It's alright.

Consider it as America's answer to the AKM; a stamped assault rifle operating on a piston, one of the goals being that it's a weapon which even a poorer and less developed country can easily produce (it's easier to stamp and bend sheets of metal to make a receiver than it is to machine one from a billet, though it's not necessarily cheaper).

It saw little success on it's own, but the action itself is fundamentally good and functional, and thus it spawned many derivatives.

The G36 is an AR18 made from plastic.
The Steyr AUG is a bullpup AR18
The L85 is a bullpup AR18 which doesn't work.
The F2000 is the AR18 as a boat.
The MP7 is a Mini-Me AR18 as a grip-fed PDW/SMG.
The SCAR is a nice AR18.

Most of it's derivatives does what it does but better. My personal favorite is the Aussie made Leader T2, which manages to be incredibly simple, using the same kind of action but an even more rudimentary receiver and bolt.
