What is a reason for people to believe in a soul or a ghost inside a human being? is it just a concept left behind from years of religious thought? are there any dualist here that want to argue?
>>8643023
it's an attempt at an explanation of subjective, unsolidifiable experience.
the soul is not a 'thing' outside or inside human beings. Start with the Greeks.

Casual reader here
Hey /lit/ should I read the catcher in the rye? I'm interested since I watched Ghost in the shell wich was inspired heavily on this book. I heard it has bad fame as well for the Lennon shooter and all that
So well /lit/...should i read it?
Yes it's my favourite book I'd recommend it
You won't understand it without reading the Greeks beforehand.
No, you should read The Recognitions instead, it's like The Catcher In The Rye on steroids.
How do I get better at writing metaphors?
By eating pussy in public.

my diary, its full of charming nihilism and a wicked sense of humor
Do you think it eats away at him, deep down, that he knows he only lucked out. That none of his works will survive or be considered important literary works? He has all the money. He has all the fans. But he doesn't have the talent... and he knows it... and the only way he can cope is by writing more mindless scary books to make money.
He has said he is the literary equivalent of a big mac and fries so no he doesn't give a shit

His nose bothers me. Look how high it is on his face. Like an orc.
>>8642688
He literally doesn't give a shit, he's perfectly comfortable churning out books regularly to keep himself rich.
I went to the bookstore the other day and checked out the classical corner for the first time. The Loeb classical series looked sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. I learned the basic translation skills in high school, but I can't easily read Greek yet.
What does /lit/ think of the Loeb classic series?
Which ones are worth getting?
Are there any particulary accesible works that'll allow me to brush up my Greek?
You would think a complete collection of Loebs would be glorious and beautiful, but it's actually pretty ugly.
Ask me again tomorrow I'm busy
Ugly color scheme, reminds of of 1980s CGA graphics cards. But complete and relatively cheap. Any idea where to buy part of the series or maybe the whole thing ? 532 volumes should come to around 12000 euros, not really that expensive as a long-term investment.

some basic questions
in a society with no state, how do you build an hydroelectric dam? how do make sure the engineer is qualified? do rapists go to prison? who decides how many years he goes to prison?
if that society with no state and no social classes is impossible, then, communism can only offer us totalitarian dictatorships with no private property and planned economies, like those that existed in eastern europe.
but the hundreds of millions of eastern europeans dont seem to have liked them much.
I'll open your guts

>americans whine for over 20 years about not getting a nobel prize in literature
>the committee awards it to bob dylan as a joke
whats some other great literature related banter?
Nobody cares at this point, man.
It shows his true colors.
>Writer and commentator Will Self wrote that the award "cheapened" Dylan whilst hoping the laureate would "follow Sartre in rejecting the award".[74]
I wonder what people who spent hours listening to his records, paid big money to experience him live, and jumped up in the air of pure joy when they heard he won, thinks of his reaction to their appreciation

>Sartre has also been noted for his open relationship with the prominent feminist theorist Simone de Beauvoir. Together, Sartre and de Beauvoir challenged the cultural and social assumptions and expectations of their upbringings, which they considered bourgeois, in both lifestyle and thought.

first of all, compatibalism.
Second of all, Kant.
Third of all, compatibalism, but using Sartre to pretend it aint.
What makes a good villain?
>clear concise motivation
>detailed plans
>excels at either being complete bullshit EVULLL or has a purpose for why he's evil (revenge, trying to change the world)
>good backstory
>physically different (perhaps intimidating) than most characters (ie The Judge in Blood Meridian)
>trait they excel at
>best dialogue in the book
I think the best villains are the ones that the reader has a problem finding fault in, but it's all in the context of the story you're telling it.
Villains also should have some antithesis qualities from the protagonist.
how'd they come up with the design for sauron helmet?
>>8641932
This is a pretty good description, the type of villain should fit well the story/hero. The villain should have traits the viewer can identify with to understand why he's doing whatever it is he does.
