How to waste 4-6 years of your life and be a government leech/homeless drug addict.

>falling for the 'military will teach me skills' meme

They try to make it sound like you will get out and be better prepared for civilian life but its the exact opposite. They will just rob you of your 20s and you will fall farther and farther behind your friends that just got a job and stuck with it. If you want to advance in civilian life, go to college and then get a civilian job. If you want to advance in the military, be in the military. Just don't expect one world to give a shit about what you did in the other because it doesn't.
>>
>>32747236
This.

Any life lesson that you are looking to learn in the military can be learned in the civvie life too. Just go to school, get good grades, and get a good job. You'll be happier for it.

Last thing, "tactical skills" that you learn in the military are skills you will never apply in the real world. How often do you think you're going to be kicking in doors or clearing out houses? If you're not a cop, count on it to be a fat 0.

I know someone who was recently the victim of a crime. I want to get a gun for self-defense. The problem is I know nothing about guns. What kind of gun should I get?

Ideally the kind that shoots bullets.
>>
>>32746816
Don't they all do that?
>>
>>32746798
Go shoot some and see what you like.

Also you should know if you're looking for a pistol or rifle. Imo shotguns are retarded self defense weapons.
Also depending on where you live might restrict you a bit, so be aware of your local gun laws.

Can we get a self help thread, if there is such a thing? This is an anonymous board, so i figured it would be the right place.

You've done it. You spent eight, sometimes even more, years of your life under an oath and uniform, and now it's all gone. You look at yourself in the mirrow, expect to see either jungle camo or cerimonial, and you see a plain white shirt, shorts and shoes. Grooming standards are also gone, too.

You've commited acts of violence against your enemy (if there is such a thing) voluntarily and been trained extensively to do so.

And now what? How do other fellow veterans or retired LEO colleagues feel about it? I just feel like the "operational paranoia" is never going to go away. The antecipation feeling that every coming vehicle is simply going to explode itself, and me. How do you cope with such things? And it seems worse now - because you're alone.

I should ask my dad about this
He spent 15 years in county bigger than the smallest states with only 6 other deputies
I would imagine it being stressful, considering a criminal could have wasted him and be over the border by the end of the afternoon

Well, it surely is stressful. I'll give it a story, because apparently this will be buried quickly.

>LEO in an unnamed SOCOM country
>going into a 24/7 gas station to buy cigarretes, i believe this was early 2005 or 2006
>looking into some chips to buy too
>no one else but me and the cashier in the place
>take my wallet (which has a badge) out to pay
>casually look over my shoulder, which has become an habit
>realize i'm not really alone, because there's this greasy man, in his 40's, in a social shirt, drinking a beer, passing right behind me
>he stares at my hip, and then back at my wallet
>realizes i'm looking at him, and then looks again to the ground
>i've pretty much fucked up at this point
>cashiers asks "Anon?" (i was a regular there at the time, always liked to make a small talk with the workers)
>man starts walking at my direction with what looked like an uncomfortable weight in his hip, slightly unbalanced, placing his right hand where i couldn't see
>he asks "(slang for military police) Anon??"
>he has dropped his beer can in the ground at this point
>i don't really remember drawing, but when i looked again at him, i had my PT-92 pointed squarely at his chest
>in the exact moment i was pulling the trigger (which was in single action, unlocked) i see this bright light coming from under my sights
>i hear a loud bang followed by a dark grey smoke, a whizzing sound and the noise of the capsules in the ground
>i see the impact in his shirt as i shoot him
>it looks like you're punching the said person, as it contorts the body in a weird way after an impact that deforms the shirt
>he turns around to run, falls over his own arms and remains there, with his head turned to me, staring blindly with wide open eyes
>i see that the huge windows of the gas station have been shattered
>there's someone on the outside, shooting at me, and i only realized it now, in what seemed like an eternity
>return fire.

>there are two guys over Honda motorbike
>it never had crossed my mind that the criminal inside the store could have backup
>one of them is clearly pointing a revolver at me
>simply unload magazine into them two, with a single hand pointing
>at this point i was not hearing the gunshots, i only remember the cashier saying "My god, my god, help me"
>PT-92 is open
>let the empty mag in the floor, place the backup one in there, pull slide forward
>i realize that the shooting has ceased
>walk to the first man, realize he's now over a pool of blood and his revolver (a .32 s&w Rossi) was sitting several meters away from him, still alive though
>go outside
>one man laying beside the Honda bike, with a closed helmet
>the bullet hole in the back of the helmet seems to be the cause of his stillness
>no gun on his hands, nothing
>now starting to realize what has just happened
>people are screaming to me that the other guy ran away on foot
>"Where?"
>into that avenue
>i don't really have to search long, as several persons are around something a few blocks away from the gas station
>find him on the ground, drowning on his own blood
>at least five cavities on his back
>someone says he threw a gun into a manhole
>wait until the first patrol car arrives

Well, the rest is pretty much uninsteresting. But by far, the most stressful situation i was in.

>Newly minted Secretary of Defense James Mattis celebrated his first full day at the Pentagon by overseeing 31 strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

>Mattis entered the Pentagon Saturday with a smile for his first full day of work, and for good reason, considering the significant bombardment ISIS forces received.

>A variety of fighters, bombers and remotely piloted aircraft engaged in the bombing run, which saw 25 strikes in Syria and six in Iraq. In Syria, two strikes destroyed ISIS units and artillery near the town of Bab. ISIS forces in Raqqa, the terrorist group’s de facto capital, took a heavy beating, as 22 strikes destroyed 12 tactical units, nine fighting positions, two underground improvised explosive bomb factories and an ISIS headquarters. The final strike targeted two ISIS oil wells in Deir ez Zour.

http://dailycaller.com/2017/01/22/mattis-celebrates-first-day-at-pentagon-by-blowing-up-isis-31-times/

Not gonna lie, Mattis is true to his word and might actually roll up ISIS within 30 days.

I thought the US military had to have a pistol that was hammer fired and had to have an external safety.

Also does this mean surplus P320s?

How does one wear web gear with a rucksack?

For example if the used 2nd line gear is ALICE web gear and the 3rd line gear ALICE M-Pack how do you wear them at the same time?

Should the rucksack's kidney/lower back belt be at the same level with the web gear belt or above it?

I read through the ALICE instruction manual and tried to search any pics that would answer my question but so far no luck.

Thanks.

You just wear it over the web gear, what's so hard about that?

With the medium pack without frame always rode high above the belt anyway, and when I did use the frame the lower back strap usually fell right below the web belt. It's not like a modern ruck where the kidney strap is designed to place the weight on the hips, the strap is to just keep the lower part of the frame in place.
>>
>>32746225
It depends on height. I forget the range that the pack frame is designed for. If you're outside that range I guess you were just kind of fucked.

These guys are Kurdish fighters of the PKK shooting down a helicopter of the turkish army.

Played around with a M1 carbine today, it had the best handling/ergonomics of anything I have ever used before.

Short and compact, comically light at 5.2 pounds unloaded, great sights and very comfortable.

Would like to get a real one eventually but $1200 is steep. Is there anything $700 or less that can even touch the weight and handling of the M1? Must be the 5 1/2 or less, and chambered in a centerfire cartridge.
