What's the deal with this gun? It's basically a battle rifle version of the AK or what?

No. The SVD and AK are two completely different designs and are no way related.
The AK-74 is a 'high velocity' version of the AKM, in that it shoots a much faster bullet than the AKM. And the RPD is another completely different design from the AK. The RPK is the big brother to the AKM.

It is a DMR that is Issued out on a platoon level. It is reliable enough to serve this role while being more accurate and deadly than a conventional assault rifle.

Why do old guns get such a bad rep?
It seems people buy that bows were better than them. Here's a knowledgeable guy talking about the subject:

Some of his points:

Bow on the other hand weren't complex to use and accuracy wasn't an important factor because they were used in volley fire and against large formations. What made bows hard to use was having the strength to use one. Pretty much strength is the most important factor when using a bow despite what RPGs and video games tell you. To have a capable archer you need someone with enough strength to pull back 100+ pound draw weight AND keep at it for a decent pace while wearing armor and in battle.
So then comes the arquebus and muskets which are easier to use and more devastating than bows and arrows. You may not get a high rate of fire but when that iron ball hits you're gonna fuck someone up unlike an arrow. If it takes you years to train an archer and weeks to train a decent arquebusier than it seems to me the gun is the superior weapon.
The Japanese for example learned how good arquebuses were during the Sengoku Era. When they invaded Korea in the 1500s their Samurai were armed with guns. They pretty much outranged the Korean and Ming archers while able to cause great damage, it was a decisive factor during the war. The thing that fucked them up was the superior Korean navy which disrupted their supply lines.

Alright /k/ I don't want this to turn into a blog but I got an safety issue and I need to know how to handle it.

She is only going to be here a few weeks before shipping off to my Sister's place where she can get long term help. She is lucid enough to function but there are moments where she genuinely sends a chill up my spine. When she talks about how fucked over and angry she is at the World. I don't own a gun safe. I was thinking of storing the shotgun offsite since I use it mostly as a range toy but my carry pistol. I use it every day, locked and loaded and by my bed stand at night.
Is it a bad idea to go without a carry weapon for 2-3 weeks or risk her getting her hands on it while I'm asleep? I don't think she is suicidal but I am not used to mental health issues and I have no idea of what she may be capable of now.

I would definitely leave your shotgun with a friend you trust, I wouldn't want to live without a pistol though. Does she know about your guns? If it were me I'd probably keep my pistol unloaded next to my bed and a magazine under my pillow while she was staying.

Hey /k/, what's the easiest way to make cosmoline fuck off? I recently got a nugget as a gift, and it's practically caked with the stuff. I've never dealt with it before since I only own a Glock. From my bit of research, I've seen a ton of different methods, ranging from using mineral oils to heating the parts up (via an oven/heat gun) to even soaking the parts in gasoline.
I want to ensure I don't damage the thing, but I'd also like to pick a method that's effective. I would imagine a full disassembly is required first off before any cleaning can be done, right?
