so nobody actually takes him seriously, right?
Materialists are objectively wrong ;)

His arguments are sound. But from what I've seen, he fluctuates a lot between defying religion and defying the existence of god (as a whole)
>>8431198
not anymore. his writing on evolution was consistently excellent, but he's jumped the shark.

What translation of Brothers Karamazov is the most recommended? I've read the Garnett translation of Crime and Punishment, not sure which of the many I should pick to best understand the novel.
>>8431104
I don't know, but I too started Dostoevsky with Garnett's C&P, and now I'm over halfway through her translation of Brothers K and I'm loving it.
Reading it in Russian you fucking plebeian
>>8431104
Nabokov denounced Garnett pretty heavily.
The "P&V, not for me" meme is just a meme. P&V is great, very accurate. Avsey is also top tier
As someone who writes poetry, I can't possibly fathom the idea of writing an epic. How did he do it?

Hi /lit/! I'm writing a book about a German infantry soldier during WW2, but I need help. (I've written a few books but they're mainly for fun.)
Out of these 3, which was the most involved in major battles of WW2?
-2nd Panzer Division "Das Reich"
-7th Panzer Division
-16th Infantry Division
(Feel free to add any more.
>fictional
>not going to be right to the point, shit will change.)
>pic sort of related

Waffen SS has some of the most interesting Divisions and Stories. I cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoy German WWII history. I would recommend The HitlerJugend PanzerGrenadiers Waffen SS

Looking for a book about profound feelings of loneliness. Preferably an outcast tumblretta sort of main character, but if not that's cool. Seriously, it saddens me that people hate tumblr. Even if you don't like tumblr, because you feel that it's full of "special snowflakes" or it's an "echo chamber" for ideas, you should know that a lot of the people who you hate on there take comfort in using tumblr, because a lot of people simply want to be themselves and find a community of people who accepts them for who they are, which is why tumblr is really helpful for the lgbtq community, or anyone else who is just part of some group of people who are looking to not feel so alienated and isolated. If you don't agree with me on that, then please just leave your offensive comment if you must (I really can't stop you), or just go away.

most books are about loneliness

I tried using tumblr once but couldn't find anything but pictures. Didn't see any discussion. Even when searching for text, the only text posts were people asking for reblogs or people posting links to their wordpress blog. Doesn't seem like a place for back and forth discussion or arguments. Much of the hate here for tumblr's ideology is artificially inseminated by /pol/, but on a fundamental level its a hugbox whereas 4chan is like a brawl in a ditch. It's natural for people who like one to dislike the other. Also, people need to learn to lurk more somehow, so calling them out for sounding like they're still on tumblr or reddit works well enough for that purpose. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make here is that you should read my diary, desu.

I mean you don't really new to know formal logic to appreciate most of Wittgensteins early work (and none of his later). Moreover his notation is dated, and even then it was obscure and unconventional - which makes for harder reading.
Do you take notes when reading dense non-fiction?
>>8430792
I take notes when I'm reading. Bar-none.
>>8430792
I do not take notes on other people's work.
I concentrate on reading the novel - forming my own ideas and drawing my own connections, but I seldom take notes.
