Nelson Shanks was a genius.

If there is one name that deserves to be remembered from the XX century painters is his name.

He will be one of the names in history.

At what point should one make the jump from monochrome into color?
Also, did any of you guys get suckered into buying $200 pencils because
>muh pigments
>muh artist quality
before you were at the level to make it a worthwile investment?

When you have absolute confidence in your ability to correctly copy proportion and value* for any number of lighting setups using the comparative measurement method.

To be frank, I think it's a good idea to fuck around with it in traditional media a little all along the way, just for familiarity's sake. However, this should all be kept separate from your real study/practice, just more for 'fun'.
>>
Whenever you're happy with your forms and values. There isn't a defined spot.
Color is tricky but once you've got a good idea of value it's a lot more intuitive. Do some studies of stuff with good colors to improve your eye for color (namely: recognizing when something you assume is red is actually brown, purple, etc but just looks red in context).
>>

oh and on value, value is a little tricky, as there really isn't any media, other than maaaybe digital on an amoled screen, that can truly replicate the full range of value you can see. So you kinda have to make decisions on what range of value you're going to choose to represent accurately. You'll have to sacrifice either the upper end or lower end usually.

If one were to become a NEET and just focus on art for a year what specific things would they have to study if they were a beginner and wanted to get into CalArts?

Life's not a video game, it's not only about studying. Some nuances take more than a year to grasp, and some elements like creativity you might never get.
>>
>>2356815
This, basically.

Though strong draughtsmanship and the ability to draw from life are important, CalArts seems to be more interested in your potential as an artist. From what I've seen, they're looking to see how you are as a storyteller and an illustrator, and how open you are to experimenting. If you're looking for an animation school that you can easily grind your way into, check out Sheridan.

Sup everybody
I don't have any money nor much spare time or skill, but I designed several characters in anime style and also drafted up a story. Like I said I just can't really work on it right now, but I'll be posting some of this stuff if anyone's interested in taking ownership of it. Its not licensed or anything so if you like anything you see its yours to use. If not I'll just leave the thread alone

The drawings and characters were designed by myself probably at least 10 years ago. Recently I got into One Punch Man and I was sort of inspired by the way that ONE just up and created his own comic despite the sub par quality, and let it turn into this big huge production. Like I said, I wouldn't care about taking credit for any of it if it ever actually became something, but it would be crazy if that ever even happened.

Realistically. How long will it take to get really good at drawing. I mean those highly detailed drawings I see her.

I have no experience with drawing and I have bad handwriting and have trouble even drawing circles and can only draw stick figures. Will I ever have a chance to even draw something simple?

and get to work

want to know how long it takes? a little longer every time you procrastinate instead of making art.
>>
No idea what in particular you mean by "highly detailed drawings" but it will take several years even if you go really hard on it (which normally just makes people quit because they get discouraged and burn out). That said, you can probably do some good detailed studies within a year or so from reference, it'll take longer to do stuff that's completely your own.

My handwriting is shit too, luckily you can draw even with garbage handwriting. Generally you'll be wanting to use your elbow and arm more than fingers and it's really a pretty different thing to writing, though there's an art to good calligraphy too.

I think it's better for your sanity to draw and practice to get better rather than drawing and practicing to "make it." Keep people you admire and places you want to be in mind, but don't sweat your long term goals on a daily basis or you'll probably just feel like shit that you're not at the level of mastery you want to be fast enough. Better to regularly revise short-term goals to focus on that lead you in the right direction, fulfilling many short term goals is a lot more satisfying than having one long-term one a few years off that you obsess over, in my experience.

depends on how smart, disciplined and passionate you are.

drawing is alot like learning a language - similar learning curve.

I've seen so many amazing artists, who by all means could acquire a cintiq, yet they use the Intuous pro?

Why? Why do people seem to find the intuous better than the more expensive cintiq? Should I go buy an intuous as well?

People have their reasons. Some hate having their hand in the way. I on the other hand can adapt to either and really feel that drawing directly on screen is most natural.

I have several devices that lets me draw directly on screen, but I want something larger(minus the cintiq price). I'm looking at getting one of the alternatives, Yiynova 22u v3 specifically.
>>
>>2351297
Cintiqs are expensive as shit and if you don't know what you're doing you can end up damaging them mostly via scratches. They also uncomfortable for artists who are use to the textured give from paper. It's super convenient to just draw what the fuck you want straight to the screen.
Intuous (and tablets in general) are portable and cheap. The texture on them take some getting use to but many artist use to paper like it. It takes some Jedi hand/eye coordination when using a tablet.
I think those are the pros and cons I and other folks have ran into.
>>
>>2351297
size matters most

if can't afford the giant cintiq then get an intuos with a large monitor

The worst thing is I thought Bob Ross was just a meme, turns out he's probably one of the best teachers that ever lived. What's really awful is going back to normal youtube tutorials after watching some Bob Ross videos.

He just loved to teach and paint and it made his videos so easy to watch.

Any advice, resources, and especially references, on dealing with how colours behave under less common types of lighting? Especially dark and coloured lights.
I'm relatively comfortable with bright indoor/outdoor lighting since potential practice is basically everywhere, but I've realised I'm basically a drunk baby when it comes to handling anything else, it's a real blind spot.

I read Gurney's Colour and Light a few years ago and have picked it back up, but anything else you could throw at me would be killer. Especially references.

take this my man
http://www.bluscreens.net/screen-captures-a-z--updates.html

But since of course cameras are nowhere near as sensitive to color and light as the human eye, it surely won't hurt to make some real life lighting set ups yourself, that way you also have full information on involved lightsources and can turn around what you want, change perspective etc.
Do some still lifes that way or maybe just some experimenting and just watching how the light behaves.

>giving advice you don't follow yourself
I...I will

But srsly, just turn off all the light in your room, and do a still life of your hand, being illuminated only by your screen. Obviously implying you work digitally here.

Also, if you ever leave your house (on here it feels like something noteworthy), be observant of light aswell. Everything you see has a lighting set up. duh.

Additionally you might want to invest some time in learning 3d, to also make your own lighting set ups with full control.
Blender is free and if you have time, you can learn all you need for some basic lighting set ups in a day. For that, you basically just need to know how to navigate and how to add a mesh.
