the unspeakable described by many as God provided me with a mind affine to quickly learn and understand abstract concepts; not just math and science, but also grammar and ortography. As nothing in life comes for free, one of the drawbacks I've had to put with is what you call social autism - I'm introverted and very literal minded; I take pleasure in discussing "distant" subjects like science, history, music, psybrology or even politics - and by distant I refer to things that do not pertain directly to what I have actually experienced, which seems to be the topic of choice for most people we would call normies - and find it difficult to handle verbal social play such as friendly, ironic bashing. Whenever talking to people, be it my closest friends or classmates, I tend to exchange factual information without pacing myself in order to keep the other side piqued, as that's the thing I crave as much as most people do with social interaction. Those idiosyncracies of mine likely contribute a lot to why I have no girlfriend (yet, I hope I'm not quarter as bad fucked up as /r9k/) or fail to enjoy literature. I tend not to care about stories. However, since my understanding of language is decent enough to write, I'm trying to decide whether it's worth for me to explore literature as a hobby. My native language teachers have praised me on multiple occasions, and my friend, who had the honor of appearing on nationwide TV thanks to her vocal talent, told me I have potential I should not waste - though frankly, my writing skills would probably go into technical writing anyway, and I have grounds to believe that all that talk of artistic potential is just a spook contrived to give me a false sense of brilliance, when in reality I'm just another 18 year old who needs to get his shit together and experience several more life crises before producing a work of actual merit, that would get forgotten anyway (though I wonder how many shit stories did your favorite writer create before producing a Hamlet, a War and Peace, a Ulysses :^) >inb4 rimbaud). Not to mention the benefits of being well read.

Pardon my chaotic style, but here's where I'd like to put my reading habits in a broader perspective. As you might have concluded from what I've written before, I am autistically disinterested in plot or characters. I usually don't care what are the participants thinking or feeling within a contrived story. If I want some crime, I just read a timeline on Wikipedia (a good example would be the 2014 Isla Vita killings, though I've read some of My Twisted World and damn, it is a good way to peer into the mind of a real criminal). My literature of choice seems to largely forgo captivating world description (or completely screw it up, like GR) and focus directly on thoughts, perhaps that's why I find pleasure in contemplating internet shitstorms or things like Ted Kaczynski's manifesto. Perhaps philosophy would be appropriate for me.
>>
OP part drei:
When I say plot doesn't do it for me, I mean it; I hardly ever watch movies. I haven't read fucking Harry Potter. I learned to read from Donald Tru... Duck comic books. My favorite books as a kid were the Horrible Science/Horrible Geography/The Knowledge/Murderous Maths series (known in the U.S. as Horrible Books) and Captain Underpants. As mentioned before, even movies don't rouse me much, and I like having my TV turned off. I don't think it matters much, but I don't particularly like history either, and watching sports provides me almost no excitement.

Still, I feel like there is salvation for my misguided psyche. Should I get into literature no matter what? What should I read? Was diving straight into GR a good idea? I enjoyed it

THE FUCKING STICKY, READ IT... That is where the journey begins

Also doing something you never liked to do, takes a little bit of effort, try to start slowly, and don't get immediatly with works that require mental gymnastics, because that isn't fun.

Buy a book that catches your attetion, and instead of reading it for 2 hours a day or a chapter a day, try to take a read when you're on public transport, naturally it depends, I live right outside of Vienna, and public transport is quite silent most of the time.

I don't have a problems with feminists who work on their reaching positions which have been dominated by men for a long time, as long as it's rightfully so and not via using the gender card, but I really dislike the social media ones who think equality is equivalent to flashing dem titties.
