Hey /ic/
I'm starting art school soon and need to makea portfolio between 5-12 pieces as part of the application prcess. I'm not here to ask what I should draw or anything though, but I'm kinda stuck at four pieces soo...
Show me your portfolios? If you don't have a proper one, make a quick collage of your top three if you had to make one out of your existing pieces.
It inspires me to no end to see other peoples' work but there's a difference between what someone might normally post here and their best work and Im really interested in best work.
Pic is by me, drew it on L so it ended up drug related. Had a weird connection to my fiance's cat and this came out of it. One of my best pieces to date, unsure if it's appropriate for my portfolio or not (I'd change the lettering though cause it turned out like crap but i came down by then).

I would not use that they'll think you're a loser stoner, like you probably are.
Art schools have no standards anymore so they probably wont care about your lack of drawing skills. If they do turn you down it will be because of your horrible taste, your aesthetic choices scream immaturity.
>>2363425
Pretty much what they said. You also need to figure out what the school is looking for, and if they're reputable. Especially if they're reputable. If you're looking at schools in the US, you're gonna be fucked by debt and shitty, uncredited, do-whatever-you-want schools aren't gonna help you.
talk about it

Currently practicing facial feature, how they work and how light interacts with them. Thought it might be a good opportunity to make a thread about this, to help everyone who is currently struggling with this (including myself).
Face references and images with a focus on a specific feature of the face are appreciated equally. Little tips on drawing the face and small details that might be overlooked are also a plus.

this is way too niche to every work you retard
Your picture is shit.

Can someone fill me in on the "Californian plein air" movement and how it has influenced the art in the entertainment industry? Pic related, plein air painting by Disney art director and Art Center instructor Bill Perkins.
It seems like a lot of the top guys doing production art have a similar style, emphasizing warm tones and vivid hues in the reflected light.
Just read color and light by gurney, it literally teaches you to paint like that
>>2363217
You literally didn't read my post
>art center
there's your answer
the two main avenues for the west coast entertainment industry have traditionally been calarts & artcenter. calarts was literally created by disney as a feeder school.
they've all been learning from the same people for the same jobs.
anyone has those instances where the color of your art just kinda gets warmer when viewed on mobile? Idk if my laptop has a problem
Photo aint related bleh
>>2363180
>just kinda gets warmer
You need to calibrate your screen brah...or your mobile display is shit.
Generally that happens all the time on all sorts of screens.
>>2363180
color reproduction on digital devices is a really really big fucking problem.
ideally drop 3k$ and buy a thunderbird apple screen. that's what every AD ever hiring you will use to check out your work anyway.
other than that, every monitor below a 3k$ price tag, every laptop, every mobile device (except maybe last gen apple devices) will have a screen that distorts color within some spectrum to some degree. it's really fucking annoying.
>>2363228
Or just get a Spyder calibration device. They're like $75 or so.
is it possible to git gud naturally without following any particular guidelines from a book or study? just by drawing in high frequency do you naturally show better skill, or did you stop and realize you were making the same mistakes over and over, and decided to follow some steps from vilppu/loomis/bridgman/whatever?
>>2362267
100% yes.
>>2362267
yes. You just need to look a lot at life.
>>2362267
>is it possible to git gud naturally without following any particular guidelines from a book or study?
Define "study." Because if you're paying attention to the forms and shapes of people while drawing them - that's studying. Just paying attention to how everything works and comes together is study.
If you mean "without drawing real people or real life" then yes, but it's unlikely, and way harder.
> just by drawing in high frequency do you naturally show better skill, or did you stop and realize you were making the same mistakes over and over, and decided to follow some steps from vilppu/loomis/bridgman/whatever?
How are you going to correct a mistake if you don't recognize it's there? How you correct it isn't so much a problem, because the results are what matters, but without stopping to look back at your work and see where you fucked up you'll just keep making the same mistakes over and over.
Broke out the colored pencil
That's pretty solid my nigga. Much better than your oil work, at least on a fundamental level. White people are easy mode though, I want to see you try your hand at a nubian subsaharyan queen next time my family member
Thanks

How much do you consider framing?
The head being cut off at the top feels unintentional.
Hello /ic/
>tl;dr: what girl or woman’s face would you use as a source-model for a drawing of Lady Justice (pic related)
I am going to make a large scale drawing of Lady Justice for my father (he is a lawyer). I pretend to use the classical pose of one hand holding the scale and other the sword (the scale higher than the sword, meaning that first there comes the trial, and only after it the punishment).
However, instead of a greatly athletic and Greek-profiled figure in a dress I will make a frail and skinny naked girl, meaning that Justice is not heroic or all mighty, and that she constantly fails, like we, humans (who are ourselves, in the end, the substance whose breath and vote gives body to the abstraction of Justice). I will also make her eyes open and without a blindfold, but they will be in that blue-milky-white color of blind people.
I plan to do the work with charcoal, white pastel and graffiti pencils, and use color only in the milky-light-blue blind eyes of the figure.
I would like some help on this topic, however: what girl or woman’s face would you use as a source-model for a drawing of Lady Justice? I don’t know what features would look good on her.

it will be shit

We all have to start somewhere. I will do my best to make a good work.

>What is the point of life-drawing when you can do construction?
>What is the point of construction when you can do life-drawing?
When painting a still life, should I worry about shapes and proportions (think the Picasso drawing exercise in Betty Edwards' book) or interpreting what I have in front of my eyes and construct it with my knowledge of perspective and rendering?
I do the later but want to get into traditional media portraiture and absolutely everybody swears by life-drawing as the answer as if it was the key to gettin gud, but for me it feels akward and I feel like it won't have a long-term impact in my progress.
Opinions?

Don't listen to haters, you have your own style and that's good:)
Starting to learn digital painting. I'm about to look into some of the ctrl+paint paid videos after seeing some of the free ones, but if I'm gonna start investing money into this, I want to make sure I'm using the best online resources possible. Are there any better alternatives? are gnomon, fzd more focused on advanced stuff?
I'm guessing they all focus on photoshop - would the techniques be equally applicable to manga studio? It's the only one I own legitimately
