Can anyone recommend me any (good) books that center on the relationship between a brother and sister? I already have The Mountain Lion (Stafford) and Eustace & Hilda (Hartley) up next, but does anyone know of any others with the same kind of strong filial bond?

(Also, seriously, no Flowers in the Attic—I've already read it.)

ITT: Overused literature quotes that make you cringe every time they're used in modern media.

So I'm like 50 pages into pic related and I have no fucking idea what's going on. When do things start to make sense?

>>
>>8416769
It makes sense from the start. The book isn't for you, drop it.
>>
Have you read 'The Crying Of Lot 49'? Pynchon likes to throw many scenes together that rarely make sense, and most of us are 'trained' to follow a straightforward story when reading a book, which makes it hard to get used to Pynchon's style. 'Crying' is much shorter and a good intro to that kind of style.
>>
>>8416770
Yeah I definitely had no problems throughout, so I assume you're just not smart enough to comprehend a book like that.

Will this genuinely improve my social skills or will it make even more socially autistic? Im not by any stretch at r9k leves of social autism but I would like to be better at communicating with people.

>>
The only way to rapidly improve communication skills is to work with a coach and a practice group like Toastmasters.
>>
>>8416726
the maxim of the book is you have to read it and apply what you learn. the book is a way to coach yourself on how you should communicate with people.
tl;dr ofc not you have to do that yourself
>>
Had to read it for uni, actually a great general guide but its just that. Also the general maxim is "Dont be a dick" and "Go suck other people's dicks", which obviously only happens when you go out and try.

Communications is a skill like any other, practice practice practice

He only created the self-aware character and was a complete master of the English language.

Find me one character in a work before Shakespeare who is self-aware and changes based on their self-awareness. Just one.
>>
there are acouple ways someone could be thinking this
a) contrarianism. there is a default group of people who will never accept anything that is established as universally good, the same people who don't like beatles. contrarians will stop at nothing to prevent a unanimous opinion because it is the only way they can make their opinion important.

2) the "seinfeld isn't funny" trope. in retrospect, newcomers to the sitcom seinfeld find the show is apparently derivative but actually the show is the source material for what most sitcoms since have been based on, shakespeare is the epitome of this

Excuse me, I don't mean to interrupt what you're doing, but would you happen to have charts of /lit/'s top books from 2006 to 2012?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
i feel like almost nobody on /lit/ reads any contemporary literature, and those that do seem to read mostly stuff by crappy recently graduated MFA students.
>>
>>8416632
These charts were an assortment of literature, not just contemporary. I'm looking for year charts as far back as they go.
>>
>>8416625
any /lit/izen that would have something like that probably wouldn't lurk in the summer. most come back in the fall after the summerfags leave, but you could check the wiki.

How are the Greeks going?

I have finally finished the first book after a month. It's going slow but it's very fun.

Starting to read bibliotheca now.

do you have the pic without your scribbles? I decided to get my fix of more modern classics out of the way before the greeks, all I have downloaded is mythology.

How does /lit/ feel about Elfriede Jelinek?

I feel like she's very 4chan in a sense, I could see her being a femanon. I don't know another female writer I've sensed this with.

Have you actually read any of her works, can you give a suggestion? I've seen Haneke's adaptation already, so I'm thinking of picking up Lust.

Lust is what I'd recommend after The Piano Teacher (unless you'd like to read the book and not just watch the film, of course)

>>8417309
Her depictions of sadomasochism are the most interesting I've seen anywhere, that is of course what's she most known for. I'm not a massive fan, but I feel like she's deeply underrated. And I think it's weird she isn't talked about more on here

Facts don't matter (cf. Trump). Most of it is finding an audience who wants to hear what you will tell them.

Read Plato's Gorgias and ignore everything Socrates says.

As stupid as Sam Harris is, he's a brilliant debater. He uses the language of his opponents to undermine them. He also tiptoes around important issues until he can find out what the "correct" public stance is. He doesn't get angry, because he doesn't really care about the outcome. He's just trying to pander to an audience and sell books.

Is this series dragon dildo lit? Is there romance between girls and dragons?

pretty much.

There are psychic links between dragons and humans, so when dragons have sex the humans experience dragon sex psychically, and can't shut it out.

You think that's lit?

Read michael and the sex goblin.

I'd hang out with that guy. This fucking wattpad has been getting memed all over lit I might as well meme it up.

In all seriousness it's actually not a bad read.
