It's been debated that joining a higher form of service that has better trained soldiers (ie Rangers) would have a lower fatality rate than enlisted men despite engaging in more dangerous missions

Please, someone tell me the weapon in pic related is not a real Lewis gun
NYPD will melt over 20 thousand firearms they seized. The main one on display is the WW1 Lewis Gun.
There are some other interesting ones too like a MP40 (or is it a MP38?) and an UZI
Apparently the Lewis gun was picked up in Queens, NY

Not sure? But it has an optional 7hp Honda motor. I have about the same motor on my log splitter, and that thing runs forever at full throttle on a tank of gas. So I am guessing it's pretty good.
My mother and I are trying to find a lever action rifle or shotgun to buy as a Christmas gift for my father. I don't know the first thing about these weapons so I'm hoping /k/ has some insight to share.
My father doesn't shoot often and he doesn't currently own any long guns. He stacks 9x19 and .45acp for his pistols, so I was thinking it'd be cool to find a pistol caliber carbine, since that would be easy to handle for someone with limited rifle experience and since he wouldn't have to buy new ammo. Unfortunately it looks like no one makes factory carbines like this.
My second choice would be a 12 gauge shotgun. Several family members have 12 gauges so maybe we could organize some trap shoots and he could have some family fun with it cowboy style.
What does /k/ suggest? We're looking to spend around $800 or less.
