Doris Lessing would be considered one of the greatest modern writers if not for sexism in the industry. Same for Margaret Atwood.
>>
>>8427938
She gets a shitload of respect though, Atwood I mean. I like her writing but it seems disproportionate to how good her stuff actually is. Then again I'm in Canada so they probably hyper focus on her because we have like 4 writers in our entire history that mattered

Any point in reading this when I have severe dyscalculia? I have trouble grasping the simplest forms of maths, should I even bother?

From what I remember, the book's much more about logic than arithmetic.
>>
>>8427526

There are a couple pieces here and there that involve a certain kind of algorithmic thinking that might be difficult, but it's not like they make the whole of the book impossible to understand
>>
>>8427526

only interesting/useful part in this was the LISP references

not sure why Bach was in this book, don't think it's appropriate to apply the idea of recursion to music any more than say biology, which is inherently recursive, a lot of music "is recursive" but musicians don't have that in mind

Why is it called post-modern if it was written in the past?

>>
Because it pretends to be the future
>>
a better question is why its still called Modernism

Because Cervantes just based like that

if there is one weakness in pynchon's writing, it is is his over-reliance on references to obscure history, pop culture, etc. do you agree?

>>
>>8427375
No I think it's sometimes the fact that he weighs down what could be profound with his zany humor. He just needs to have more restraint sometimes, but other than that I can't really pin down too much I dislike about him

What makes it excessive and not merely stylistic?

I'm considering buying this book in spanish (my native language). Does anyone have both the spanish and english editions? Both the same cover, one Vintage Espanol and the other St. Martin's Press.

English:
898 pages
Dimensions 139.7 x 208.28 x 45.72mm 657.71g

Spanish:
1125 pages
Dimensions 134 x 200 x 52mm
739.35g

I mention the english version because that's the one I've seen featured in youtube reviews, etc, so I know it's size, but I see that the spanish version is like 200 pages longer, heavier, and bigger in size. I'm fearing it's just too big to be confortable. Am I worrying too much?
Anyone has both by any chance, to share a pic?

>>
It's obscenely big, but way better than the shit english translation
>>
>>8427294
I honestly couldn't imagine you reading this book in the original translation and thinking "man my arms are tired, I wish I got the smaller, shittier, pun-less English translation so my bitchtwig arms wouldn't be straining to hold the book"
>>
>>8427302
So you do have both? Please share a comparison pic.

I've been comparing it with other meme books I have. It's not as obsenely big as The Recognitions or Infinite Jest. So it's not THAT terrible. But yes, still big. I'm being turned off lately by huge books. Really annoying to carry them around (bus ride, dead hours, etc). I'm tempted to read it on my e-reader but I suspect it will be such a great book, that I want to do it in physical format.

1. "'Science can't tell us how to be moral,' sneered the Humanitiesfag extremely Jewishly." I agree, but why the hell do people who say this try to imply that philosophy can figure out objectively correct morals? Why do philosophaggots cry when you bring up the Munchhausen Trilemma? Is it because it is not conducive to self congratulatory mental masturbation?

2. How do you cope with the stress of keeping up with the Joneses in terms of reading about boring shit you wouldn't normally care about but you are told you have to care about? E.g., Greeks, continental philosophy, fiction (particularly the western canon etc.)

Do you recommend to read his trilogy of novels with no other books in between or it doesn't matter?
22 posts and 2 images submitted.

Godot, then Proust, then Endgame, then More Pricks than Kicks, then Murphy, then Watt, then Happy Days, then Krapp's last tape, and then the trilogy. After that, read the rest of his drama and fiction.
>>
>>8427163
What do you think of Embers?
>>
>>8427157
>no other books in between
? You'll likely want a rest before the Unnamable at least. If you mean other books of his, there's not much point to not reading those three in order; other than that it doesn't matter.

At around ten or so I had read the first three books in that series hoping for another adventure in the vein of Lord of the Rings. Like with all contemporary fantasy I had given taste to in that time I eventually tossed it down in disgust.
>>
You don't really masturbate if you can't cum imo.
