What value exists in dedicating time to Plotinus?

I've studied Parmenides, Timaeus and other cosmological dialogues but all have left me suspect of metaphysics.

I'm still dubious to the theories of Forms, the One, and the Soul, which appear unfalsifiable due to a lack of empirical evidence. What am I missing here?

Plotinus is great. Personally, I find his stuff about the mystical experience to be more accurate than other parts of his work, but he's definitely worth studying.
>>
Appreciate the response -- do you recommend an investment in the Loeb set of 7 books?

What are your thoughts on pausing on Plotinus for now and jumping straight from Aristotle to St Augustine?

Take notice of what subject matter made you lose focus. Start reading again from there but surrender yourself to the text.

Set time aside to read and realize it's important to stay focused.

If you really can't stay focused then put the book down, but understand that you can build up your focus with practice.

What books have taken you forever to finish?
What were they? How long did they take (If you ever did finish them)? Why did they take you so long?

There are some books that I have literally been working on for years for various reasons.

The last two LotR books, took me around 2 months each (but I was also reading shorter book in this period). Infinite Jest also took a long time, 3 months in total.

LotR took a long time most because I was kinda bored and not really into genre fiction, but I kept reading 1st because I just can't drop books and 2nd because some aprts were actually good, but far between

I read IJ really slowly, trying to keep up with the crazy timeline, and after 2 hours of reading I was through around 60 pages or so
>>
>>8429399
Ulysses because it's boring as hell so I just read other books in the meantime
>>
I've been reading The Bible for 3months now, still only at like 60%, I don't think I've ever read a book which took me this long.

how did you feel about the bell jar, /lit/?
11 posts and 1 images submitted.

I enjoyed it.
I prefer it to Catcher in the Rye, considering they share the same moral resolution.
The Bell Jar isn't as dorky or juvenile as Catcher and explores both a broader and deeper psychology.

i just got Johnny Panic out of a little free library a couple of days ago. excited to start it. I read some of her collected diaries earlier this year but had to stop after a point because they were too dour.

Since this book is unfinished - is there something noticeably missing in the book that makes it unfulfilling to read with no clear resolution.

Granted I'm only 250 pages in, but even if it ends on a cliffhanger it'll be a good read, so far it's a 9/10. Much better than IJ.
>>
Dfw literally got off on not fulfilling the reader, so im not sure what you expect from the novel he died before he could finish. Literally one of the notes for the pale king says 'Things threaten to happen but nothing ever happens.' Infinite jest has an ending, after 1000 pages, that occurs 'off the page,' that you have to piece together yourself, and if you werent paying attention then you have to read it again (and no its not as simple as reading the first chapter again, theres a lot more to it than that). His first novel, broom of the system, ends in midsentence, lmao. Dfw is literary orgasm denial porn for husky bearded grad students who wear khakis and lust after japanese girls. A confirmed hack

Does anyone ever get that feeling that you've just read over a bunch of words, like a whole paragraph, but you didn't retain anything that you just read? I get that feeling a lot, I hate it.

Try rereading.
>>
Sometimes.
In particular I remember feeling that way when I read an introduction to Latin literature. After finishing a page I wasn't able to repeat anything I've just read. Their biographies, dates and oeuvres became a confusing mess.
But I'm rereading the book right now, half a year later and I'm surprised that most of it stuck.
>>
>>8429202
This happens to me constantly, you've just got to address it and reread it, as >>8429209 said. Focus, focus, focus.

A friend and I are creating a novel. What do you guys think?: A man works for corporation that believe they have just created the first interdimensional transportation device. His name is Jake. Jake travels to this dimension where there is nothing, complete darkness. Next day he goes back and finds something that does not really have a shape, but after a while begins to look more human. This thing is named Bobby. Bobby and Jake begin to talk, Bobby complaints that his lips have been feeling dried since he got them. And so Jake brings him a water bottle the next day, he likes it. The next day Jake goes back, Bobby has a bunch of water bottles. When Jake asks him there he got them, he just says, "I got thirsty again and then they were here." jake tells Bobby about Earth, and Bobby likes it. And every time Jake goes there to talk, Bobby creates his world as Jake describes his. Jake suggests that he uses his imagination to create something amazing, bigger. Bobby politely refuses and says he doesn't want to go "over the top." a few days later, Bobby's world is an exact replica of Earth, as Jake tells it, only without people. Bobby does not want to hear about how people are and makes his own ideas of what his people could be if they were the ones who built Earth. One time, the corporation tells Jake that they were thinking of traveling to other dimensions instead of just this one, but they couldn't. They couldn't even appear in a different spot. When Jake goes back, he sees Bobby making a replica of Jake himself, then he finds out that he is not in another dimension, but in another time. Jake had gone back in time to give Bobby every idea for how Earth should be, and the world began one day before Jake first traveled to this time, and all of their memories are fake.

I would say up to this part ^ was very interesting and metaphysical. It sounds like it would make for a good read as a short story/novelette.

I don't like the twist, I think it spoils the potential

Sadly it turns to shit during the timeskip (you've got like 12 arcs to go though) so just skim when you get there until you get to the final boss, which is fucking amazing.

Does it get feels? Coz it looks like it gets feel. Other than that I'm enjoying it so far.

I want a book which is like a nervous breakdown, like late at night when the logical part of your brain is turned off and you get really paranoid, or when you have a bad trip, where the conscious mind and sub conscious mind are in total disharmony with each other. I want a book that just feels like reality is falling apart around you, it would be really amazing if there were a book which actually makes you have a nervous breakdown, or if there was a book which just represents that feeling very well.

John Green ? More like John MEME!!!

There's something smug about knowing that one of the greatest writers to have ever lived is right in front of you. I see Green being mocked, but so was Nietzsche in his day.
We are witnessing the unfolding of a legend, mark my words.

200 years from now people will be reading John Green while most /lit/ writers will fail and will be erased from history.

Feels good to be alive.
