Lads, 20 yo here and this year I started to read more.
I skipped a lot and I read 6 so far, now I'm reading Inferno by Dante.
There is still hope for me, right? I got a shitload of books for me to read the next year and I plan to read at least 100pag/day.
How many books have you read this year so far?

How do I make my mom more /lit/? Looking for Christmas present books.
I would describe her as an intelligent person. She's in her early 60s, rational, a "natural leader," well educated and not a philistine in any sense.
She likes shit like legal thrillers and detective novels (think Michael Connelly) which is fine, but I think she has "lost" the poetry/prose bug and would really appreciate the feeling of amazement and exhilaration that one gets when reading really good prose or verse. I'm thinking of trying Nabokov with her which was my own introduction to the beauty of English, but I'm afraid it might put her off. Any advice is appreciated. Where to begin?

A 19th century Russian nobleman is sent to a hard labour camp for four years, comes back, and then writes a character that is literally me. How is this possible?
Dosto was being satirical when he wrote the Underground Man, I hope you understand.
>>8796384
Notes from Underground is a case study of being irreparably spooked. Dosto was sent to gulag precisely because he was spooked by his Christian morality out of acting in his best interests, i.e keeping his head down and not being sent to gulag. The underground man is spooked by his literary ideals in a similar fashion. The conflict between egoism and subservience to higher ideals is timeless and manifests in infinite ways, but I believe the answer you are looking for is simply "spooks lol"
>>8796386
What's he satirising?
What is the nicest book?

Ok guys, I haven't read this yet (it's on my list), but the idea or plot seems interesting enough. I'm assuming the novel is about an avant-garde(insofar as he's attempting to operate on grounds not yet explored) architect who sticks by his attempts despite the opposition. Is this far off? If not it sounds like the story of an artist to look up to, what's the issue? Where does the egoism come in? Is the protagonist a piece of shit?
:(
It's a 700 page diatribe on collectivism. I like it tho
>>8796351
God it's so bad. There's so much to say about why it's bad, but to focus on just one thing is the constant fucking emphasis on his iconoclastic avant garde style of architecture that the stodgy architectural community won't accept because they dont believe in new ideas, and it's described as nothing more than watered down Frank Lloyd Wright and the book was written decades after he became popular and the architectural community started sucking his dick.
Which is to say the book sucks because it fundamentally misrepresents both artistic and engineering communities and also human nature itself.
Such a piece of shit.
We're so lucky that Pynchon was born in his generation. If he were born a couple decades later he'd be a writer for Family Guy, and that would be epic as fuck, but we'd be missing his awesome zaniness in literary form.
>>8796320
How do you know he doesn't write for Family Guy?
he kinda looks like ole what's his name
You very clearly have not read a single one of his books
beyond Psycho whats his best? worst? BEE /general/
I've only read Less Than Zero by him. Was pretty good, liked the style.

You aren't deluded enough to think you can just "become" a writer... right, anon?
>>8796283
No, I'll have to force you to suck me off first.
>>8796283
I already am a writer
>>8796283
I became a writer when I was four faggot.
Pretty much since I can remember I've always wanted to be a writer, but then as I got older I realized the chances of being a successful one that's able to actually support myself is more or less impossible. But now that I have a decent job and am able to support myself, I've started writing more and more as a hobby on the side.
How hard is it to get a book published? Is it as easy as writing a novel and sending it to a publisher, or is there political hoops I have to jump through/initial costs I'll have to pay for first? Im not really looking at this a moneymaking scheme, but I'd rather not have to pay anything. If my shit's good the publisher will front all the costs of printing and publication, right? Or will they just see a document from an unknown author and immediately throw it in the trash?

>>8796193
Dude if your shits good then someone'll publish it.
>How hard is it to get a book published?
Very hard, even if you're good.....especially if you're good.
>Is it as easy as writing a novel and sending it to a publisher
Uh...no.
>or is there political hoops I have to jump through
Knowing people in publishing will definitely help.
>initial costs I'll have to pay for first?
Going to writers conferences and hobbnobbing with other writers an agents will greatly increase your chances, but admission to these things are extremely expensive.
>I'd rather not have to pay anything
Really? Wow, I'd never have guessed that about you. Your chances go way down without networking, but it's not impossible....like winning the lottery isn't impossible.
>If my shit's good
Stop thinking in terms of good or not. Think in terms of marketable, or not, from now on.
>will front all the costs of printing and publication, right
Yes, they pay for everything up front, and claim 80% of the profit later.
>Or will they just see a document from an unknown author and immediately throw it in the trash?
Most likely thing to happen, yes. If you're not published, strike one. If your project isn't very similar to something that's already selling, strikes two and three.
>>8796216
Can you only publish a book if you have notoriety nowadays? Do you have to have something published in a literary magazine or newspaper before anyone will even talk to you?
ITT: pleb filters
>>8796170
Fuck off, Reddit
>>8796170
You're a retard, and I would definitely put this book very high on a list of must-reads for beginners. It's an excellent example of a person who convinced themselves that they were right by virtue of their own conceit. The reason the book is so reviled is because it's easy for plebs to see why it's basic premise is stupid, and I would suggest this book to any person who is in danger of convincing themselves that they are right, rather than exploring the possibility that they are wrong.
>>8796170
literally among the worst (if not the very worst) literally canon has to offer.
Pure shite on every level, the writing is essentially proto-fanfic writing
