Taking cover is generally very worthwhile when bombs are dropping. Do that instead.

I forsee some cyber-punk type shit where the authorities get some sort of gadget that disables any guns in their vicinity.

Of course criminals will jury rig or just steal these devices to protect themselves as well. Shit they might be marketed to civilians even as "better than body armor." Also this, people will do it anyways, banning machineguns hasnt changed the fact that if you can get a hold of a barrel, some tubing, and bar stock you can build a sub-machinegun in a weekend in your garage basically from scratch, not to mention the plethora of drop in mods you can make for legal weapons in basically a few hours. The law only effects those who are going to respect it in the first place, but lets be honest, its never been about "saftey" its about control.
