>be Canadian
>have a choice of being a freelance artist and getting paid absolute peanuts even at the pro level
>or the choice of sucking figurative black dick for decades to try and compete in the fuck awful studio industry here
Why is the art industry so shit? We deserve better.

Sounds like any other Job, OP. Might as well make yourself likeable and make your own product to sell.
>>2354315
I can go learn coding in 2 years and get a $40k job out the gate in under 10 interviews. And in 3-4 years after that I'd be earning $60-80k.
Art is just really crap over here.

hate to break it to you, but this isn't a phenomenon unique to Canada.

Done
... i think
So I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo soon, and I have an idea on what I want, but have yet to find an artist to help this on paper.
Can /vi/ help me out?
Will be linking pictures through the thread, along with my design thoughts.
I'm thinking the ouroboros encircling the Alpha and Omega, with those incorporated into the snake, and having Lucifer's Sigil underneath it all, with the script, " For God so loved the world".
Hey, /ic/.
I still consider myself to be a beginner and I've started reading Loomis, off and on, about eight months ago.
I've been struggling with where to actually start. I've checked out Proko and find is material to be very
entertaining as well as educational, but it doesn't really give me a guideline on where I should be/go in the future.
I want to do this the most efficient way possible, but what should I study? Perspective? Anatomy?
I'm lost and hopefully someone can give me an idea.
>>2356700
I Apologize for the flipped image.
>>2356700
the problem with art schools is that they never teach pespective until late on.
You should study perspective/anatomy for construction drawing and draw from life/references at the time.
Practice drawing few hundred individual features and simple poses. (some feet, hands, heads, eyes...) focus on doing consistent/ symmetrical
drawings.
You can go just fine without knowing color theory/compsition at this time.

>tfw almost 200k worth of markers burned in a fire
don't have an actual picture of the markers, yeah it was covered by the insurance but seeing them all melted and disfigured made me feel really sad.
>>2351682
what the fuck, why did I write 200k, meant $200
Does anyone know of some literary/art magazines that are accepting illustration submissions? Looking to get my name out there.
Yes.
i recently rediscovered a passion and talent for drawing, and very recently i've just been drawing and painting on my phone with a stylus
should i do more hand drawn? most my drawing is based off instinct of size and placement, and i struggle to do more complex digital and hand drawn to a lesser extent
general critique
Pencil and paper will not hurt since its more precise and versatile.
If you want to get serious at art see out sticky, I rec you to start with Bert Dodson's Keys to drawing.
>>2357849
phone is probably too small and will give you bad habits. A real tablet might be too much of an investment this early on, so yea basically any writing utensil and paper to get started. All your skills will transfer to digital later if you stick with it. What you use doesn't matter when starting so don't get hung up on materials.
I'm trying to learn how to use colors and how to compose according to lightning. Any suggestons on this?
It is "finished" already (personal deadline), but how could it have been better?
ps: The pose, unfortunally, has to be like this. Crouching with the arms between the legs and looking backwards.

the alien itself is an ok model. I can't say much about that since I'm not a 3d artist myself. what I can say is that from the standpoint of an artist in general, the grass and wall are very lazily done. There's no depth in this, no visual intrigue and the textures themselves lack very little connection. another issue is the light source does not read well. I don't know if we are looking at an alien who was just run down and cornered, because the lighting almost makes it look like its night and people are using flashlights. that being said, its neither dark or light enough to read that way since the flashlights would make it a brighter yellow and the night would make everything else around the scene much darker. This is all in the process since you are learning about these things.

My uncle has been a artist for about 50 years and I wanted to see what my fellow anons had to say
Excuse the shitty images/ bad angles I didn't have alot of time but theese are a few of his pieces
>>2357712
If I invested 50+ years of my life and my work looked like that, I would have killed myself 45 years ago. tell your uncle hes good like the nice normie you are, and don't tell him any different. Its clear hes only doing this to waste time and money on the way to his grave
Hey /ic/ as of lately i've haven't been to happy with my coloring style as of lately so I wanted to ask /ic/ what are some ways you color/paint your art or share color theory
>>2356984
My advice? don't stick to a consistent coloring style. experiment, and pick the coloring based on the mood of the picture.
>>2356984
do life study on light
>>2358258
and a reason to my barebone critic, you have a heavy case of pillow shading
My art store has a sale and is selling some Senneliers watercolor tubes on the cheap (£3.25)
What are the main set of tubes you recommend I get?
>>2344868
Depends on what your are planning to draw, obviously.
Abstract space-related stuff will likely take blue/purple, women in red dresses will take lot's of red, etc, etc.
>>2344894
For me it would be a starter pack, so the best primary choices of red/blue/yellow to get started and maybe some secondary etc
If you are wanting to do portraits or life painting, Id go for Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Yellow Ochre, vermillion, prussian blue,
opaque white, paynes gray, cadmium yellow and a purple, I use purple lake but I think thats a W&N exclusive.

/ic/ BTFO once again
I'm still not convinced that it's possible to make a decent living as a concept artist or illustrator. I know there's people that do, as there is people who fail miserably. But let's try to focus on the broad strokes of this 'career'...
is it realistic to expect to live a lower middle class life doing this? I remember reading that Dave Rapoza is rich as fuck. Kind of don't buy it. Whit Brachna owns 2 houses? Kind of don't buy it either. On the outside everyone is super happy and successful and doing amazing, but once you talk to these artists 1on1 they give off the vibe that they really are NOT doing too well, despite working their asses off for clients who make millions with their work. And the artists know this, but can't afford to ask for reasonable rates because compition is just so insane. Then there's people 'quitting' the pursuit of art as a career which to me is incredibly demoralizing... Everyone and their mom are selling tutorials and gumroads and spamming fb with self promotion. It all feels so fake it till you make to me.
Even Mullins seemed to very carefully try to tell people 'better go do something else with your lives guys' in the recent events/interviews.
Then however there was one anon who posted a screenshot of his e-banking where apparently he had a client pay thousands of € for a single gig. That gives me hope...
But still overall my future financial prospects as an aspiring pro artist look REALLY bleak (to me). Please tell me it's not that bad guys...
>I'm still not convinced that it's possible to make a decent living
>I know there's people that do
answered your own question now fuck off.
>is it realistic to expect to live a lower middle class
depends where you live duh

> I remember reading that Dave Rapoza is rich as fuck. Kind of don't buy it. Whit Brachna owns 2 houses? Kind of don't buy it either. On the outside everyone is super happy and successful and doing amazing,
Why would they lie about how much they make just to encourage thousands of aspiring artists to compete for their jobs if they have trouble making a decent living? Are you stupid or something? If things go bad for you, you try to discourage other people from becoming potential competition.
> but once you talk to these artists 1on1 they give off the vibe that they really are NOT doing too well
How many of these artists have you talked to 1 on 1? My guess is, the "vibe" you are getting is just them being annoyed with your stupid as fuck question. "How much money do you make???" is basically on the same level as "what brushes are you using??!!?".
I never went to art school, what did i miss? pic related, my "best" drawing yet
Since no replies, is this "beginner's thread" material or "drawing thread" material?
>>2351964
Depends what your trying to acheive.
That's pretty cool, I like it.
>what did i miss?
Nothing.
