My dad thought I was an idiot for taking the elephant gun over some of the more practical smaller caliber hunting rifles. I wanted something that's expensive to shoot, ear splittingly loud, has painful recoil, and can take out any big game rampaging through the neighborhood.

It's a bolt action so velocity doesn't matter in terms of reliability or usage.

You can down-load 7.62 to subsonic, and you can up-load .300 to 2200 FPS.

So there's no practical difference between the two, but .300 being a western cartridge, I would believe it to be more easily reloadable and more easy to develop precision loads.

The Empire allowed civilians to own certain types of blasters, but planets also had their own laws and regulations about them.
